Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
A WordPress site is ready to launch only when its production configuration, URLs, security, forms, email, search settings, analytics, backups, and rollback plan have all been tested. A visual review alone cannot catch a blocked sitemap, a form that sends nowhere, a certificate warning, or a backup that cannot be restored. Use the checklist below as a documented go/no-go process, then monitor the site closely after DNS or the launch switch changes.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What “ready to go live” means
Launch is an operational change, not just the moment a new homepage becomes visible. It can alter DNS, HTTPS behavior, canonical URLs, redirects, indexing, email delivery, scheduled jobs, analytics, permissions, caching, and integrations at the same time. Treat the launch as a release with an owner, a time window, a tested rollback, and evidence for each check.

Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall- Ready: the final production host serves the approved content over HTTPS, critical user journeys work, search engines can discover the intended URLs, tracking records the intended events, and a tested backup can be restored.
- Not ready: any critical security or configuration issue remains, the team cannot identify who controls DNS or rollback, a key form or transaction has not been tested in production, or the site still exposes staging controls and URLs.
1. Confirm ownership, access, and the release decision
Write down who owns every account and who can make a change during the cutover. Do this before the launch window, while there is still time to recover access.
- Registrar and DNS account, including the person who can change nameservers or records.
- Hosting, CDN or proxy, server control panel, and billing ownership.
- WordPress administrator accounts, emergency access, and the person responsible for least-privilege permissions.
- Analytics property, Search Console property, email or SMTP provider, CRM, payment processor, and other connected services.
- Backup storage, retention settings, restore credentials, and the escalation contact for the hosting or infrastructure provider.
Name one person who approves the launch and one person who can authorize a rollback. Record the planned cutover time, the DNS or deployment change that will trigger it, the smoke tests that must pass, and the exact condition that stops the release. Keep this record where the whole launch team can see it.

2. Verify production URLs, DNS, and HTTPS
Set the canonical address
Confirm the final hostname and whether the site uses the www or non-www form. In WordPress, check that the Home URL and Site URL both use the intended production address and protocol. Search the database and exported content for staging hostnames before the switch; a single staging URL in an image, canonical tag, feed, structured-data field, or email template can leak the private environment or split signals between hosts.
Test the certificate and redirects
Open the production hostname over HTTPS from a normal browser and an external network. Confirm that the certificate covers every required hostname, that HTTP redirects to HTTPS, and that the chosen www/non-www variant redirects consistently rather than creating chains or loops. Check for mixed-content warnings caused by images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts, or embeds that still load over HTTP. WordPress.org’s Site Health documentation states that “HTTPS improves the security of your website.”
Recommended Free Tools
Remove staging controls
At the planned cutover, remove password protection, maintenance mode, staging banners, test users, debug output, and staging-only integrations. Verify that production is not still configured with a test payment endpoint, sandbox email recipient, development API key, or a robots rule intended only to hide staging.
3. Complete content and editorial QA
Proofread the pages that represent the business and the paths a first-time visitor will take. Search the database and rendered HTML for unfinished headings, sample phone numbers, and temporary links.
- Homepage, primary service or product pages, pricing, contact, about, posts, author profiles, navigation, footer, and legal or policy pages.
- Headings in a logical order, accurate dates and author details, image alt text, captions, downloads, calls to action, and visible contact information.
- Every important internal and external link, including navigation menus, footer links, buttons, PDFs, social links, and in-content references.
- Images at the intended dimensions, with no missing thumbnails, distorted crops, or accidental low-resolution placeholders.
Use an incognito window or a logged-out browser for this review. An administrator may see cached or permission-dependent content that ordinary visitors cannot.

