Choose wkhtmltopdf when the deliverable must be a PDF, and wkhtmltoimage when it must be an image. They are separate command-line utilities from the same project, built on Qt WebKit. Before relying on either for production, check whether its older rendering engine, security constraints, and installed build’s features fit your page and deployment.
What is the practical difference?
The names describe the central distinction: wkhtmltopdf converts HTML pages into a PDF document, while wkhtmltoimage is the image-output utility. Both are open-source command-line tools in the wkhtmltopdf project, render with Qt WebKit, and can run without a display service. They are not interchangeable output switches on one command: choose the executable that matches the file your next step needs.
| Question | wkhtmltopdf | wkhtmltoimage |
|---|---|---|
| What does it produce? | A PDF document made from one or more HTML pages. | An image rendered from HTML. |
| Use it when | The result needs to be a document, such as a report or invoice. | The result needs to be an image, such as a page capture. |
| Rendering engine | Qt WebKit. | Qt WebKit. |
| What to verify first | That the installed build has the options your workflow requires and behaves correctly on the target platform. | That the installed build and its documented options meet your image-capture requirements. |
The project’s official command-line manual documents wkhtmltopdf as converting one or more HTML pages into a PDF. The project homepage’s basic example is wkhtmltopdf http://google.com google.pdf. Use that as a shape-of-command illustration, not as a production recipe: a real job should use its actual input and output paths, and should test the resulting file with its intended content.
Choose by the file your application needs
Choose wkhtmltopdf for a PDF workflow
Use wkhtmltopdf when a PDF is the required handoff: for example, when a reporting system needs to generate a document from HTML. Its documented ability to take one or more HTML pages makes it the relevant choice of these two for a multi-page PDF document. The exact layout and pagination behavior you obtain still depends on the HTML, the options used, and the particular binary you install; verify those against your real templates.

The manual includes --window-status, which waits for a page’s window status to reach a specified value before rendering. That can be relevant when the page itself exposes a status signal for readiness. It is not a guarantee that arbitrary asynchronous content has finished loading: the page must set the expected status, and the selected build must support the option. Check the manual for the exact syntax and test that the signal is set at the right time.
Choose wkhtmltoimage for an image workflow
Use wkhtmltoimage when the consumer expects an image rather than a PDF. That is the appropriate one of the pair for image capture; using the PDF utility and then converting the PDF would add a second operation and another point to validate. The project groups both programs together, but that does not mean every command-line option or build behavior is identical. Consult the documentation for the installed image utility instead of assuming a PDF option also applies to it.
When the output decision is not enough
A PDF-versus-image requirement narrows the choice, but does not settle whether wkhtmltopdf’s rendering engine is suitable. If the page depends heavily on dynamic JavaScript, the project maintainer’s status page points readers toward Puppeteer or a wrapper. For controlled report generation, it names WeasyPrint and Prince as alternatives to consider. Those are maintainer suggestions, not results of an independent comparative test; evaluate the candidate against the actual page, platform, and output requirements.
Check the engine and maintenance context before deployment
The project’s downloads page identifies 0.12.6 — the wkhtmltopdf project, 2020 as the stable series and gives June 11, 2020 as its release date. GitHub reports that the upstream wkhtmltopdf/wkhtmltopdf repository was archived on January 2, 2023 and is read-only. These are dated project-status facts, not assurances about what packages are currently available for every operating system.

The project status page discusses the age of the Qt WebKit foundation, its deprecation and eventual removal from Qt, and describes the engine used by wkhtmltopdf as old. Treat that as the maintainer’s assessment of the project’s engine context. Before deployment, confirm that a compatible package exists for your target system, that it contains the features you need, and that it passes tests on your representative pages. Distribution-provided binaries may behave differently from builds with patched Qt; the downloads page specifically notes that some features depend on patched Qt.
- Pin down the environment: record the operating system, package source, binary version, and any build details needed to reproduce the output.
- Validate the actual deliverable: render pages containing the content and layout patterns your application uses, then inspect the PDF or image rather than relying only on a successful process exit.
- Check option support: compare your intended command with the manual and verify the installed build. Do not infer feature parity from the shared project name.
- Recheck before upgrades or migrations: a different package or binary can change the available features and rendering behavior.
The cited project materials do not establish a current, independent benchmark comparing wkhtmltopdf or wkhtmltoimage with the alternatives on speed, fidelity, or security. Do not choose between them on an assumed performance ranking. Test the workload you need to run.
Keep untrusted HTML out of the rendering process
The security warning is unusually direct. Ashish Kulkarni, wkhtmltopdf maintainer, warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The project’s downloads page repeats the warning not to use the tool with untrusted HTML.
This is a warning about risk from untrusted input, not a claim that every controlled use is unsafe. The critical distinction is whether the HTML and JavaScript are trusted and controlled. If users can supply markup or scripts, do not send that content directly to the renderer. Sanitization is part of the maintainer’s warning, but do not treat it as proof that every risky input has been made safe. Reassess the architecture and the renderer choice before exposing a server-side rendering process to such content.

