WordPress 7.1 is safe to update to when your hosting stack, extensions, custom code, backups, and rollback plan are ready. Version 7.1, codenamed “Mary Lou,” was released on August 19, 2026. You can install it from Dashboard > Updates or from the release archive. Do not treat the update as a single button click: core files and the database change together, so an untested plugin, unsupported PHP version, or incomplete backup can turn a routine upgrade into an outage.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
What WordPress 7.1 changes and why preparation matters
WordPress 7.1 has a database version (db_version) of 61833. During the upgrade, WordPress replaces the files in the main installation and may run a database upgrade before returning you to the administrator area. The release page points administrators to the Field Guide and developer notes for feature-specific behavior; read those notes if your site depends on an affected API, editor feature, multisite behavior, or other documented change.

The practical question is not whether 7.1 is universally safe. It is whether your site can run the new core with its current PHP and database versions, extensions, customizations, and integrations—and whether you can restore the previous working state if it cannot.
Check your hosting versions first
The WordPress Hosting Team distinguishes between preferred versions for a new 7.1 installation and the oldest versions that may still satisfy compatibility checks. They are not equivalent security recommendations.

| Component | Recommended target for a new WordPress 7.1 installation | Absolute compatibility floor | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| PHP | 8.4.x or 8.5.x | 7.4+ | PHP 7.4 may pass a compatibility requirement but is end of life and should not be a security target. |
| MySQL | 8.4.x | 5.5.5+ | MySQL 5.5.5 is a legacy floor, not a recommended production version. |
| MariaDB | 10.11.x, 11.4.x, or 11.8.x | 5.5.5+ | Use a supported MariaDB branch where your host provides one; verify the exact server version rather than assuming it from a control-panel label. |
Record the exact PHP version, database engine, and database version before changing anything. If your host only offers an end-of-life branch, ask which supported upgrade path is available and whether the host can switch PHP back quickly if the site fails. Do not change PHP and WordPress core simultaneously unless you have tested that combination or have a host-assisted recovery plan; changing two variables makes the cause of a failure harder to isolate.
Build a pre-update inventory
Create a short, dated record that another administrator could use to reproduce the current site. Include:
- Current WordPress version and whether the installation is single-site or multisite.
- PHP version, database engine and version, web server if known, and relevant server limits such as memory and upload size.
- Active theme, child theme, inactive themes, active plugins, inactive plugins, and the source of each package (Dashboard, premium vendor, or manual upload).
- Custom code in a child theme, mu-plugins, snippets, autoloaders, deployment scripts, or modified core and distributed theme files.
- Cron jobs, scheduled events, queues, webhooks, REST or XML-RPC consumers, payment or membership connections, email providers, analytics, search services, and CDN or firewall rules.
- Application caching, object caching, CDN caching, browser caching, and any host-level cache that may hide a change.
Save screenshots or exports of unusual settings, administrator roles, URL settings, and integration credentials locations. Never put secrets in a public checklist; record where they are stored so they can be verified after restoration.
Make backups that can actually restore the site
Official WordPress guidance requires a backup of both the database and files before an upgrade. A database-only export cannot restore PHP files, themes, plugins, uploads, or configuration; a files-only copy cannot restore posts, settings, users, orders, or other database records.

Capture both backup sets
- Database: export every WordPress table, including custom tables created by plugins. Keep the table prefix and character-set information with the export.
- Files: copy the entire WordPress installation, including
wp-content, uploads, plugins, themes, mu-plugins, and configuration files. Preserve web-server rules and any deployment-specific files that affect routing. - Separate storage: keep a copy outside the production server or hosting account. A backup stored on the same disk may disappear with the site.
- Version record: label the backup with the WordPress, PHP, database, theme, and plugin versions it represents.
Prove the restoration path
A backup is not a rollback plan until you know how to restore it. Confirm that you can obtain a clean database, upload files, change the PHP version if required, and point the domain or a temporary hostname at the restored copy. If the host performs restores, ask what the request process is and how long it normally takes. For a staging restore, check that media paths, scheduled events, and database credentials work; do not send real transactional email or process live payments from that copy.
Protect custom code and theme changes
The core upgrade replaces files and folders in the main WordPress installation. Direct edits to distributed theme files can therefore be lost, and direct edits to core files are especially vulnerable. Move presentation changes into a child theme and site-specific PHP into a maintained custom-code mechanism such as a version-controlled plugin or mu-plugin. Keep a copy of any unavoidable server configuration outside the WordPress directory.

