Any paperwork deadlines and the eventual payment timing depend on the specific challenge and its rules.
How to find out whether you won
DEV posts winner announcements on the platform. Check the challenge page’s Key Dates for the announcement date and look for its linked announcement post. The DEV Challenge hub describes announcements as occurring the week after a challenge closes, but the individual challenge page is the place to check dates for that event.

When DEV will contact you
DEV’s stated contact window is within, at most, 10 business days of the announcement date. The message goes to the email address associated with your DEV profile and explains how to claim the prize. This is a deadline for claim instructions—not a promise that money will be deposited within 10 business days.

Keep an eye on that inbox, including spam or junk folders. If the window passes without a message, revisit the announcement and challenge page for updated instructions or a contact route.
What you may need to do to claim a cash prize
Some cash-prize claims require eligibility and tax paperwork before they can be completed. Depending on the challenge, requested documents may include an eligibility affidavit, a publicity or liability release, and tax information such as a W-9, Social Security number, or Federal Tax ID. Do not send sensitive information except through the channel and process specified in the official instructions.

Where documents are requested, DEV’s stated deadline is seven business days after the first notification email. Read the message closely, follow its submission directions, and use the challenge’s listed contact route promptly if anything is unclear.
What “getting paid” means for your challenge
Check the specific challenge’s prize list: not every award is cash. Challenge rewards can include cash, memberships, badges, gifts, or other challenge-specific items. For one concrete example, DEV’s 2026 GitHub Finish-Up-A-Thon page listed a $3,000 total pool split into ten $300 cash awards, plus DEV++ membership and an exclusive badge for each winner. Those terms apply to that challenge only; they are not a standard award for every DEV Challenge.

The reviewed challenge pages do not establish a universal payment processor, payment method, or date when funds arrive. The winner email and that challenge’s official rules are the sources to consult for payment details. Do not treat the 10-business-day contact window as a cash-arrival estimate.
What changes if your winning entry was a team project?
DEV does not divide a team prize among contributors. The team must agree on its own split. The GitHub Finish-Up-A-Thon FAQ states: “DEV does not handle prize-splitting, so in the event that your submission wins, you will need to split the prize amongst yourselves.”

Some challenge pages also ask teams to provide participant handles for badge awards. Check the relevant page and agree on the distribution before claiming any shared award.

Why the specific challenge rules matter
Eligibility, dates, entry requirements, allowed team arrangements, prizes, and paperwork can differ by challenge. Follow the rules linked from the exact challenge page rather than assuming another event’s requirements apply. For instance, a reviewed challenge required entrants to be at least 18, and challenge pages direct participants to the official rules for location eligibility; those are event-specific terms, not universal rules for every DEV challenge.
