The best WordPress image size is the smallest generated version that is at least as wide as the image’s rendered slot. A 400-pixel content column usually needs a derivative around 400 pixels wide (or the next larger available size), not the full camera original. WordPress keeps the original upload as full and normally creates thumbnail, medium, medium_large and large derivatives. Your theme, blocks, crop settings and responsive layout determine which dimensions are actually appropriate.

What WordPress image sizes mean
When you upload a picture, WordPress stores the original file and creates intermediate images from it. The original is called full; it retains the uploaded pixel dimensions unless another process has resized the source. Intermediate files let the site serve an image closer to the size a visitor’s browser needs.

The names are size presets, not promises that every image will have exactly those dimensions. Maximum-width and maximum-height limits, the source aspect ratio, hard-crop settings and theme-registered sizes all affect the resulting file. A portrait source may produce a medium image that is narrower than 300 pixels because WordPress preserves its proportions.
| WordPress size | Documented default | How it behaves | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
Thumbnail (also registered as thumb) |
150 × 150 pixels | Can be cropped to the exact square dimensions in Media settings | Small grids, archive thumbnails and compact lists |
| Medium | Maximum 300 × 300 pixels | Proportional resize within the maximum bounds | Images inside narrow post content or small cards |
| Medium large | 768 pixels wide, no default height limit | Proportional intermediate size used heavily by responsive delivery | Tablet-width content and a useful srcset candidate |
| Large | Maximum 1024 × 1024 pixels | Proportional resize within the maximum bounds | Large article images and desktop content columns |
| Full | The uploaded image’s original dimensions | No derivative reduction | Situations that genuinely need the source resolution |
The standard editor choices are Thumbnail, Medium, Large and the original Media File (full size). A theme or plugin can register additional names that do not appear in this list unless it also adds them to the media selector.

How to choose the right dimensions
Measure the rendered slot
Start with the widest space in which the image will actually appear, not with the camera or phone’s maximum resolution. If the content column is 400 pixels wide, choose a generated file about 400 pixels wide or the next larger candidate. Supplying a 4,000-pixel original to that slot adds transfer and decoding work without adding visible detail on a normal display.
Account for high-density screens and layouts that expand at larger breakpoints. If a card is 320 CSS pixels wide and the design commonly serves a two-times-density screen, an image around 640 pixels wide is a sensible custom candidate. Do not automatically double every image: the browser can choose among candidates, and a larger file still costs storage and bandwidth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve or deliberately change the aspect ratio
Use proportional resizing when the complete composition must remain visible. A landscape photograph should not become square simply because a list component is square. Use a hard crop only when the design calls for uniform cards, avatars or hero panels and the subject can tolerate the crop.
Thumbnail is the notable built-in exception: it is normally square and may cut away part of the source. Check faces, product edges and text in the crop before publishing. A focal point near an edge is especially likely to disappear.
Plan for responsive candidates
WordPress has native responsive-image support since version 4.4. Its generated markup can include srcset and sizes, allowing the browser to select an appropriate candidate for the current viewport. A useful set might include a small card width, a medium tablet width and a larger desktop width rather than dozens of near-duplicates.
The responsive-images documentation describes a default max_srcset_image_width of 2048 pixels. That limit prevents very large sources from being offered automatically in the responsive list unless your configuration changes it. Responsive markup cannot create a width that was never generated, so the registered sizes and regeneration process still matter.
Balance quality, storage and processing
Every additional registered size can produce another file for every existing and future attachment. A theme with many card, banner and retina variants can increase disk use and make a regeneration run expensive. Keep sizes that correspond to real template slots, remove redundant variants from new registrations, and regenerate deliberately after a change.
Check what your theme and blocks already request
The Media settings screen controls the built-in dimensions used when inserting images into post content. Themes and plugins can register their own sizes, and those may be used by templates even when they are absent from the dashboard.

