WordPress Accessibility: How to Make Your Site Accessible

A practical WordPress accessibility guide covering themes, content, keyboard operation, plugins, testing, WCAG 2.2 AA, and ongoing maintenance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make accessibility a requirement for the entire WordPress site, not a final plugin setting. Start with an accessibility-ready theme, then check the templates, blocks, plugins, media, forms, and written content you actually publish. Use semantic HTML, logical headings and landmarks, useful alternative text, adequate contrast, resizable text, visible keyboard focus, and controls that work without a mouse.

Validate the result with automated checks, keyboard-only navigation, and assistive technology. Repeat those checks after theme, plugin, template, and content changes. An accessibility-ready label is a helpful baseline review; it is not a whole-site WCAG certification, and no plugin or overlay can repair every problem introduced by your content and extensions.

What WordPress accessibility covers

Accessibility means that people with different physical, sensory, cognitive, and technological needs can perceive, understand, navigate, and operate your site. In WordPress, that includes more than the editor or administrator dashboard. Visitors experience the rendered theme, block markup, menus, forms, media players, pop-ups, shopping or membership flows, and every piece of content you add.

A useful working target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA. The WordPress project says that WordPress.org websites and official plugins are expected to conform to WCAG 2.2 AA, where possible. WCAG is the normative technical standard; WordPress documentation explains how the project applies it. Meeting a target requires examining the complete implementation, including code supplied by third parties.

Accessibility also has a human and legal purpose. The U.S. Department of Justice explains that inaccessible web content can deny people with disabilities equal access to information, goods, services, and privileges offered online. Its web guidance, dated March 18, 2022, points readers to WCAG and Section 508 as technical references. Legal duties depend on the organization, service, and jurisdiction, so a theme label or widget should never be presented as an “ADA-compliant” guarantee.

What the accessibility-ready label does—and does not—mean

WordPress’s accessibility-ready designation is a review of a theme against the project’s baseline requirements. The WordPress Accessibility Team explicitly cautions that “accessibility-ready does not mean that the theme meets WCAG guidelines at level AA.” The label can narrow the number of defects you inherit, but it cannot account for your page builder, plugins, custom CSS, content choices, or later updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal accessibility requirement for every plugin in the WordPress directory. A plugin can generate unlabeled controls, broken heading structures, focus traps, inaccessible dialogs, or markup that conflicts with your theme. Treat each extension as code you must inspect rather than as an implied accessibility endorsement.

The WordPress accessibility-guidelines page was updated October 13, 2026. Guidance and dependencies evolve, so record the versions you deploy and revisit your checks when WordPress, a theme, a plugin, or a browser and assistive-technology combination changes.

Plan accessibility before building

The Theme Handbook recommends considering accessibility from the start of a project as part of the project specification. Planning early is less expensive than retrofitting every template after launch and gives contributors a clear definition of done.

Write an accessibility specification

State that new templates, blocks, forms, media, and content must be usable from a keyboard, understandable with a screen reader, readable when text is enlarged, and operable on narrow screens. Name WCAG 2.2 AA as the technical target, while making clear that a target is not a legal certification.

List the page types and journeys that must work: the home page, navigation, search, a representative article, an image-heavy page, a form, a dialog or menu, and any purchase, login, booking, or account flow your site provides. Assign an owner for each area and define how a defect will be recorded and retested.

Inventory what visitors actually receive

  • Record active themes, child themes, page builders, blocks, plugins, embedded services, and custom scripts.
  • Identify templates that output global navigation, headers, footers, sidebars, dialogs, carousels, and forms.
  • Note content patterns such as galleries, video, downloadable documents, tables, and color-coded status messages.
  • Choose representative URLs for testing rather than scanning only the front page.

Choose a theme, then inspect the deployed theme

Prefer a theme carrying the accessibility-ready designation, but test the exact version and configuration you intend to publish. A theme can pass a baseline review and still fail after a child theme, custom CSS, a page builder, or a plugin changes its output.

Area What to verify in the real site
Keyboard and focus Tab reaches every link, button, menu, dialog, carousel control, and form field in a logical order; focus is visible and never becomes trapped.
Structure Headings follow a meaningful hierarchy, landmarks identify major regions, and skip links move users past repeated navigation.
Menus and dialogs Controls have names, open and close states are announced, Escape behaves predictably, and focus returns to the triggering control when a dialog closes.
Forms Every field has a programmatic label, instructions and errors are associated with the right control, and errors do not rely on color alone.
Visual presentation Text and meaningful non-text controls have sufficient contrast; focus indicators remain visible; zoom, text resizing, spacing, and reflow do not hide content.
Responsive behavior At narrow widths, content is not clipped or forced into horizontal scrolling for ordinary reading and operation.
Compatibility The theme remains usable with your page builder, plugins, browser combinations, and assistive technology, not just in an isolated demo.
Maintenance evidence Update history, issue handling, and the distinction between a baseline review and a documented WCAG evaluation are clear.