4. Exercise forms, email, and transactions in production
Submit every user-facing workflow using the final host and final integrations. A form that appears to succeed in the browser can still fail at delivery, CRM hand-off, or notification.
- Submit contact, newsletter, login, registration, search, booking, payment, and checkout forms with valid data.
- Repeat key forms with missing, malformed, or disallowed values to verify validation, useful error messages, and safe handling of failed submissions.
- Confirm the success page or message, autoresponder, confirmation email, internal notification recipient, CRM or help-desk record, and any downstream webhook.
- Test spam controls without blocking a legitimate submission. Confirm that consent language and opt-in records are stored as intended.
- Where your mail provider supports it, verify SPF, DKIM, and DMARC alignment and inspect both the sender address and reply-to behavior.
- For payments, test the approved live transaction path or the provider’s documented production test method, then verify order creation, confirmation, fulfillment or notification, and refund handling.
Label internal test submissions clearly and remove or exclude them from production reports so they do not distort conversion data.
5. Create and prove the backup and rollback path
Take a complete database and file backup immediately before cutover. WordPress update documentation advises, “Before you get started, it’s a good idea to back up your website.” For a launch, the backup is useful only if the team knows where it is and can recover it.
- Record the backup timestamp, storage location, retention period, owner, and the credentials required to retrieve it.
- Keep a copy outside the production host when the backup service supports it; a host outage or corrupted filesystem should not destroy the only copy.
- Write the restore sequence, including how to restore the database, files, configuration, DNS, and any uploaded media.
- Perform a restore drill in a separate environment, or otherwise verify that the archive can be opened and recovered. Check that the restored site loads, logs in, serves media, and connects to required integrations.
Define rollback before launch: who makes the decision, which DNS or deployment change reverses the release, what content changes must be frozen, and how the team will communicate the incident. A backup without a known restore route is not a reliable rollback plan.

6. Review WordPress core, themes, plugins, and security
Stabilize versions
Update WordPress core, the active theme, and plugins in staging first. Test the updated set there, then deploy the same compatible versions to production. Do not introduce untested updates during the DNS cutover unless they are required to fix a documented launch blocker.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remove unnecessary access and code
- Delete unused themes, inactive plugins, sample content, temporary administrator accounts, and test API keys.
- Review each user’s role and reduce access to the minimum required. Use strong unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available.
- Check file permissions, firewall or CDN rules, security headers, login protection, and malware monitoring.
- Disable debug output and ensure PHP or application errors are logged privately rather than displayed to visitors.
Use Site Health as a release gate
Open Tools > Site Health > Status and resolve critical issues before launch. Site Health reports configuration, security, update, and performance concerns, including whether the site uses HTTPS. WordPress describes critical issues as potential security vulnerabilities or serious performance problems; document any remaining recommended improvements and assign an owner.
7. Test performance and real browsers or devices
Test representative pages while logged out, using the final hosting, CDN, and caching configuration. Include the homepage, a high-traffic landing page, a long article, a form page, a search-results page, and a checkout or account path when applicable.
- Check server response time, page rendering, cache headers, redirect count, and whether personalized pages are accidentally cached for another user.
- Confirm that images have sensible dimensions and compression, fonts load without blocking the page, and JavaScript produces no console errors.
- Test current desktop and mobile browsers, narrow viewports, touch interactions, menus, search, video or audio, downloads, and checkout controls.
- Review Core Web Vitals or equivalent performance metrics if you have measured them. Do not publish a speed score that was not actually measured on the production configuration.
Purge old caches only after the new release is available, then repeat the smoke test. A stale cache can make a fixed page appear broken, while an empty cache can expose slow first-load behavior that was hidden during development.

