Published figures range from Upwork marketplace listings of $15–$40+ per hour to a 2026 regional benchmark median of $105 per hour for US freelancers. Neither is a universal rate: one describes a marketplace, while the other is a modeled regional comparison. For a useful budget, compare like-for-like quotes and clarify what the work includes.
How much does a WordPress developer cost in 2026?
It depends on whether you mean an hourly rate, a project fee, or the cost of an employee or agency. The sources below measure different things, so their figures should be treated as separate benchmarks—not averaged into one supposed market rate. All rates and project totals in this article are in US dollars.

Marketplace listings
Upwork says WordPress developers on its marketplace charge $15–$40+ an hour. It also notes that fixed-price work is common and that project requirements and customization affect the quote. This is a marketplace reference, not a measure of all developers or completed projects. See Upwork’s WordPress developer rate guide.
Regional freelancer and agency medians
Project Cost Estimator’s 2026 Rate Database, dated 2026-07-16, reports blended mid-level hourly medians across six regions. Its figures combine public benchmarks and project quotes; the publisher says they are not tracked invoices or a survey of its own clients, and they do not separate rates by junior, mid-level and senior experience.
#1 Best Overall
| Region | Freelancer median | Agency median |
|---|---|---|
| South / Southeast Asia | $25/hour | $49/hour |
| Eastern Europe | $42/hour | $82/hour |
| Western Europe | $82/hour | $140/hour |
| United Kingdom | $90/hour | $165/hour |
| Australia | $90/hour | $165/hour |
| United States | $105/hour | $185/hour |
The same database gives a US freelancer range of $65–$175 per hour and a US agency range of $120–$290. For South and Southeast Asia, its ranges are $12–$47 for freelancers and $28–$85 for agencies. These are the database’s low–high ranges, not guarantees for a particular developer or project. View the 2026 rate database and methodology.
US rates by engagement and experience
Second Talent’s US hiring-cost model, verified 2026-09-23, separates engagement type and experience. These are modeled hourly costs based on its stated assumptions, not a census of completed transactions.
Rank #2
| Engagement | Junior | Mid-level | Senior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelance or contract | $49–$77/hour | $62–$100/hour | $80–$127/hour |
| In-house employee cost | $55–$85/hour | $70–$110/hour | $90–$140/hour |
| Agency or development shop | $95–$160/hour | $120–$205/hour | $155–$260/hour |
Employee cost and agency pricing are not the same as an individual developer’s take-home pay. An agency quote may include a team and project-management structure; employee-cost models use employment assumptions. Read Second Talent’s hiring-cost model.

What can a whole WordPress project cost?
Second Talent estimates these US project budgets using its mid-level rate assumptions. The totals are planning estimates, not quotes; the hours and scope matter as much as the headline price.
Rank #3
| Project type | Estimated hours | Estimated project cost |
|---|---|---|
| Template or brochure build | 150–250 | $9,000–$25,000 |
| Custom theme with integrations | 400–600 | $25,000–$60,000 |
| Commerce or multisite | 900–1,500 | $56,000–$150,000+ |
A relatively simple project using an existing theme is not directly comparable to a custom build involving integrations, commerce or multisite. Before comparing these estimates with a quote, check whether design, content entry, migration, testing, revisions and launch support are included.
Why published rates differ
- They describe different populations. Upwork reports rates on its marketplace; Project Cost Estimator provides a blended regional benchmark; Second Talent models hiring costs; and The Admin Bar surveyed agency owners and freelancers about their businesses.
- Location and working arrangements matter. A regional median is not transferable to another country, and hourly overlap, communication and coordination can affect the fit of an engagement.
- Provider type changes what the price covers. An individual freelancer’s rate, an employee-cost estimate and an agency rate are not equivalent measures.
- Scope and experience change the workload. Configuring an existing theme differs from building a custom theme or handling plugins, integrations, ecommerce, migration or multisite. Upwork also lists experience, reputation, rush timing and out-of-scope work as cost factors.
- Billing structure affects the comparison. An hourly estimate depends on hours and change requests; a fixed fee depends on a clear definition of deliverables and included revisions.
There is no representative global census of completed 2026 WordPress invoices in these sources. Treat each figure according to its method rather than using it as a definitive average. Upwork’s cost guide describes common work such as research, wireframing, theme customization, plugins, analytics or SEO support, testing, review and launch—all of which can change the amount of work.

What the agency survey says—and what it does not
The Admin Bar’s State of the WordPress Agency 2026 survey gathered responses from 622 agency owners and freelancers across 51 countries in March 2026. For its project-pricing question, the sample was 616 respondents. In the $5,000–$9,999 project-price band, 56.8% reported being consistently profitable; in the $2,500–$4,999 band, 36.8% did.
That is a relationship between reported project-price bands and respondent profitability. It is not a recommendation for what buyers should pay, nor a measure of what all clients paid. Read The Admin Bar’s 2026 survey.

How to compare WordPress developer quotes
Ask each provider to price the same written scope. A quote is easier to assess when it specifies:
- Who will do the work: freelancer, contractor, employee or agency team; relevant WordPress experience; and working-hour overlap.
- What will be delivered: existing-theme setup or custom design and theme, plugins, integrations, ecommerce or multisite, content entry, copy, SEO setup and analytics.
- What is included in the process: migration, testing, revisions, launch, documentation and post-launch support.
- How billing works: fixed fee or hourly rate, estimated hours where applicable, payment milestones, included revision rounds and the rate or approval process for out-of-scope changes.
- When the work will be completed, whether rush timing costs more, and what maintenance, warranty or support—if any—is part of the agreement.
For fixed-price contracts, Upwork notes that revision rounds are typically specified in the agreement and extra work outside the agreed scope can increase the cost. Get the scope and change-control terms in writing before choosing the lowest total.