Test navigation before approving the theme: use only the keyboard to move from the browser chrome into the page, locate the skip link, open and close menus, submit a form, and operate any carousel or modal. Inspect heading order and landmarks with a browser accessibility tree or screen reader. Resize text and zoom the page, then repeat the same journeys at mobile widths.

Publish content people can perceive and understand

Use headings and links as navigation

Give each page one clear main topic and organize sections in a logical hierarchy. Do not choose a heading level merely because its visual size looks attractive; adjust styling in CSS while preserving the structural level. A link should describe its destination or action. Replace a list of “click here” links with labels that still make sense when read out of context.

Write useful alternative text

For an informative image, describe the information the image contributes, not every decorative detail. If the image is a chart, identify the conclusion a reader needs and provide the underlying data or explanation in nearby text when necessary. An image used only as decoration should have empty alternative text so a screen reader can skip it. Do not repeat a caption or surrounding sentence in the alternative text.

Caption and transcribe media

Provide captions for prerecorded video when applicable, and offer a transcript or equivalent text for audio and video so people who cannot hear or see the recording can access its information. Check that the media player itself has labeled controls, keyboard operation, and a visible focus indicator.

Never rely on color alone

If color communicates status, category, or an instruction, add text, an icon with an accessible name, a pattern, or another redundant cue. Check links, buttons, alerts, charts, and validation messages in grayscale and with common color-vision differences.

Make every interaction work without a mouse

Keyboard access is a high-value manual check because it exposes failures that an automated scan may not understand. Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move through the page, Enter or Space to activate controls, arrow keys where a widget pattern requires them, and Escape to close dismissible interfaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start at the top of the document. Confirm that the first interactive items are logical and that a visible skip link can move focus to the main content.
  2. Follow the focus order. It should match the reading and visual order. A control must not receive focus while hidden, and focus must not jump unexpectedly after an update.
  3. Operate every component. Open menus, accordions, tabs, carousels, date pickers, dialogs, and custom buttons without touching a pointer device.
  4. Check focus visibility. The indicator must remain distinguishable against its background and must not be covered by sticky headers or other content.
  5. Complete forms. Reach each field, understand its label and instructions, trigger validation, read the error, correct the value, and submit successfully.
  6. Verify overlays and dialogs. When one opens, focus should move into it; while it is modal, background controls should not be reachable; when it closes, focus should return sensibly.

Do not remove the browser’s focus outline without supplying a stronger, consistently visible replacement. Avoid positive tabindex values, which create a focus order that is difficult to maintain. Prefer native links, buttons, details, and form controls before building custom widgets; native semantics provide keyboard behavior and announcements that scripts otherwise have to reproduce.

Use semantic HTML before ARIA

Semantic elements communicate purpose to browsers and assistive technology. Use a real <button> for an action, a link for navigation, a heading for a section title, a list for a list, and a <label> associated with each form control. Keep one main landmark for the page’s primary content and give repeated regions meaningful labels when more than one exists.

ARIA can clarify a custom component, but it cannot make an incorrectly built control fully accessible by itself. A role without matching keyboard behavior, state changes, focus management, and an accessible name can make a component harder to use. Validate that the name announced by assistive technology matches the visible purpose and that expanded, selected, pressed, and disabled states update when the interface changes.

Check contrast, zoom, and responsive text

Evaluate both text and meaningful non-text controls. Check normal text, large text, placeholder text, icons that act as buttons, form borders, chart elements, and focus indicators against their backgrounds. Do not assume that a color palette that looks acceptable on a designer’s monitor remains readable in dark mode, high zoom, or a different display.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Increase text size and browser zoom; confirm that words, controls, and error messages remain visible.
  • Allow content to reflow at narrow widths without clipping, overlapping, or requiring two-dimensional scrolling for ordinary reading.
  • Test increased line spacing and paragraph spacing so content does not collide or disappear.
  • Check fixed headers, cookie notices, chat buttons, and sticky toolbars for content that they cover when focus moves.
  • Review images and embedded frames so they scale or provide an alternative when the viewport changes.

Review plugins, page builders, and custom blocks

Inspect the front-end HTML and behavior of every extension, especially those that insert menus, sliders, pop-ups, forms, icons, analytics consent controls, or third-party embeds. Confirm that injected controls have accessible names, that headings remain logical, and that scripts do not alter focus order or trap users.

When a component fails, isolate whether the defect comes from the plugin, its settings, your template, or custom CSS and JavaScript. Update the component if a documented fix exists; otherwise configure a simpler native pattern, replace the component, or remove it. Do not leave an inaccessible widget in place because an overlay claims to compensate for it. An overlay cannot reliably repair missing labels, poor keyboard behavior, incorrect reading order, or inaccessible third-party content.

Retest after updates. A plugin change can alter markup even when your settings remain unchanged, and a new block pattern can introduce a heading skip or unlabeled button into otherwise clean templates.