8. Check accessibility on the journeys that matter
Automated scanners are useful for finding patterns, but they do not replace a manual pass through the key journeys. Use the keyboard from the address bar through navigation, search, forms, errors, dialogs, and checkout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Every interactive control has a visible focus state and a logical tab order.
- Headings follow a meaningful hierarchy, labels describe their fields, and error messages identify how to fix the problem.
- Text and controls have sufficient color contrast; information is not conveyed by color alone.
- Informative images have useful alt text, decorative images are treated as decorative, and videos or audio have captions or transcripts where needed.
- Link text makes sense out of context, zoom remains usable, and layouts work at narrow widths without hidden or overlapping controls.
- Screen-reader output exposes names, states, instructions, and success or failure messages for the main tasks.
9. Protect SEO, indexing, and analytics continuity
Search and metadata
Give important pages unique titles and meta descriptions. Confirm the preferred URL in each canonical tag, the open-graph and sharing fields, structured data, robots.txt, and the XML sitemap. Remove staging noindex directives and password gates from production. Open the sitemap and representative URLs as an unauthenticated visitor to ensure they are reachable and allowed to crawl.
Search Console and analytics
Use the production domain or property in Google Search Console and analytics rather than a staging property. Test a page view, a key event, consent behavior, and each conversion event with a controlled submission. Verify that the tracking code fires once, records the correct hostname and page path, and does not count internal test traffic as a sale or lead.
Submit or resubmit the production XML sitemap when the platform requires it, then watch coverage and indexing reports after launch. A successful browser load does not prove that a crawler can access the page.
Best Value
10. Map migrations and redirects before changing URLs
If the domain, permalink structure, or individual paths change, export the old URL inventory. Include pages that receive traffic, backlinks, email links, bookmarks, media files, feeds, and campaign visits. Map every old URL to the closest relevant live destination and implement one-hop 301 redirects.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Test the old domain, HTTP and HTTPS variants, and both www and non-www forms where they exist.
- Check query strings used by campaigns or external integrations and preserve them when the destination needs them.
- Inspect canonical tags, internal links, navigation, feeds, downloadable files, and XML sitemap entries for old paths.
- Confirm that redirects do not point all pages to the homepage, create loops, or chain through multiple intermediate URLs.
For an unchanged-domain redesign, redirects may be minimal, but compare the old and new versions for content parity, metadata, canonical URLs, internal links, forms, tracking, and indexation. A same-domain change can still remove a high-value page or accidentally reintroduce a noindex rule.
11. Follow a controlled launch sequence
- Freeze content, configuration, and code at the agreed time. Record the final commit or release identifier.
- Take the final full backup and confirm its location and restore instructions.
- Record current DNS records, redirect rules, cache settings, and the production administrator contact.
- Switch DNS, the deployment control, or the launch flag according to the approved runbook. Change only the records required for this release.
- Purge relevant caches after the new origin is serving the release.
- From an external network, run a smoke test: homepage, highest-value landing pages, login, forms, checkout, confirmation email, HTTPS, HTTP-to-HTTPS redirects, robots.txt, XML sitemap, analytics, and error logs.
- Publish the go/no-go result and keep the rollback owner available for the rest of the launch window.
Do not declare success because the homepage loads. The release is successful when the critical journeys, discovery controls, data collection, and recovery path all pass on the live configuration.
12. Monitor the first hours and weeks
Keep the launch record open after the switch. Review it on a schedule rather than waiting for a customer report.
- Uptime, TLS certificate validity and expiry, HTTP status codes, server and PHP errors, and redirect loops.
- Contact, newsletter, booking, login, payment, and checkout submissions, including notification and autoresponder delivery.
- Analytics page views, consent signals, key events, and conversion counts compared with the expected baseline.
- Search Console coverage, crawl errors, indexation, canonical selection, sitemap processing, and unexpected noindex or blocked URLs.
- Scheduled tasks, cache behavior, queue processing, integration webhooks, security alerts, and backup completion.
- High-value pages opened from real desktop and mobile devices, especially after cache purges or configuration changes.
Keep the staging copy private and update the launch record with each observed issue, its impact, the owner, and the fix. If a critical journey fails, stop making unrelated changes, preserve logs and the current backup, and use the preapproved rollback decision rather than improvising.
How the checklist changes by launch scenario
| Scenario | Primary risk | Emphasis before launch | After-launch burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| New site on a new production setup | Incorrect production configuration or poor discovery | Canonical hostname, HTTPS, permissions, forms, analytics, sitemap, robots.txt, and backup restoration | Confirm indexing, uptime, integrations, and scheduled jobs |
| Redesign on the same domain and paths | Regression or loss of existing content and tracking | Content and metadata parity, internal links, canonicals, forms, analytics events, responsive behavior, and indexation | Compare key pages and conversions with the previous release |
| Migration with changed domain or URLs | Lost search equity, broken links, and confused users | Complete URL inventory, one-hop 301 map, canonical review, DNS and email impact, sitemap, and redirect testing | Watch coverage, redirects, traffic, forms, email, and external links closely |
Go/no-go decision
Approve the launch only when the designated owner can answer yes to all of these questions: Is production access controlled and documented? Does the final hostname serve valid HTTPS without mixed content? Are content, links, forms, email, transactions, analytics, and accessibility journeys tested? Are staging controls and URLs gone? Does Site Health have no unresolved critical issue? Is the final backup recoverable? If URLs changed, is every important old URL mapped and tested? Can the team identify the person and action that will roll the release back?
If any answer is no, keep the site in staging or maintenance mode, assign the missing check, and set a new decision time. A delayed launch is easier to manage than a public site that cannot receive leads, be crawled, or be restored.
