WordPress Setup: Build a Site with Themes, Plugins, and Backups

A practical beginner’s guide to planning and launching a self-hosted WordPress site, from hosting and installation to themes, plugins, backups, and careful optimization.

To build a self-hosted WordPress site, first plan its purpose and structure, then choose hosting that meets WordPress’s current requirements. Install WordPress through your host or manually, configure the essentials, select a theme, add only the plugins you need, and establish backups and updates before optimizing.

1. Plan the site before installing WordPress

Decide what the site will do: publish a blog, provide information about an organization, or combine both. WordPress.org describes all three as possible uses in its getting-started guide.

Before installation, settle three practical choices:

  • Installation location: Will WordPress serve from the domain’s root, such as example.com, or a subdirectory, such as example.com/blog? Choose the location that fits how visitors will use the site.
  • Content structure: Sketch the categories that will organize posts. Use categories for meaningful groups rather than deciding them after publishing a large volume of content.
  • Core pages: Identify the pages visitors will need, such as About and Contact. You can create them after installation.

These choices shape the site’s navigation and content organization; making them early reduces avoidable restructuring.

2. Choose hosting that meets WordPress’s requirements

A self-hosted WordPress site needs a web server, and the hosting environment must meet WordPress’s current technical requirements. Requirements can change, so check the live WordPress hosting guidance rather than relying on a fixed list copied into an older tutorial.

Compare hosts using the needs of a first-time site owner, not a broad claim that one provider is best:

  • Does the service meet WordPress’s current requirements?
  • Can it install or manage WordPress for you, or will you handle installation yourself?
  • What backup and update support is included, and what is your responsibility?
  • Can support staff help with WordPress-specific issues?

Some WordPress-focused providers offer pre-installed WordPress, backups, updates, or developer tools; the exact service depends on the provider. WordPress.org says that a beginner may benefit from a provider experienced in WordPress hosting. Its guidance does not establish a best provider or a current price.

3. Install WordPress and understand the database requirement

How do I install WordPress? Many hosts provide an automatic installation option in their hosting account. Follow the host’s current instructions and confirm the domain and installation location before starting. If you prefer to install it yourself, use WordPress.org’s installation FAQ to reach the manual installation guidance.

Do I need to create a database? WordPress needs access to a database; the official FAQ names MySQL or MariaDB. With an automatic installer, the host may handle database setup as part of the process. For a manual installation, follow the host’s database instructions and WordPress’s installation guide.

How do I find a good host? Check that the hosting environment meets current WordPress requirements, then compare setup help, backup and update arrangements, and WordPress-experienced support. Do not treat any installation-time estimate as guaranteed: the steps and time required vary with the host and your circumstances.

4. Complete the first settings and pages

After installation, sign in to the WordPress administration dashboard and set the site’s identity. WordPress.org’s getting-started guide points to Administration → Settings → General for the site name and related details.

Create the essential informational pages, starting with the pages you identified while planning—for many sites, that includes About and Contact. Add accurate, useful information before promoting the site. Pages are distinct from posts: pages are suited to relatively stable information, while posts are typically used for dated or regularly published content.

5. Choose a theme using a preview

A theme controls the site’s visual presentation. To browse themes from the dashboard, go to Administration → Appearance → Themes. WordPress.org identifies its Theme Directory as the official theme source and says listed themes are reviewed.

Preview a theme with your own site content before activating it. A preview that appears blank or substantially different from what you expect is a reason to investigate how the theme handles your content before making it live. Once activated, check key pages and navigation on the actual site.

6. Add plugins only for functions you need

Plugins add or change site functionality; they are optional, not a checklist every new site must complete. Install one only when you can name the task it will perform and have considered whether WordPress or your theme already provides what you need.

From the dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New to browse and install a plugin, or use the upload option when installing a plugin ZIP file. Before installing or updating, read the plugin’s details and check its compatibility with your WordPress setup. WordPress.org’s plugin management guidance also recommends having a current backup before updating plugins.

7. Set up backups and a deliberate update routine

A backup is useful only if it gives you a way to recover the site. Decide how backups are created and where they are stored, and know how you would restore one before making substantial changes or updates. WordPress.org’s guidance on plugin and theme auto-updates advises making sure rollback is possible.

Keep WordPress, themes, and plugins maintained. You can enable automatic updates for supported plugins and themes, but scheduled updates depend on WordPress Cron tasks. If scheduled updates are not running, WordPress.org recommends using Site Health to help identify errors. For updates you initiate yourself, make sure a current backup is available and check that your site still works afterward.

Coordinate PHP changes with your host

PHP is configured at the server level, so changing it may require your hosting provider rather than a dashboard setting. Before coordinating a PHP change, back up the site, update WordPress and its themes and plugins, and check compatibility. WordPress.org explains this process in its PHP update guidance. Treat a PHP change as planned maintenance, not as an unreviewed toggle.

8. Optimize carefully: maintenance is not a performance guarantee

Keeping WordPress components and server PHP current is sound maintenance. It does not, by itself, establish how fast a particular site will load. Performance depends on the site and its hosting environment, and the available WordPress guidance here does not establish comparative results for caching tools, image optimization, content delivery networks, database cleanup, or Core Web Vitals tactics.

For a new site, start with low-risk discipline: keep the software maintained, avoid installing plugins without a defined purpose, and make a recoverable backup before significant changes. If you later investigate caching, image handling, or other performance changes, assess them against your site’s needs and test the result rather than assuming a tool or combination will improve speed.