Test in layers, not with one scan

Automated tools are useful for finding missing labels, duplicate IDs, some contrast failures, and structural problems. They cannot determine whether alternative text is meaningful, whether a keyboard journey makes sense, whether focus is visible in every state, or whether a screen reader announcement is understandable. Treat scan output as a defect list, not proof of conformance.

Test layer Method Finds Limits
Automated check Run an accessibility checker across representative templates and logged-in and logged-out states. Common markup, label, ID, heading, and contrast issues. Cannot judge meaning, usability, or every interaction state.
Keyboard pass Use Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, arrow keys, and Escape only. Keyboard traps, skipped controls, poor order, invisible focus, unusable dialogs and forms. Does not show how content is announced or whether visual meaning is conveyed.
Assistive-technology pass Use at least one screen reader or another relevant assistive technology on key journeys. Unclear names, roles, states, reading order, landmark and heading navigation, and announcement timing. One tool and browser combination cannot represent every user or setup.
Visual and reflow pass Resize text, zoom, narrow the viewport, inspect contrast, and check spacing. Clipping, overlap, covered focus, low contrast, and layouts that fail when text grows. Visual inspection alone will not expose semantic or keyboard defects.

Test a representative set of pages: global navigation and footer, a long article, an archive or search result, a form with errors, a media page, a page using custom blocks, and any authenticated or transactional flow. Save the URL, component, observed behavior, expected behavior, severity, owner, and retest result for each issue.

Common failures and practical fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix direction
Tab skips a visible control A clickable element is a styled container or has been removed from the focus order. Use a native link or button, remove inappropriate tabindex values, and retest the complete sequence.
Focus disappears behind a sticky header Positioned elements cover the focused item. Adjust scroll margins, stacking, and responsive styles so the focused control remains visible.
A dialog can be reached behind its backdrop Focus is not contained while the dialog is modal. Move focus into the dialog, keep background content inert or otherwise unavailable, and return focus when it closes.
Screen reader announces “button” with no purpose The control has no accessible name, or an icon-only button lacks a text alternative. Add a visible label or programmatic name that describes the action; verify it in the accessibility tree.
Form errors are visible but not announced Error text is not associated with the field or focus is not moved sensibly. Connect the message to the control, provide a summary when useful, and ensure the correction path is clear.
Headings jump from one level to another Visual styling was chosen independently of document structure. Restore a logical hierarchy and change appearance with CSS rather than heading levels.
Mobile content is cut off Fixed widths, non-wrapping text, or overlays assume a large viewport. Allow reflow, wrapping, scalable media, and a usable close or dismiss control.
A scan reports no errors but users still struggle Automated coverage was mistaken for conformance. Perform keyboard and assistive-technology testing and review the meaning of content with a human.

Maintain accessibility after launch

Accessibility is ongoing because publishing changes the interface. Add an accessibility check to the workflow for new pages, campaigns, media, forms, and block patterns. Require contributors to choose meaningful headings, link text, and alternative text before content is approved.

  • Keep an issue log with a reproducible URL, affected component, severity, owner, fix, and retest date.
  • Run automated checks after theme, plugin, template, and major content changes.
  • Repeat keyboard and assistive-technology journeys after changes to navigation, forms, dialogs, or page builders.
  • Review focus styles, contrast, zoom, and mobile reflow when CSS or branding changes.
  • Provide a visible way for visitors to report an accessibility barrier and route reports to someone who can investigate.
  • Retain version information for WordPress, the theme, plugins, browsers, and assistive technology used during testing.

Direct answers to common WordPress accessibility questions

Is an accessibility-ready theme enough?

No. It is a useful starting point and a baseline review, not evidence that your complete site conforms to WCAG 2.2 AA. Your content, plugins, customizations, embedded services, and updates still need inspection and testing.

What is the best accessibility plugin?

There is no universal best choice. The WordPress plugin directory has no general accessibility requirement, and a plugin cannot correct every defect in theme markup, content, keyboard behavior, or third-party widgets. Evaluate any candidate by its keyboard and focus behavior, semantic output, form and error handling, contrast, screen-reader announcements, mobile reflow, compatibility with your builder and other plugins, update history, and documented testing and remediation process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I make my site ADA compliant?

Do not promise compliance because a plugin, overlay, or theme carries a label. Build and test toward WCAG 2.2 AA, document the work, maintain it as dependencies and content change, and obtain advice appropriate to your organization and jurisdiction for legal obligations. The DOJ’s March 18, 2022 guidance makes clear why inaccessible web content matters, but it does not turn one technical setting into a universal legal determination.

Bottom line

Build accessibility into the WordPress specification, start with an accessibility-ready theme, use semantic structure and accessible content practices, inspect every plugin and custom component, and test representative journeys with automation, a keyboard, and assistive technology. Keep an issue log, assign fixes, and rerun the checks after updates. That process is more dependable than relying on a label, a single scan, or an overlay.
