Start with Playwright when a page depends on contemporary JavaScript, when you need to automate browser interactions, or when you want to test across Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit. Its Page API provides both PDF and screenshot operations. Keep the Playwright package and its browser installation deliberately aligned: supported browser versions update with Playwright releases.

For dynamic pages, explicitly wait for the page state your output requires. A browser automation tool does not by itself guarantee that an application has finished rendering the content you care about; validate readiness and resulting output against representative pages.
Keep wkhtmltopdf for stable, controlled conversion
wkhtmltopdf can remain a reasonable choice when you already have stable templates, the produced documents meet your requirements, and the exact binary and Qt build work in your deployment environment. Verify fonts, CSS, JavaScript behavior, and pagination before relying on it for new templates or changing environments. Playwright’s PDF output uses print media, so inspect print-specific styles as well as screen layout. wkhtmltopdf’s JavaScript switches offer control over script execution and waiting, but they do not establish compatibility with every modern JavaScript framework. Do not render untrusted HTML with wkhtmltopdf

- User-supplied markup is being converted: do not feed untrusted HTML to wkhtmltopdf; sanitize it and isolate the rendering process.