Even for controlled input, use an intentional trust boundary: know which application code produces the page, which data it incorporates, and whether user-controlled content can become executable markup or script. The project status page suggests considering alternatives for controlled report generation; for pages where dynamic JavaScript is central, it points to Puppeteer or a wrapper. Those suggestions do not replace a security review of the selected tool and deployment.
Getting started and validating a basic run
- Obtain a binary or build the project: the project describes downloading a precompiled binary or building from source. Check availability and compatibility for the operating system where the job will run.
- Prepare a representative HTML input: begin with a page you control and can inspect. Include the layout, fonts, images, and scripts that matter to your real output.
- Select the executable from the required format: choose
wkhtmltopdffor a PDF orwkhtmltoimagefor an image. Use the manual for that executable to confirm the command’s options and syntax. - Run and inspect: the project’s basic PDF example is
wkhtmltopdf http://google.com google.pdf. Substitute your intended source and output, then open the result and check that it contains the expected page content and layout. - Exercise readiness behavior where needed: if a PDF page must signal that it is ready, consult the manual’s
--window-statusoption and make sure the page sets the expected status. Test a slow or incomplete load as well as the normal case. - Record the working configuration: keep the chosen build, platform, input conditions, and command options together so a later deployment can be checked against the same requirements.
The project site links to an auto-generated command-line manual. Because the supplied project materials do not establish a single universal package command or installation path, follow the instructions for the binary and platform you actually select rather than copying an assumed installation command.
Common problems and how to respond
The command runs but the output is wrong or incomplete
A successful invocation alone does not establish that the page was ready or that the installed build supports the intended behavior. Reproduce the problem with a controlled page, inspect the output, verify the executable and its options against its manual, and check whether the package’s Qt build affects the feature you rely on. For a page that needs a readiness signal, verify that the page sets the exact window-status value used by --window-status.
An option shown in documentation does not work on the deployed binary
Some wkhtmltopdf features depend on patched Qt, and distribution packages can differ. Confirm the build you deployed and compare it with the build for which the feature is documented. If the required option is unavailable, do not silently assume equivalent behavior: select a compatible build after platform testing or choose a workflow that meets the requirement another way.

Dynamic page content is absent
First determine whether the page relies on JavaScript or other dynamic behavior and whether it had reached its intended ready state. The project manual’s window-status mechanism is one documented wait approach for wkhtmltopdf when the page can set a status value. If dynamic JavaScript is central and that workflow does not meet the need, the maintainer points toward Puppeteer or a wrapper. Validate whichever alternative you select against your content; no comparative fidelity benchmark is established here.
The input includes user-supplied HTML or JavaScript
Stop and revisit the trust model before rendering it. The maintainer’s warning identifies possible server takeover from untrusted HTML/JavaScript. Do not make the rendering endpoint available for arbitrary supplied markup on the assumption that a successful test with safe input settles the risk.
The expected executable or package is unavailable
The stable-series and repository status facts are dated, and they do not guarantee that a compatible package exists for a particular current platform. Check the project’s current download information and the package source for the target environment. If no build meets the platform and feature requirements, consider the alternatives named by the project for the relevant use case rather than deploying an unverified binary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one wkhtmltopdf project installation guarantee identical results from both utilities?
No. The project groups the executables, but the shared project and Qt WebKit engine do not establish that every option, package, or build behavior is identical. Check each executable’s documentation and test the binary you deploy.
Does the project’s stable-series label mean 0.12.6 is a recent release?
No. The project’s downloads page dates the 0.12.6 stable series to June 11, 2020; the upstream repository was archived in 2023. Treat both as dated status information and verify present-day package and platform compatibility.
