Moderate spoilers: This guide reveals who is attacking the Redanian transports and the contract’s central choice. Geralt discovers that Scoia’tael led by Vernossiel—not a monster—are responsible. You can kill them for Captain Felix Grubb, let them go, or promise to keep their secret and later betray that promise.

What is the Woodland Beast choice?

Woodland Beast is a Witcher contract in Velen, associated with the Border Post. Captain Felix Grubb posts a bounty after Redanian transport wagons are attacked. Geralt investigates the scene and follows the tracks, only to find that Scoia’tael are behind the attacks. The contract’s monster-hunt framing gives way to a choice about what to do with the group.

The decision is not simply whether to finish a monster contract: it is whether to carry out the captain’s demand or leave the Scoia’tael alone.

What are the available choices?

Route Geralt’s decision Immediate outcome
Kill the Scoia’tael Fight the group and fulfill the captain’s demand. The quest objectives mention collecting squirrel tails as evidence; on a route where Geralt has met the commander and agreed to kill the group, they also direct him to retrieve his weapons before returning for the reward. Geralt kills the group and can report back to the captain. Exact coin and inventory results are not established by the cited quest material.
Let them go Leave the Scoia’tael alive rather than carry out the contract against them. The quest records that Geralt lets them be. Reference material associates a Letter of Safe Conduct and other loot with this outcome context, but does not establish a definitive item-by-item reward comparison.
Promise secrecy, then betray it Promise not to reveal the group’s secret, then change your mind after the reveal. This is a distinct journal outcome: it involves breaking a promise, not simply choosing to fight the Scoia’tael from the outset. Exact reward details are not established.

Does the choice affect the wider story?

The documented differences are in the immediate quest outcome, including whether Geralt kills the group and how his actions are recorded. The quest reference says the Scoia’tael leave their camp after the contract, either on their own or apparently following a Redanian ambush depending on the outcome; that detail is uncertain and should not be read as evidence of a major campaign branch.

The cited quest references do not establish a major effect on The Witcher 3’s main ending or later story arcs. Choose based on how you want Geralt to handle the contract and his word, rather than expecting a proven long-term story consequence.