Change the built-in sizes in the WordPress dashboard
These settings affect dimensions WordPress uses when generating and inserting standard image sizes. They do not rewrite files that already exist, and they do not override every size supplied by a theme or plugin.
- Sign in to the WordPress administration area.
- Open Settings → Media.
- Under Thumbnail size, enter the desired width and height in pixels. Enable the option to crop thumbnails to the exact dimensions when every thumbnail must have the same shape.
- Under Medium size, set maximum width and maximum height. WordPress keeps the source ratio within those limits.
- Under Large size, set maximum width and maximum height, then save the changes.
The labels on the screen describe maximum dimensions for images inserted into post content. They are not a universal instruction that every image on the site should be exported at those values. A template can continue to use a separately registered size.
Choose an appropriate crop policy
Enable exact thumbnail cropping for a uniform square grid only when that visual treatment is intentional. Leave it disabled when the complete image matters more than consistent boxes. Changing the crop option changes how future derivatives are produced; it does not automatically fix earlier thumbnails.
Select a size while inserting an image
In the block editor or classic editor, select an image and open its size control. The normal options are Thumbnail, Medium, Large and Media File (the original). Pick the smallest option that fills the displayed slot without obvious upscaling.
If a 500-pixel column offers only Medium at roughly 300 pixels and Large at up to 1024 pixels, Large is the safer choice; the browser may display it at 500 pixels and preserve detail. If the column is 250 pixels wide, Medium avoids sending unnecessary pixels. Avoid choosing Full merely because it is available.
After publishing, inspect the image element in the browser’s developer tools. Look for srcset and sizes attributes and confirm that the selected candidates include widths near your actual layout. A missing responsive attribute can indicate a custom template, an optimization plugin setting or markup that bypasses the normal WordPress image functions.
Add a custom image size in a theme or plugin
When the built-in presets do not match a real component, register a named size in the active theme or, preferably for site-wide functionality, a plugin:

add_image_size( 'hero-wide', 1600, 900, true ); // hard crop to 16:9
add_image_size( 'card', 640, 360, false ); // proportional resize within bounds
The function signature is add_image_size( $name, $width, $height, $crop ). With $crop set to false, WordPress scales proportionally so neither bound is exceeded. With true, it crops to the requested dimensions. You can provide a crop-position array, such as array( 'left', 'top' ), when the important subject needs to stay in a particular area.

The standard thumbnail function accepts the built-in names, any registered name, or an explicit width-and-height array. Keep the name stable after publication; changing dimensions under the same name requires regeneration and can affect every template that uses it.
Make a custom size available to editors
Registering a size makes it available to template code, but it may not appear in the editor’s size dropdown. Add it through the image_size_names_choose filter:
add_filter( 'image_size_names_choose', function ( $sizes ) {
$sizes['card'] = 'Card';
$sizes['hero-wide'] = 'Hero wide';
return $sizes;
} );
Use labels that describe the component or crop so editors can distinguish a square card from a proportional article image.
Regenerate derivatives after changing dimensions
A size definition is applied when WordPress generates image metadata. Existing uploads do not automatically receive every newly defined or resized derivative. That is why a new setting can appear correct for a fresh upload while older posts still show the previous dimensions.

Regenerate through an administration tool
Install and run a reputable thumbnail-regeneration tool from the WordPress administration area. Regenerate all attachments when a global preset changed, or limit the run to the affected images if the tool supports selection. Large media libraries can require substantial CPU, memory and storage; run the process during a low-traffic period and ensure backups exist.
Regenerate with WP-CLI
On a site with command-line access, the standard command is:
wp media regenerate
WP-CLI asks for confirmation and processes attachment metadata. Test on a staging copy first when a theme change will create many files. Monitor available disk space because old and new derivatives can coexist until cleanup is complete.

