Choose WordPress.com if you want managed hosting, automatic maintenance and one support channel. Choose self-hosted WordPress.org if you need maximum control over hosting, server settings, themes and plugins and are willing to operate the site yourself. Both use the same WordPress software; the practical difference is who runs the hosting environment and handles the associated work.
What WordPress.com and WordPress.org actually are
WordPress.com is a hosted service. You create a site inside its platform, and the service supplies the hosting environment, security controls, SSL, performance features, updates and support that come with your plan. WordPress.org distributes the WordPress software at no license cost. You install that software on a hosting account you select, register a domain separately and operate the resulting site yourself or pay another company to do it.

The official WordPress.com explanation is concise: “WordPress.com and WordPress.org both run on the same WordPress software—the main difference is hosting.” See the WordPress.com comparison guide and WordPress.org documentation for the platform definitions.

Quick comparison
| Decision factor | WordPress.com | Self-hosted WordPress.org |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Included and managed by WordPress.com. | Purchased and configured separately with a hosting provider. |
| Technical workload | Lower: the service handles much of the server and maintenance work. | Higher: you handle configuration, maintenance and troubleshooting, or hire help. |
| Software license | Included in the service plan. | The WordPress software is free; hosting and a domain still cost money. |
| Plugins and themes | Plugin installation is advertised on paid plans; exact limits and advanced capabilities depend on the plan. | You choose compatible plugins and themes without a platform-plan gate, subject to your host and server. |
| Security and updates | Managed protections, SSL and automatic updates are part of the hosted offering, with details varying by plan. | You arrange updates, backups, hardening, malware monitoring and SSL, either directly or through your host. |
| Infrastructure control | Centralized hosting and the features available on your plan. | Choice of host, server configuration, data location and operational tooling. |
| Support | Support is provided through the service; paid plans advertise free support. | Support depends on your hosting company, contractors and your own expertise. |
| Portability | You can export content, but the hosting environment and plan features remain centralized. | You can move the WordPress files and database between compatible hosts, provided you manage the migration. |
Who should choose WordPress.com
Beginners who want publishing, not server administration
If your priority is writing, selling, showcasing work or launching a small company site, managed hosting removes the first layer of decisions: server software, PHP settings, database setup, TLS certificates, routine patching and monitoring. You still configure the site itself, but the hosting foundation is supplied.

Creators and small teams that value one vendor
A single account for hosting, site tools and support can be easier to administer than coordinating a registrar, hosting company, security service and developer. This is particularly useful when nobody on the team is responsible for infrastructure.
Owners who prefer predictable operations
WordPress.com says its hosting includes security protection, SSL certificates, storage, enhanced performance, 24/7 support and automatic updates. The exact allocation and feature set depend on the selected plan, so confirm the plan-specific details before purchase at WordPress.com’s hosting guidance.
Users who need plugins but do not want self-hosting
The old claim that WordPress.com cannot use plugins is no longer accurate. Current paid plans advertise plugin installation. However, plugin availability, storage, staging and other advanced capabilities vary by plan; check the current plan-features documentation rather than assuming every plan has the same access.
Who should choose self-hosted WordPress.org
People who need infrastructure control
Self-hosting lets you select the hosting company, server location, resource limits, caching stack, database configuration and deployment process. That control matters when a compliance requirement, unusual integration or high-traffic architecture cannot fit a standardized hosted plan.
Developers, agencies and technical site owners
You can install any compatible theme or plugin, edit code, run custom jobs and choose your own backup and monitoring systems. Agencies can also standardize their own deployment process across clients instead of adopting a host’s workflow.
Owners who accept operational responsibility
The free software does not make a production site maintenance-free. You or a hired provider must select hosting, register and renew the domain, configure DNS, install WordPress, manage SSL, apply core/theme/plugin updates, protect administrator accounts, create tested backups, monitor uptime and resolve conflicts or compromises. The WordPress.org documentation describes this route as free software with hosting selected separately.

If you want managed infrastructure for a WordPress.org site, Antihost managed WordPress hosting keeps each site in an isolated environment and includes one-click staging, free migration, automated and manual backups, free SSL and WooCommerce support.
Hosting responsibility is the decisive difference
On WordPress.com, the platform owns and operates the hosting environment. You choose among its plans and work within the capabilities exposed by that plan. On self-hosted WordPress.org, WordPress is only the application layer. Your host supplies the machine or cloud environment, and you are responsible for making the application reliable on it.
This distinction affects every incident. A hosted customer normally opens a support request when a platform-level problem appears. A self-hosted owner must first identify whether the fault is DNS, the web server, PHP, the database, a plugin, a theme, a security rule or an external service, then contact the correct party or fix it.
Control, portability and customization
What self-hosting gives you
- Freedom to change hosting providers without changing the WordPress software project.
- Access to server-level settings, scheduled tasks, logs, databases and deployment tools, subject to the host’s policies.
- Choice of compatible themes, plugins and custom code without a WordPress.com plan deciding whether installation is available.
- Ability to design a custom backup, staging and disaster-recovery process.
What WordPress.com standardizes
WordPress.com centralizes hosting and plan features so that you do not have to assemble the infrastructure. That reduces configuration choices and the number of vendors to manage, but it also means your server stack, support boundaries and advanced capabilities follow the plan’s rules.
Portability requires planning on either route
Content can be exported, but a site is more than its posts. Before moving, inventory the database, media library, theme customizations, plugin settings, redirects, email records, DNS, analytics and any paid features. A move from WordPress.com to a self-hosted installation may require recreating features that were supplied by the hosted platform. A move in the other direction requires checking whether each plugin, theme and customization is supported by the destination plan.

