Yes, a WooCommerce review plugin can slow parts of a store or use extra resources, but installing one does not automatically make a site slower. The impact depends on how the plugin works alongside your theme, hosting, caching, and other extensions. There is no established, universal speed penalty for review plugins; you need to test the pages affected on your own store.
What determines a review plugin’s performance impact?
A plugin may add scripts or styles, make database queries, or load review features on pages where they are not needed. Those costs vary by plugin and configuration, and may interact with the rest of the site. A review feature that performs acceptably on one store might behave differently with another theme, host, cache setup, or collection of extensions.

WooCommerce’s performance guidance recommends testing an extension both activated and deactivated to understand its effect: Performance best practices for WooCommerce extensions. Its guidance does not publish a general benchmark showing how many milliseconds or what percentage of speed a review plugin adds.
How to check whether a plugin is slowing your store
Compare the same pages under comparable conditions. Choose the product, category, or other page where the slowdown is noticeable, then measure it with the plugin active and inactive. Keep other conditions as consistent as practical, including the page, device, network, and cache state. A single difference is a clue, not proof; repeat the comparison if results vary.
#1 Best Overall
- Record a baseline. Measure the affected page with the review plugin enabled and note the result and conditions.
- Deactivate the suspected plugin. Repeat the measurement on the same page without changing other extensions or settings.
- Compare results. If the page improves consistently, the plugin may be contributing. If it does not, investigate other causes rather than assuming that removing reviews will improve speed.
- Isolate other extensions if necessary. WooCommerce recommends deactivating extensions and reactivating them one at a time while checking for changes. Change one variable at a time so the comparison remains useful.
WooCommerce’s starting point for a slow site is to identify its root cause, not to assume a particular extension is responsible: Troubleshooting a slow site.
What to inspect in the plugin and the rest of the store
Tools can help narrow the investigation. WooCommerce names Query Monitor and WP Hive as options for evaluating plugin performance. Use them to investigate, then verify any suspected impact with measurements on the pages your customers use.
Rank #2
- Does the plugin load scripts and styles only on pages that need them?
- Are its database queries efficient, and does it work with your caching setup?
- Are noncritical review elements delayed appropriately?
- Are hosting resources, CDN and cache configuration, image sizes, minification, memory, or the theme causing the slowdown instead?
WooCommerce’s extension guide recommends a Lighthouse Performance score of 90 or above as a development benchmark for a simple WooCommerce site. That is a recommendation for development—not a guaranteed threshold for every live store and not a result for review plugins.

How to interpret plugin performance claims
Performance statements from a plugin’s publisher describe that product; they are not independent comparisons against other plugins or proof of how it will perform on your store. For example, WooCommerce’s Rotating Reviews documentation says the plugin uses “lightweight code, minimal database queries, and no external API calls.” Treat that as the vendor’s description, then test the affected pages in your own setup.
WooCommerce Product Reviews Pro documentation says video uploads are not supported to preserve site performance and customer experience. That is the product’s stated design decision; it does not establish that video reviews make every store slow.

The available official performance guidance does not establish a reliable cross-plugin ranking or a fixed slowdown for review plugins as a category. To compare options, check which pages load their assets, how they handle database queries and caching, which review and media features they provide, and—most importantly—how each performs on the same store and pages under comparable conditions.
