Set the rendering screen size
Use --width for the screen width and --height for the screen height. These options affect the dimensions used to render the page; they do not, by themselves, guarantee that every page will fit inside an exact-size output bitmap.
wkhtmltoimage --width 1200 --disable-smart-width --height 800 input.html output.pngThis asks for a 1200-pixel-wide render with smart width disabled and a screen height of 800. The Ubuntu Noble wkhtmltoimage(1) manpage for packaged version 0.12.6-2build2 describes width as a guideline and says to use --disable-smart-width to make it strict: Ubuntu Noble wkhtmltoimage manpage.
Width: default behavior and strict width
Without --disable-smart-width, the requested width may not be the final width used if page content requires more room. Debian’s documentation for version 0.12.6-2 describes --enable-smart-width as extending the width to fit unbreakable content, and --disable-smart-width as using the specified width even when it is not large enough for that content: Debian wkhtmltoimage implementation documentation.

Use smart width when accommodating unbreakable content matters more than keeping a fixed width. Disable it when the render width must remain at the requested value; check the resulting image because content can overflow or fail to fit.
Height: screen height, not a crop boundary
--height sets the screen height. If omitted, the manpage says it is calculated from page content. Do not assume a chosen screen height also crops the resulting image to that height; use crop dimensions when you need a bounded captured rectangle.

Crop a rectangle separately from screen dimensions
The crop options define the captured area: --crop-x and --crop-y set its origin, while --crop-w and --crop-h set its width and height. For example, to request a crop starting at the top-left with dimensions 1200 by 800:
wkhtmltoimage --width 1200 --disable-smart-width --crop-x 0 --crop-y 0 --crop-w 1200 --crop-h 800 input.html output.pngThis combines render-width settings with a crop rectangle; it is not a promise that arbitrary content will fit those bounds. Does wkhtmltoimage have a –viewport-size option?
Do not substitute --viewport-size for --width and --height based on the references checked here. The official project usage file cited for that option documents it for wkhtmltopdf; the cited wkhtmltoimage manpage lists screen width and height instead: wkhtmltopdf usage documentation.
Confirm the options supported by your installed executable with wkhtmltoimage --help or wkhtmltoimage --extended-help. Exact behavior can vary across distributions and builds; the references above cover Ubuntu Noble’s 0.12.6-2build2 package and Debian’s 0.12.6-2 implementation.

Choose the right option for the result you need

Troubleshoot unexpected dimensions
- The output is wider than
--width. Smart width may be extending the render to accommodate unbreakable content. Try--disable-smart-widthand inspect whether content overflows or is clipped. - The image height does not match
--height. Treat--heightas a screen dimension, not automatically as a crop bound. Set crop dimensions when the target is a particular captured rectangle. - The command rejects an option. Check
wkhtmltoimage --helpor--extended-helpfor the installed build; do not infer image-command support fromwkhtmltopdfdocumentation. - The page layout differs from expectations. Verify the actual image for the target HTML and build. The documented controls do not promise that arbitrary page content, overflow, or layout will conform exactly to the requested dimensions.