Check every plugin, theme, and integration
Core compatibility does not guarantee extension compatibility. Review the changelog and update notice for every active plugin and theme, including manually installed and premium packages whose updates do not appear in the normal Dashboard workflow.

Prioritize high-impact components
- Authentication, membership, and user-role plugins.
- Commerce, subscriptions, taxes, shipping, and payment connections.
- Form, email, SMTP, and anti-spam components.
- Page builders, editor blocks, multilingual tools, and custom fields.
- Security, caching, optimization, image, and database-maintenance plugins.
- Search, analytics, CRM, advertising, webhook, REST, and other third-party integrations.
Replace abandoned extensions or obtain a compatibility statement from the author. An extension that has not been maintained may continue to load while silently breaking a hook, scheduled task, REST response, or checkout path. Disable unused plugins rather than carrying unnecessary compatibility and security exposure into the upgrade.
Test on staging before production
Clone the site to a staging server or local environment whenever possible. The copy should use the same PHP and database versions, web-server behavior, extensions, and representative content as production. Mask personal data where appropriate and block outbound email, payment, and webhook traffic.

Run a focused acceptance test
- Log in as an administrator and as a normal user. Check role capabilities and password-reset flow.
- Create, edit, schedule, preview, and publish a test post or page. Verify the editor, media library, revisions, permalinks, and scheduled publishing.
- Submit every important form and confirm validation, spam handling, email delivery, and storage of submissions.
- Exercise checkout, account, subscription, refund, and tax paths in a non-live mode if the site takes payments.
- Search for several known posts, products, and users. Check filters, pagination, redirects, and indexing behavior.
- Upload an image and a document, view responsive layouts, and test any image-processing or offload service.
- Call critical REST or other APIs from a safe client and inspect authentication, response codes, and payloads.
- Run scheduled events, queues, imports, backups, and cron-triggered jobs. Confirm that the expected user, timing, and server process still exist.
- Clear staging caches and test both logged-in and anonymous views. Inspect browser-console errors and server and PHP logs.
Write down the expected result for each test. A green homepage is not evidence that publishing, email, payments, cron, or integrations work.
Choose an upgrade route deliberately
| Route | Best fit | Advantages | Risks and controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-click production update | Small, well-maintained site with verified backups and low operational impact | Fastest path and no staging maintenance | Limited rehearsal; use a change window, confirm the backup, and keep the rollback procedure open. |
| Staged update | Commerce, membership, high-traffic, customized, or integration-heavy site | Reveals extension and workflow failures before production | Requires a representative clone and a plan to copy or reconcile changes made on production after the clone was created. |
| Managed-host-assisted update | Site owner lacks PHP controls, logs, database access, or restoration expertise | Host may provide snapshots, PHP switching, logs, and recovery assistance | Confirm support scope, restore time, backup retention, and who performs the database and file rollback. |
Compare routes using rollback readiness and restore time, PHP and database support status, plugin and theme compatibility, staging coverage, post-update verification, and access to logs and PHP controls. The cheapest route is not the safest if it leaves you unable to restore service.

