On Windows, pressing Print Screen can capture your display, but the result may be copied to the clipboard or open screen snipping, depending on your settings.
Print Screen versus screenshot
Think of the difference this way: Print Screen is the action, while a screenshot is the captured image. Pressing the key tells Windows to capture screen content. You then need to paste that image into an app or save it as a file, unless you use a shortcut that saves automatically.
Microsoft uses several labels for the key, including PrtSc, PrtScn and PrntScrn. Laptop keyboards may require holding Fn as well.
What happens when you press Print Screen?
There are two Windows behaviors documented by Microsoft, and both can be correct on different computers.

Traditional behavior: copy the entire screen
In the traditional configuration, pressing Print Screen captures the entire display and copies it to the clipboard. Nothing may appear to happen because the image is waiting in memory. Open Paint, Word, an email or another image-capable app and press Ctrl+V to paste it.
Screen-snipping behavior
Windows can be configured so that Print Screen opens the screen-snipping overlay instead. You select a rectangular area, window, full screen or freeform shape, and the capture is copied to the clipboard. This setting explains why instructions that promise identical behavior on every Windows PC can be misleading.
To check the setting, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and find the option that controls whether the Print Screen key opens screen snipping. The wording can vary slightly by Windows release.
Choose the shortcut for the result you need

How to save a screenshot as a file
Save the whole display immediately
- Press Windows + Print Screen. On some laptops, press Windows + Fn + Print Screen.
- The screen may briefly dim.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open, rename, move or share the image like any other file.
If the file is not there, verify that you pressed the Windows key, not just Print Screen, and check whether your Pictures folder is redirected to another location such as OneDrive.

Capture a selected area
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose rectangular snip, freeform snip, window snip or full-screen snip.
- Select the area or window.
- Paste the result with Ctrl+V, or open the notification in Snipping Tool to annotate and save it.
Capture only the active window
- Click the window you want to capture so it is active.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Switch to Paint, a document, chat or email and press Ctrl+V.
- Use that app’s save command to create an image file.
Snipping Tool and Print Screen
Snipping Tool provides rectangular, window, full-screen and freeform captures. After capturing, you can mark up or crop the image and save it. It is useful when you need to remove private information, highlight a button or capture a non-rectangular area.
If Print Screen opens Snipping Tool unexpectedly, that is not a failed key. It indicates the screen-snipping setting is enabled. You can either make the selection there or turn the behavior off under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and return to clipboard-style captures.
Where did my screenshot go?
It is on the clipboard
Print Screen, Alt + Print Screen and Windows + Shift + S commonly place the image on the clipboard. Paste it immediately with Ctrl+V; taking another capture can replace the previous clipboard image.
It was saved automatically
Windows + Print Screen saves to Pictures/Screenshots. Use File Explorer search for recent PNG files if the folder is not obvious.

Nothing visible happened
- Press Ctrl+V in Paint to test whether a clipboard image exists.
- On a laptop, try the Fn key combination.
- Check whether Print Screen is configured to open screen snipping.
- Make sure a remote-desktop, keyboard-remapping or accessibility utility has not reassigned the key.
Windows shortcut decision guide
- Need a complete file: use Windows + Print Screen.
- Need a specific part of the screen: use Windows + Shift + S.
- Need one application window: use Alt + Print Screen.
- Need to paste into an app: use Print Screen and Ctrl+V.
- Need annotation or cropping: open the capture in Snipping Tool.
Print Screen is not a universal screenshot key
The meaning of Print Screen is operating-system dependent. On Chromebook, Google documents the dedicated Screenshot key or Ctrl + Shift + Show windows to open capture controls. On an external keyboard without a Show windows key, Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 as a substitute. Chromebook capture options include the full screen, a partial area and a window; Google also documents Ctrl + Show windows for a full screenshot and Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for a partial one.
Therefore, do not assume a Windows Print Screen instruction applies to ChromeOS. macOS and Linux use their own screenshot shortcuts and settings; the Windows key combinations above are not universal.
Common problems and fixes
The screenshot is black or incomplete
Some protected video, remote-session or hardware-accelerated content may not capture normally. Try capturing the application window instead of the full display, or use the application’s own export feature. A blank result can also occur when the wrong virtual desktop or monitor is active.
The wrong monitor was captured
Full-screen shortcuts can include the display Windows considers active or the combined desktop, depending on configuration. Use Windows + Shift + S and select the exact monitor area when precision matters.

Print Screen opens a menu instead of copying
That is the screen-snipping configuration. Make a selection, or change the setting at Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
The key is missing
Use Windows + Shift + S, the Snipping Tool interface, or an on-screen keyboard. On compact keyboards, Print Screen may share another key and require Fn.
The image looks blurry
Paste the original capture rather than a resized copy, and save in a lossless format such as PNG when text must remain sharp. Scaling a screenshot inside a document or chat service can reduce apparent quality.

FAQ
Does Print Screen automatically create a PNG file?
Not by itself. The single key commonly copies an image to the clipboard. Windows + Print Screen is the shortcut that saves the full-screen capture automatically.
Can I capture just one monitor?
Use Windows + Shift + S and drag over the monitor area, or choose the window option when the target application is in its own window.
Why is my Print Screen key labeled differently?
PrtSc, PrtScn and PrntScrn are alternative labels for the same Windows screenshot command. Laptop manufacturers may place it behind an Fn combination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does pressing Print Screen notify anyone?
No. It creates a local capture or opens the local snipping interface; it does not send the image to another person unless you paste or share it.
Can I undo an accidental screenshot?
If it is only on the clipboard, take or copy something else. If it was saved, delete the image from its folder like any other file.