How responsive images affect the choice
Since WordPress 4.4, core can add srcset and sizes to image markup. The browser uses those hints, the display width and the device’s pixel density to choose one candidate. This is different from manually embedding the full original in every page: a phone may receive a smaller derivative while a desktop receives a wider one.
Recommended Free Tools
Responsive behavior depends on correctly generated candidates and accurate layout information. If a custom component always declares an image as 1,200 pixels wide even when it is 320 pixels on a phone, the browser may download more data than necessary. Conversely, a candidate set that stops below the desktop slot can force upscaling and softness.
The medium_large size, 768 pixels wide by default, exists largely as an intermediate responsive option. It is not normally one of the four editor choices, but core can include it among candidates. A custom size is worthwhile when your actual breakpoints fall far from the built-in widths.
Common problems and precise fixes
Old images still use the previous dimensions
Changing Settings → Media or editing add_image_size() does not rewrite old files. Regenerate the affected attachments, clear any page or CDN cache, and reload the page with cache-bypass tools before judging the result.
A new custom size is missing
Confirm that the registration code runs on the active theme or plugin, that the name is spelled identically in the template, and that the upload was processed after registration. Regenerate older attachments. If the size is absent only from the editor dropdown, add it through image_size_names_choose.

Check whether the selected derivative is narrower than the rendered slot. Choose the next larger candidate, register a width that covers the slot, and regenerate the attachment. Do not expect WordPress to recover detail that was not present in the original upload.
The crop cuts off a face or product
Replace a hard crop with proportional resizing, change the crop focal position, or create a component-specific crop that gives the subject more room. Review several representative images; one acceptable crop does not prove that the rule works for every composition.
Disk usage increased sharply
Count the sizes registered by the theme and plugins and remove redundant variants from future generation. Keep the sizes used by active templates, then regenerate only where necessary. Do not delete files blindly: a template may still reference a derivative even if it is not visible in the media UI.

Inspect the markup. A custom HTML component, CSS background, or template that bypasses WordPress image functions may not receive responsive attributes. Use an attachment image function with a registered size, provide an accurate sizes value, and verify that intermediate files exist.
Practical dimension examples
| Component | Rendered slot | Reasonable candidate | Crop decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Article body image | About 700 pixels on desktop, narrower on mobile | Large or a custom size around 768–900 pixels | Preserve the original ratio |
| Two-column card | About 320 pixels per card | A 640-pixel custom card for high-density screens | Use a fixed crop only if every card must align |
| Wide hero | Up to 1,600 × 900 pixels | A 1600 × 900 hard-cropped hero size | Deliberate 16:9 crop; check focal points |
| Square avatar grid | 150 pixels | Thumbnail or a larger square custom size | Exact square crop |
These are layout examples, not universal presets. Measure your own CSS slot and account for the breakpoints at which it changes.
A maintenance checklist
- Record the pixel width of each important image slot.
- Choose proportional or hard-cropped output for each component.
- Keep the smallest candidate that covers the slot, plus only useful responsive widths.
- Document custom size names and where each is used.
- After changing a definition, regenerate old attachments.
- Clear page, object and CDN caches before testing.
- Check crops with landscapes, portraits, faces, products and images containing text.
- Inspect
srcsetandsizesat representative viewport widths. - Monitor storage after regeneration and remove unused registrations safely.
WordPress image dimensions are therefore a coordination problem between upload settings, template geometry, crop policy and responsive markup. Set the built-in values for ordinary content, add named sizes for genuine design components, and regenerate existing media whenever those definitions change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is medium_large not shown in the image-size dropdown?
The normal editor menu lists Thumbnail, Medium, Large and Media File. Medium large is a core responsive candidate and can still be used in generated markup even though it is not normally presented as an editor choice.
What happens when the original upload is smaller than a requested custom size?
WordPress cannot add detail that is absent from the source. The generated file may remain smaller than the requested bounds, so upload a larger source when the layout requires a wider image.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I delete old derivative files immediately after changing sizes?
Not safely without checking references. Older posts, cached pages or templates may still point to those files. Confirm that regeneration succeeded and that no active markup uses the old names before removing anything.
Do Media settings control featured images in every theme?
No. The dashboard values govern standard sizes used for post-content insertion. Themes and plugins can register and use independent sizes for featured images, cards and other components.
