It organizes applications around reusable models of operational assets and provides tools for development, visualization, control, and data integration.
What is AVEVA System Platform?
AVEVA System Platform is an industrial operations software platform. AVEVA describes it as an object-based environment for creating applications that connect operational assets and processes with the people who monitor and manage them. Its stated uses include supervisory and advanced SCADA, MES, and IIoT applications.

AVEVA identifies System Platform among the software products previously marketed under the Wonderware name. The legacy term “Wonderware System Platform” therefore refers to the product now presented as AVEVA System Platform, not a separate currently branded platform.
How does it work?
The platform uses software objects and reusable templates to represent equipment, processes, and other operational assets. Teams can standardize a model in a template, then use derived objects to apply that pattern to multiple assets or locations. The intended benefit is reuse and consistency in application engineering; the actual design depends on the organization’s needs.

Application Server and IDE
Application Server is a central component. In the documentation for System Platform 2023 R2 Patch 01, AVEVA describes it as including both a runtime element and the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) used to configure applications. The documented workflows include configuring and maintaining application objects, managing IDE and application security, deploying applications, monitoring runtime status, and troubleshooting.
Visualization and operational information
System Platform can be used with AVEVA OMI and managed InTouch applications. AVEVA’s datasheet describes responsive visualization for workstations and mobile devices, alongside access to operational information such as real-time data, alarms, history, graphics, reports, and work orders. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance findings.
Rank #2
Integration and scale
AVEVA describes the platform as bringing control and operational data together with application development and visualization. It also describes distributed architectures and the ability to add application engines for horizontal scaling. The appropriate topology depends on the requirements and design of a particular deployment; the product description alone does not establish how a given installation will perform.

How is System Platform different from HMI and MES?
These terms refer to related but distinct roles. System Platform is the broader operational platform for application development, control, visualization, and data integration. InTouch HMI is focused on human-machine-interface visualization. MES focuses on managing production workflows and execution. AVEVA positions System Platform and MES as complementary layers rather than interchangeable names for the same function.
Rank #3
| Product or layer | Primary role described by AVEVA |
|---|---|
| AVEVA System Platform | Operational application development, control, visualization, and data integration |
| InTouch HMI | HMI visualization |
| MES | Production workflow management and execution |
When evaluating which role is needed, consider whether the requirement is to build a broader operational application and asset model, provide an operator interface, manage production execution, or combine these functions. Detailed boundaries and available features can vary by product and release.

Version matters for migration, licensing, operating-system compatibility, and security instructions. The Application Server guide and readme cited here apply to System Platform 2023 R2 Patch 01; their details should not be assumed to apply unchanged to other releases. That release’s readme describes supported migration paths with minimum source versions and server-based licensing that must be activated before use.
Rank #4
- Identify the installed release and the exact target release before planning a migration.
- Read the target release’s readme, installation guide, and compatibility information for supported source versions, operating systems, and security requirements.
- Verify the applicable licensing method and activation steps for that target release.
For a practical introduction, AVEVA’s System Platform Get Started 2023 R2 guide points to task-based documentation covering Application Server, Industrial Graphics, scripting, Object Viewer, alarms, and events. Consult documentation matching the release actually being installed.
