wkhtmltoimage vs. Headless Chrome: Which Captures Modern Websites Better?

Chrome Headless is generally the better fit for interactive sites and Chrome-aligned captures; wkhtmltoimage can remain practical for simpler pages and stable existing workflows.

For modern, interactive websites, Chrome Headless is usually the stronger starting point—especially when you need Chrome-aligned rendering or must interact with the page before capture. wkhtmltoimage can still suit simpler pages and established workflows that already produce acceptable results. That is a capability-based recommendation, not a head-to-head benchmark: the right choice depends on your pages, capture requirements, and deployment environment.

What are wkhtmltoimage and Chrome Headless?

wkhtmltoimage is an open-source command-line tool in the wkhtmltopdf project. Its project documentation says it renders HTML into image formats using the Qt WebKit rendering engine and can run without a display service. The project overview identifies Qt WebKit specifically; Qt WebEngine is a different technology, built on Chromium, and is not the engine used by wkhtmltoimage.

Chrome Headless runs Chrome without displaying its normal user interface. Chrome for Developers says current Headless mode is unified with headful Chrome. The older, separate Headless implementation is available as the standalone chrome-headless-shell binary beginning with Chrome 132.0.6793.0. These distinctions matter when you compare output or configure an installation: “Headless Chrome” may refer to the current unified mode or the older shell. See Chrome Headless mode documentation.

Puppeteer is not another rendering engine. It is a JavaScript automation library for Chrome and Firefox; it can drive a browser, interact with pages, intercept network traffic, and capture screenshots or PDFs. See Chrome for Developers’ Puppeteer documentation.

How do they differ for modern websites?

Decision point wkhtmltoimage Chrome Headless / Puppeteer
Rendering engine Qt WebKit, according to the project documentation. Current Headless mode uses Chrome’s unified browser implementation.
Modern Chrome fidelity Use when its output meets your needs; it is a separate rendering stack. More suitable when the target is Chrome-like rendering.
Page interaction The project overview establishes command-line rendering but does not detail interaction APIs. Puppeteer documents querying elements, clicking, typing, network interception, and screenshots.
Capture timing Use switches documented for the installed wkhtmltoimage version. Chrome’s command-line reference documents timeout and virtual-time controls; Puppeteer supplies higher-level automation.
Good fit A stable existing workflow or simpler pages whose rendered result is acceptable. Interactive pages, explicit browser automation, or Chrome-aligned output.

The table describes documented capabilities and practical fit, not measured image quality or speed. There is no universal winner for every page and environment.

Which should you choose?

Choose Chrome Headless when the page depends on interaction

Use Chrome automation when capture depends on clicking a control, waiting for a particular element, entering text, or handling network activity. A screenshot reflects the page state at capture time, so a page that has not finished rendering—or has not reached the state you need—can produce an incomplete image. Puppeteer’s automation controls are useful when readiness involves more than a fixed delay.

  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Keep wkhtmltoimage when the existing result is good enough

If your pages are simple, your current output meets the required fidelity, and wkhtmltoimage is already integrated into a dependable workflow, replacing it may add migration work without solving a real problem. Check representative pages before changing systems rather than assuming every page will fail or benefit.

Do not decide based on unsupported performance claims

The official documentation reviewed here does not establish a controlled comparison of screenshot speed, pixel accuracy, compatibility across page types, or current wkhtmltoimage release cadence. Do not treat either tool as categorically faster or assume that every modern CSS feature fails in wkhtmltoimage.

How to compare them on your own pages

This is a recommended evaluation, not a published benchmark. Use the same target pages, viewport, operating environment, and intended capture state for both tools.

  1. Pick representative pages. Include a simple static page and pages with the JavaScript, delayed content, fonts, images, and interactions your real workflow depends on.
  2. Set the same capture conditions. Match viewport dimensions and device scale where possible, and use the same URL and authentication or page state.
  3. Control readiness. Wait for the content you actually need, not just an arbitrary delay. For Chrome, the command-line documentation includes --timeout and a virtual-time budget for time-dependent scripts; Puppeteer can wait for page conditions through automation. See the Chrome Headless command-line reference.
  4. Inspect meaningful differences. Compare layout, text wrapping, font appearance, loaded images, delayed content, and whether the capture shows the intended final state.
  5. Repeat captures. Re-run pages that depend on timing or network responses. A single image may reflect a transient load rather than a consistent workflow.
  6. Choose by requirements. Prefer the tool that reliably meets your fidelity and interaction needs in your deployment environment, accounting for migration effort.

Capture timing and deployment considerations

Wait for the right page state

A screenshot is only as current as the page at capture time. Chrome’s command-line options include a maximum wait via --timeout and virtual-time controls for time-dependent scripts. Those are different controls: a maximum timeout limits waiting, while virtual time addresses script timing. Consult the official command-line reference for the precise behavior and syntax for your Chrome version. If the page requires a specific action or element, use browser automation rather than relying only on elapsed time.

Account for the environment

Run your comparison in the environment where captures will be produced. Browser versions, installed fonts, network access, and page state can affect what is available to render. The supplied official documentation does not provide a universal deployment or resource-cost comparison, so measure those factors in your own setup before migrating.

Troubleshooting common capture problems

  • The screenshot is blank or mostly empty: the page may not have reached its rendered state before capture. Add an explicit readiness condition or suitable wait, then check whether required page resources loaded.
  • Content is missing even though the page loaded: determine whether it appears only after scrolling, interaction, or a delayed request. Reproduce that page state before capturing; a basic command-line render may not perform the interaction your page requires.
  • The two images differ: first confirm that viewport, environment, fonts, and capture timing match. Different rendering lineages can produce differences; inspect whether they matter to your output instead of assuming one image is universally correct.
  • Chrome stops waiting before the page is ready: review the configured maximum timeout and the readiness condition. A larger timeout alone may not help if the capture is waiting for the wrong signal.
  • A wkhtmltoimage option behaves unexpectedly: check the manual for the version actually installed. The project overview does not specify every command-line switch or guarantee identical behavior across versions.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call API returns a screenshot or PDF, and its parameter names also work with those used by other screenshot APIs, which can make switching easier. Cookie banners are accepted or removed before the shot, along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools. It offers 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details.