WordPress.com paid plans now include plugin installation according to the current pricing information. That does not mean every plan has identical storage, performance, staging or extension capabilities. Treat “plugin installation” as a plan feature, not a blanket promise that every plugin will run or that platform support will troubleshoot third-party code.
In both environments, minimize extensions you do not need. Keep a recovery path before changing a theme or installing a major plugin, and remove abandoned components rather than leaving inactive code on the site.
Security, updates, backups and support
Managed route
WordPress.com advertises malware protection, SSL, automatic updates, performance features and support within its hosted plans. Paid plans also advertise ad-free browsing for visitors and global CDN hosting. Read the plan terms for the exact scope, storage and support channel, and do not treat managed security as a substitute for strong passwords, least-privilege accounts and safe editorial practices.

You decide how protection is implemented. At minimum, establish these controls before launch:
- Automatic or promptly applied WordPress core, theme and plugin updates, with a rollback method.
- Off-site, versioned backups of both the database and uploaded files; periodically restore one to verify it works.
- HTTPS with a valid certificate, secure administrator accounts and multifactor authentication where available.
- Malware scanning, firewall or rate-limiting controls, and monitoring for unexpected administrator or file changes.
- Documented recovery contacts, renewal dates and DNS access so someone else can restore the site if the owner is unavailable.
A hosting company may offer some of these services, but “managed WordPress hosting” is not a universal specification. Compare what is included, how often backups run, how long they are retained, whether restores cost extra and who responds to an incident.
2026 cost structure
| Cost item | WordPress.com | Self-hosted WordPress.org |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress software | Included in the service. | No software license fee. |
| Hosting | Included in the selected WordPress.com plan. | Paid separately; provider prices and renewal rates vary. |
| Domain | Paid plans advertise a free domain for the first year; renewal terms and eligibility must be checked at checkout. | Registered separately; price and renewal depend on the registrar and extension. |
| Extensions and services | Some capabilities are plan features; optional premium services may add cost. | Premium themes, plugins, backups, security, email and developer labor are separate decisions. |
| Labor | Lower routine operations burden, although you may still hire design or development help. | Owner time or a contractor is needed for setup, maintenance and incident response. |
The current WordPress.com pricing page advertises paid plans from $2.75 per month when billed every three years. It says paid plans include plugin installation, a free domain for the first year, ad-free browsing, malware protection, free support and global CDN hosting. That is an introductory billing term, not a universal monthly or renewal price. Confirm the checkout total, billing interval, taxes, currency and renewal price at the current pricing page.

