Wordle Strategy: How to Choose Better Starting Words

A useful Wordle opener tests distinct, common letters in plausible positions. See how to choose a starter, read feedback, and understand why rankings differ.

A strong Wordle opener uses five distinct, common letters in plausible positions—but there is no single best word for every player or every scoring method. The practical goal is to make the green, yellow, and gray tiles narrow the answer list, then use that information carefully on each guess.

What makes a Wordle starting word useful?

Wordle gives you six guesses to find a five-letter answer. Green means the letter is correct and in the correct position; yellow means it appears in the answer but belongs elsewhere; gray means it is absent, with repeated-letter counts affecting how tiles are assigned. The rules and simulation described by Insight SFI explain these mechanics in its 2022 overview.

An opener can win immediately, but its more reliable strategic value is information. A useful word samples several possible answer letters and positions, so its pattern of tiles divides the remaining candidates. A word with five different letters usually tests more possibilities than one that repeats a letter. Position matters too: a common letter in a plausible spot has a chance to turn green, not merely confirm that the letter exists.

That is why raw letter frequency alone does not settle the question. A strategy can aim to reduce the expected number of possible answers after feedback, maximize information, lower average guesses, improve real-player results, or simply offer an enjoyable chance of a first-guess solve. Each objective can produce a different “best” word.

Which starter should you choose?

For a practical default, pick a word you can spell and remember, containing five distinct, common letters in sensible positions. Use it consistently enough to learn how its feedback narrows candidates. You do not need to force two vowels into every opening guess: more vowels can reveal useful information, but vowel count alone is not a measure of overall efficiency.

SLATE: a strong all-around reference point

SLATE is a useful practical choice, not an official or timeless winner. TechRadar’s 2024 position-frequency analysis favored it, and The New York Times used it as a comparison point in an analysis of human games. Those are different kinds of evidence: one is a letter-position method; the other measures observed player outcomes.

IRATE, RAISE, and ARISE: candidate-reduction rankings

NYT Game Solver’s third-party analysis, crawled in 2026, ranked IRATE, RAISE, and ARISE first, second, and third by expected remaining candidates across its tracked corpus of 1,810 answers. It estimated about 47.6 expected answers left for IRATE and 48.4 for RAISE. These figures describe that corpus and metric; they are not official NYT rankings or a guarantee of how many candidates a player will face in a particular game.

CRANE and TRACE: familiar varied-letter options

CRANE and TRACE are examples of openers with distinct, frequently useful letters. The New York Times analysis also identifies them among WordleBot-approved options. They may suit players who want a straightforward, memorable opener rather than a mathematically optimized word.

SALET: an optimization result with a word-list caveat

TechRadar discusses a separate optimization that favors SALET, while noting that the word was not in the older 2,309-word answer list discussed in that analysis. That historical list should not be treated as a current official list, and a solver’s optimum for one corpus does not automatically make the word the best human opener.

Does a vowel-heavy opener like ADIEU work better?

ADIEU and AUDIO are popular because they test several vowels at once. That can be appealing if discovering vowel positions is your priority, but it leaves fewer slots for consonants and does not automatically produce more useful feedback overall.

In a 2023 analysis of roughly 515 million player games, New York Times authors Josh Katz and Aatish Bhatia found that players who started with ADIEU averaged about one-third of a turn more than those who started with SLATE. They also reported failure rates of 3.6% for ADIEU starters and 1.7% for SLATE starters. This was an observational comparison: the authors cautioned that player differences could help explain the gap and wrote, “We can’t say for certain that starting with ADIEU causes players to do worse.” Treat the finding as evidence about observed groups, not proof that changing the opener alone will improve your results.

How to use the feedback after your first guess

  1. Keep every green in place. A green tile fixes both the letter and its position, so do not move it in a later guess.
  2. Move yellow letters to untested positions. A yellow letter must remain in the answer but cannot stay in the position where it turned yellow.
  3. Eliminate gray letters carefully. A gray tile usually rules out that letter, but repeated letters can make the feedback more subtle. If a guess contains a letter more than once, a gray copy does not always mean the answer contains none; interpret it alongside any green or yellow copy.
  4. Choose the next word for the remaining candidates. If the answer is not obvious, use a guess that tests useful untried letters while preserving all known constraints. A word that gathers information can be better than a low-confidence attempt to guess the answer immediately.
  5. Use a second information word selectively. A fresh set of untried letters may help when many candidates remain, but it costs a turn and must respect the game mode’s constraints. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on how much the first guess has already narrowed the possibilities.

How the leading recommendations differ

Word or approach What supports it Best understood as
IRATE, RAISE, ARISE NYT Game Solver ranking over its tracked 1,810-answer corpus, crawled in 2026 Candidate reduction under that third-party metric and corpus
SLATE TechRadar’s 2024 positional-frequency analysis; NYT’s human-game comparison with ADIEU in 2023 Position-aware frequency and a human-outcome benchmark
CRANE, TRACE Named among WordleBot-approved openers in the NYT analysis; examples of varied-letter openings Familiar, practical options
SALET TechRadar’s separate optimization discussion A result tied to a particular older list and solver objective
ADIEU, AUDIO Popular vowel-heavy choices; ADIEU was compared with SLATE in NYT’s observational player analysis Vowel discovery, not a demonstrated universal advantage

Why published rankings disagree

Analyses may use different answer lists, guess lists, and definitions of success. One may minimize expected guesses, another may measure expected candidates remaining or information, while a player study records what people actually did. A simulated solver can also choose words that are less familiar or less convenient for a human to remember.

The source datasets here are not interchangeable. Insight SFI’s 2022 simulation evaluated one million simulated games using a pool of 2,500 five-letter words and reported that 95% were solved within six guesses, with about four rounds on average. Those are the study’s results for its pool and simulator, not a promise about current Wordle play. Its release also reported that starting with the right one or two words performed better in its experiment than relying on a fixed three-word set.

Historical research and simulations rely on their own word lists, while NYT Game Solver’s ranking uses its stated 1,810-answer corpus. The five most frequent letters reported in TechRadar’s 2024 analysis—E, A, R, O, and T—belong to the answer list that analysis examined; they should not be read as a live distribution for the current NYT game. No single ranking here establishes an official, permanent best opener.

A simple way to compare openers for your own play

  1. Choose your objective. Decide whether you care most about average guesses, candidate elimination, solving reliably within six attempts, a possible first-guess hit, or an opener that is easy to recall.
  2. Compare words against that objective. For information and candidate reduction, favor distinct, common letters and useful placements. For first-guess potential, also check whether the word is eligible as an answer in the game’s current list; answer-list status can change.
  3. Stick with the choice long enough to learn from it. Consistent openings make it easier to interpret patterns and refine your second guess. Switch if the approach does not suit your play, rather than treating a published ranking as a rule.

For background on the different methods, see Insight SFI’s 2022 simulation and rules overview, the historical arXiv paper on character statistics, the New York Times analysis of player games, NYT Game Solver’s ranking and method, and TechRadar’s position-frequency discussion.
