Wordle Hard Mode requires every later guess to use the clues you have already uncovered: keep green letters in their correct positions and use yellow letters in different positions. Choose it if you enjoy building each guess around a narrowing pattern; use standard mode if you want the freedom to test new letters without carrying every clue forward.
How Wordle Hard Mode works
Wordle marks each guessed letter to show how it relates to the answer. The New York Times Help Center explains that green means the letter is correct and in the correct position, yellow means it is in the answer but in the wrong position, and gray means it is not in the answer. In Hard Mode, revealed hints must be used in subsequent guesses, according to a Tom’s Guide explanation of the mode. In practice, a green letter stays in its slot, and a yellow letter must appear somewhere else. Your next guess therefore has to fit the known pattern rather than simply try unrelated letters.

A gray tile in that situation does not always mean the letter is wholly absent. The NYT Help Center’s basic color key does not detail this repeated-letter case, so interpret repeated-letter feedback with care.

What changes strategically
Hard Mode reduces guess flexibility. In standard mode, you can spend a turn on a word that tests several letters you have not tried, even if it ignores a green or yellow clue. Hard Mode rules out that kind of probe when it fails to honor the clues already revealed. Instead, you need to think about plausible answers that fit the pattern and choose guesses that help distinguish among them.
That trade-off is a consequence of the rule, not evidence that one mode produces better results. The available sources do not establish a reliable comparison of solve rates or average guesses between modes.

How early guesses differ
Tracy Bennett, identified as Wordle editor in an Apple App Store editorial, recommends broad letter coverage early for players who are not using Hard Mode:

Bennett’s advice is explicitly qualified for standard play. In Hard Mode, you must instead work with the clues you have already revealed and test your intuition about which answer fits. The quoted opening strategy is advice, not a rule or a guaranteed way to solve the puzzle. Read the App Store editorial.

Use Hard Mode when the constraint itself makes the puzzle more satisfying. Prefer standard mode when you want the option to sacrifice a turn’s pattern fit to learn about several other letters. Neither choice is established as universally harder, easier, or more successful.
