WNBA semifinals are best-of-five: the first team to win three games advances. In the 2-2-1 format, the higher seed hosts Games 1, 2 and (if needed) 5; the lower seed hosts Games 3 and 4. For the 2026 postseason, eight teams qualify regardless of conference, and regular-season tiebreakers are applied in a set order when standings ties affect playoff eligibility or home court.
How the 2026 WNBA playoff bracket works
The eight teams with the best regular-season records qualify, without separate conference brackets. The first-round matchups are seeds 1–8, 4–5, 2–7 and 3–6. How many games are WNBA semifinals?
Each semifinal is a best-of-five series, so the first team to win three games moves on. A fifth game is played only if the teams split the first four games 2–2.

The series follows a 2-2-1 pattern: the higher seed hosts Games 1 and 2, the lower seed hosts Games 3 and 4, and the higher seed hosts Game 5 if it is necessary. Home-court advantage therefore means the higher seed gets the first two games and the potential series decider at home; it does not mean every game is played in that team’s arena.

The lower seed hosts Game 2 in the first round, then Games 3 and 4 in the semifinals. In the Finals, it hosts Games 3, 4 and 6. These are the 2026 formats; check the league’s FAQ for current season details.
What happens when teams are tied?
The WNBA uses its published tiebreak procedure for “playoffs eligibility and home court advantage.” Head-to-head record comes first, but it is not the only test. The league’s standings page lists the criteria in this order:

- Winning percentage against all teams that finished the season at .500 or better.
- Point differential in games between the tied teams.
- Point differential across all games against all opponents.
The .500 comparison uses opponents’ records at the end of the regular season. The point-differential tests compare scoring margin, first in the tied teams’ head-to-head games and then across their full schedules.

The league eliminates as many teams as possible at each step. If one or more teams are eliminated, it restarts the sequence from the first criterion among the remaining tied teams. That means a multi-team tie is not necessarily resolved by one head-to-head round-robin comparison.

Why the format changed
The league approved the three-round best-of-three, best-of-five, best-of-five structure in 2021, effective in 2022, with fixed bracket advancement and no reseeding. In October 2024, the WNBA announced changes effective in 2025: first-round games would shift to a 1-1-1 home pattern, and the Finals would expand from best-of-five to best-of-seven. The 2026 FAQ and playoff page retain those formats.
Explaining the first-round venue change, WNBA Head of League Operations Bethany Donaphin said: “The new 1-1-1 structure for the First Round of the WNBA Playoffs presented by Google will guarantee a home game for both teams in a series, which was a priority based on discussions with the WNBA’s team presidents, head coaches, general managers and the Competition Committee.” The change gives each team a home game even when a first-round series ends in two games.