Update WordPress 7.1 in a controlled window
Schedule the change when support staff, host contacts, and site owners are available. Avoid launching immediately before a campaign, publication deadline, billing run, or other event that makes diagnosis difficult.
- Announce the maintenance window if visitors or staff need notice. Pause deployments and content changes that could be overwritten by a restore.
- Take and label a fresh database-and-files backup. Verify that the backup completed and that the restoration instructions are accessible.
- Confirm the recorded PHP and database versions, extension status, and staging test results.
- Sign in to WordPress and open Dashboard > Updates. Start the WordPress 7.1 core update, or use the official release archive when your deployment process requires a manual package.
- Allow WordPress to unpack and verify the files and complete its database upgrade. Do not interrupt the process or delete temporary files while it is running.
- Reload the administrator area. If WordPress displays a database-upgrade prompt, complete it before testing front-end features.
- Update plugins and themes in controlled groups, beginning with packages whose compatibility notices require the newer versions. Check the site after each related group rather than updating everything blindly.
- Clear application, object, CDN, and browser caches only where stale content could mask the change. Record what was cleared so a cache problem is not confused with a code problem.
Verify the live site after the database upgrade
Use the same acceptance tests that passed on staging, now against production. At minimum, verify administrator login, a normal user account, publishing, media, forms, email delivery, search, scheduled events, analytics, caching, and every revenue or lead path. Check the Site Health screen, PHP and web-server logs, failed scheduled events, background queues, and integration dashboards.

What to do if the update breaks the site
The site is stuck in maintenance mode
If a failed update leaves maintenance mode active, connect to the WordPress directory with the file manager or SFTP and remove the .maintenance file. Reload the site and retry only after checking logs and confirming that the backup is intact. Do not remove unrelated files from the WordPress directory.
Best Value
PHP errors appear after the change
Read the PHP error log to identify the extension or theme that fails. If PHP was changed as part of the upgrade, the host may need to return the site to its previous PHP version before a backup can be restored. Ask the host to perform that switch when you do not have a tested control-panel procedure.
The front end works but data is missing or incorrect
Stop writes that could make recovery harder, then compare the database and files used by the running site. Restoring only files or only the database can leave code and data out of sync. Use the complete pre-update pair and document the exact versions and configuration restored.
A plugin or theme causes a fatal error
Use the error log, recovery mode if available, or the file system to deactivate the suspected extension. Restore service first, then reproduce the failure on staging with the same versions. Contact the extension author or replace the abandoned package; do not repeatedly toggle updates on production without a known-good restore point.
The rollback itself fails
Do not assume a major-version rollback is automatic. A reliable rollback may require the prior WordPress files, database, PHP version, configuration, uploads, and compatible extension versions. If the host cannot restore those components together, escalate with the labeled backup and your inventory rather than improvising partial changes.
When should you postpone WordPress 7.1?
- You have no recent, separate copy of both files and database.
- No one can explain how to restore the backup or switch PHP if needed.
- A critical plugin, theme, or integration is abandoned, untested, or explicitly incompatible.
- The server is running an unsupported legacy PHP or database branch and no upgrade path has been tested.
- You cannot provide a staging copy or a maintenance window for a site whose failure would affect customers, revenue, or time-sensitive publishing.
- Recent production changes are undocumented, so you cannot tell what a rollback would remove.
Postponing is a risk decision, not a permanent exemption. Use the time to update the host stack, replace unsupported extensions, document custom code, create a tested restore, and rehearse the critical workflows.
WordPress 7.1 readiness checklist
- Release and installation path confirmed: WordPress 7.1, released August 19, 2026, via Dashboard > Updates or the release archive.
- Current WordPress, PHP, database, theme, plugin, custom-code, cron, cache, and integration inventory recorded.
- PHP and database versions checked against the recommended targets and compatibility floors.
- Complete database and file backups stored separately, labeled, and restorable.
- Customizations moved out of distributed core and theme files or otherwise documented.
- Every active extension checked for 7.1 compatibility; abandoned components replaced or isolated.
- Staging clone tested for login, publishing, forms, checkout, search, media, APIs, cron, email, and caching.
- Change window, host contacts, logs, and rollback owner confirmed.
- Post-update verification and monitoring scheduled.
The practical verdict
Update to WordPress 7.1 when the checklist is complete, not simply because the update appears in the Dashboard. The release can be installed through the normal update path, but safety depends on the surrounding system: use supported PHP and database versions, protect customizations, check every extension, test representative workflows, and keep a complete files-and-database rollback. If any of those controls is missing, fix that gap before changing core.
