wkhtmltopdf vs WeasyPrint: CSS and Page Layout Support

WeasyPrint is the stronger starting point for CSS Paged Media features; wkhtmltopdf offers practical PDF and JavaScript settings but varies by build. Here’s how to choose and validate your renderer.

WeasyPrint is generally the better fit for designed PDFs that rely on CSS Paged Media—including page-margin boxes, named pages, running elements, page selectors, or footnotes. wkhtmltopdf offers useful PDF settings and JavaScript controls, but those controls do not establish broad support for modern paged-media CSS. The right choice depends on the features your document actually uses and the exact versions and builds you deploy.

How their CSS page-layout support differs

WeasyPrint: CSS defines the page design

WeasyPrint’s official API reference documents support for many CSS Paged Media features, including @page, page-margin boxes, named pages, page selectors such as :left, :right, :first, and :blank, running elements for page margins, and footnotes. It also describes page-based counters, page size, bleed, and marks.

That documented support is not a promise of full browser CSS parity. The same reference lists limitations: for example, the start parameter of element() and compact footnote display are unsupported. Multi-column support is limited; constrained column height, spanning columns, and column breaks are unsupported, and pagination and overflow have not been seriously tested. Check the reference for the exact properties your templates require.

For page geometry, WeasyPrint’s use-case guide recommends CSS @page; its example sets A3 landscape with a 3 cm margin. The guide also documents PDF/A and PDF/UA variants, while cautioning that valid output is not guaranteed when the HTML, CSS, or PDF features used exceed specification limitations.

wkhtmltopdf: useful command-line controls, older rendering base

wkhtmltopdf is a command-line HTML-to-PDF tool based on Qt WebKit. Its settings reference documents paper size and dimensions, portrait or landscape orientation, page margins, DPI, page offsets, outlines, headers and footers, and selecting print media. It also exposes JavaScript enablement, a JavaScript load delay, and handling for slow scripts.

These controls can suit an established pipeline or documents whose needs align with wkhtmltopdf’s settings. They should not be mistaken for broad implementation of modern CSS paged media. A Parson AG comparison published in 2023 marked wkhtmltopdf unsupported for numerous tested features, including the general @page rule and the page-size, margin, named-page, page-margin-box, and running-header cases in its table. That is historical evidence about the tools and cases tested in 2023, not a universal score for every build or document.

Does WeasyPrint support CSS Paged Media?

Yes, its official API reference documents the principal features many multi-page designs need: @page, margin boxes, named pages, page selectors, running elements, and footnotes. It also documents limits and unsupported features, so treat support as property-specific rather than assuming that any CSS which works in a browser will work in a PDF.

If a template depends on columns, counters, a particular element() behavior, or specialized PDF output, verify those specific details against the current feature documentation and render representative pages before committing to the tool.

Does wkhtmltopdf support @page and CSS headers or footers?

wkhtmltopdf provides header and footer settings and practical page controls through its command-line settings. That is distinct from styling page margins and running headers through CSS Paged Media. The 2023 Parson AG comparison marked wkhtmltopdf unsupported for the @page and page-margin-box cases it tested. If your design specifically relies on CSS page-margin boxes or running elements, WeasyPrint’s documented feature set is the more direct fit.

Can wkhtmltopdf render JavaScript?

Its settings reference includes controls to enable or disable JavaScript, set a delay before loading, and handle slow scripts. These options can help with pages that need scripts to populate content, but do not guarantee identical behavior to a modern browser or ensure that asynchronous content has finished rendering. Test with the actual scripts, assets, and timing behavior of your input.

Maintenance, security, and deployment risks

Check the exact wkhtmltopdf release and package

The project downloads page reports 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020, as the stable series. That page may not reflect every later release or package state, so check the project’s release history and the binary available for your operating system. The project also notes that some capabilities require patched Qt builds and that distribution packages can use a different engine or behave differently.

Keep untrusted input out of wkhtmltopdf

On the official project status page, maintainer Ashish Kulkarni warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” This is the maintainer’s explicit security warning, not an independently measured exploit report. If users can control HTML or JavaScript, treat the warning as a serious constraint and assess sanitization and isolation before deployment.

The same status page suggests considering WeasyPrint or Prince for controlled report generation, and Puppeteer or another wrapper for sites that use dynamic JavaScript. Those are the maintainer’s recommendations, not guarantees that a particular alternative suits every system.

A fair way to evaluate both renderers

  1. List required CSS features. Include page margins, counters, named pages, page selectors, running headers, footnotes, columns, flex or grid layouts, and any non-Latin or right-to-left content used in production. Check current documentation for each renderer and the version you plan to install.
  2. Fix the inputs and environment. Use representative HTML and CSS, the same fonts and assets, and the exact production operating system, package source, and executable. Note whether content is static or generated by JavaScript and whether screen or print media styles apply.
  3. Compare the actual PDFs. Inspect page breaks, clipping, font and glyph rendering, tables, SVGs, image placement, links, page counters, metadata, and any required accessibility or archival properties. Include right-to-left or other specialist content if your documents use it.
  4. Validate special output requirements. If you need PDF/A or PDF/UA, forms, or downstream validation, check documented support and validate the generated files with the tools used in your workflow.
  5. Repeat after deployment changes. A package or dependency change can alter output, particularly where wkhtmltopdf build and Qt patch state vary. Keep the executable and runtime dependencies pinned or otherwise recorded, and rerun the representative corpus when they change.

No cited source establishes a universal speed or visual-fidelity winner for arbitrary documents. A controlled comparison using your templates and intended production configuration is necessary to answer those questions for your project.

ScreenshotNeo for website screenshots—not a PDF renderer comparison

If your actual task is capturing a website as an image or PDF rather than building a CSS-driven report pipeline, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement claim for either renderer’s CSS paged-media capabilities. It can capture PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its consent-banner, popup, and chat-widget cleanup can be turned off by step. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome reported in response headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents.