There is no single honest total for self-hosted WordPress.org. Hosting, domain renewal, backup retention, security tooling, premium extensions and labor differ materially by provider and site. Compare those line items instead of assuming that “free software” means a free website or that a hosted plan is always cheaper.
Recommended Free Tools
Requirements before you decide
Choose WordPress.com when most of these are true
- You want to publish quickly without configuring a server.
- No team member owns patching, backups and security response.
- You prefer one support channel and a plan-based bill.
- Your required plugins and integrations are available on the plan you can afford.
- You accept platform-specific limits in exchange for reduced maintenance.
Choose self-hosted WordPress.org when most of these are true
- You need a particular host, region, server stack or deployment workflow.
- You require custom code, unusual integrations or unrestricted extension choice.
- You can maintain backups, updates, security and performance—or have a provider do it under a clear agreement.
- You want to move between hosts independently of a hosted service’s plan structure.
- You are prepared to troubleshoot application and infrastructure failures.
How to start with WordPress.com
- Define the site’s requirements. List the domain, content types, commerce or membership needs, integrations and any plugins you consider essential.
- Check plan eligibility. Use the current plan-features documentation to confirm plugin installation, storage, staging, support and performance capabilities for the plan you are considering.
- Create the site and select a domain. If you use the advertised first-year domain benefit, record the renewal price and renewal date.
- Configure identity and access. Turn on strong authentication, add only necessary administrators and separate editorial roles from site administration.
- Choose a theme and add extensions. Install only the plugins you need, verify compatibility and remove unused components.
- Set up content, navigation and legal pages. Test forms, media, redirects, contact addresses and mobile layouts before publishing.
- Review performance and security settings. Confirm HTTPS, visibility settings, backups or restore options supplied by the plan, and the support route for incidents.
- Record billing and ownership details. Save the account owner, domain registrar information, renewal dates and an export plan so the site is not dependent on one person’s inbox.
How to start with self-hosted WordPress.org
- Specify the workload. Estimate traffic, storage, email needs, database size, geographic audience, uptime expectations and compliance requirements.
- Compare hosting offers. Check renewal price, storage, CPU or memory limits, backups and retention, SSL, malware response, support hours, migration tools, staging and resource overage rules. The WordPress.org software itself does not select a provider for you.
- Register the domain and configure DNS. Keep registrar access separate from hosting access and document the nameservers or DNS records.
- Provision the site. Use the host’s installer or create the database, web server, PHP configuration and WordPress files according to its documented procedure.
- Secure the installation before launch. Enable HTTPS, remove default accounts, use unique administrator credentials, restrict file permissions and set a reliable update process.
- Install a lightweight theme and required plugins. Check developer support, update history and compatibility; keep a tested backup before major changes.
- Implement backups and recovery. Store database and files off the server, retain multiple restore points and perform a trial restoration on a separate environment.
- Test production behavior. Verify forms, cron jobs, caching, image handling, redirects, transactional email, analytics and error logs from an unauthenticated browser.
- Monitor after launch. Track uptime, disk space, response time, failed logins, update status, certificate expiry and domain renewal.
Performance and scaling considerations
WordPress.com’s managed environment can simplify baseline performance because hosting, CDN delivery and platform-level optimization are bundled according to the plan. You give up some low-level tuning in return for fewer infrastructure decisions.
With self-hosting, performance is an engineering task. Your results depend on server resources, database configuration, page and object caching, image sizes, CDN design, plugin behavior, query efficiency and traffic spikes. The ability to tune those layers is valuable for a technical team, but every extra layer becomes something you must monitor and maintain.
Before selecting either route, identify the failure that would hurt you most. If a traffic spike or a misconfigured cache is outside your team’s skills, managed hosting may reduce risk. If a platform limit would block a known integration or data workflow, self-hosting may be the safer long-term choice.
Moving between WordPress.com and WordPress.org
Moving to self-hosted WordPress.org
Export posts, pages, comments and media where supported; provision the destination; import the content; recreate the theme and plugin configuration; then test URLs, redirects, forms, metadata, images and search visibility. Keep the old site available during DNS propagation and schedule the final content freeze so late edits are not lost.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Moving to WordPress.com
Audit the self-hosted site first. List every plugin, theme customization, scheduled task, external API and server rule. Confirm that the destination plan supports the functions you need, export the content and media, rebuild unsupported behavior with available tools, and test the site before changing the domain’s DNS.
Best Value
Protect the transition
- Lower DNS TTL ahead of a planned cutover where appropriate.
- Keep a complete database and file backup outside both environments.
- Record redirects and important URL mappings.
- Test administrator access, transactional email and forms after the switch.
- Do not cancel the old hosting or plan until the new site and backups are verified.
Common misconceptions and costly mistakes
“WordPress.org is free, so the site costs nothing.”
The software has no license charge, but a live site still needs hosting and a domain, plus any premium services and labor.
“WordPress.com cannot run plugins.”
Paid plans currently advertise plugin installation. The correct question is which plan supports the plugin and its required capabilities.
“Managed hosting means I do not need backups.”
Understand the provider’s backup scope, retention and restore process. Keep an export or independent copy for critical content and account recovery.
“The cheapest advertised price is the long-term cost.”
WordPress.com’s $2.75-per-month figure is tied to three-year billing. Self-hosted offers may also use introductory rates. Compare renewal pricing, taxes, domains, storage, backups and labor on the same time horizon.
“More control is always better.”
Control has an operating cost. If nobody will apply updates, test restores or respond to a compromise, theoretical flexibility can produce practical downtime.
A practical decision framework
- List non-negotiables. Identify required plugins, integrations, data location, traffic expectations, support hours and compliance constraints.
- Assign operational ownership. Name the person or vendor responsible for updates, backups, security alerts, DNS and emergency recovery.
- Price the complete service. Include hosting, domain renewal, extensions, backups, security and labor—not just the headline plan or software price.
- Test the riskiest requirement. Confirm that a critical plugin, custom integration or performance target works on the exact WordPress.com plan or self-hosted stack before committing.
- Choose the route that matches your capacity. Select WordPress.com when managed convenience lowers your risk; select self-hosted WordPress.org when control and portability justify the work.
Bottom line
For a beginner, creator, small business or team that wants to publish without running infrastructure, WordPress.com is usually the better 2026 starting point. For a developer, agency or organization that needs unrestricted customization, host independence and server-level control, self-hosted WordPress.org is the stronger fit. Neither route wins universally: the right choice is the one whose technical responsibilities, plan limits and full cost your team can reliably sustain.
