Spoilers for “The Whispering Hillock,” “Ladies of the Wood,” and the Bloody Baron storyline. There is no clean or objectively best choice. Freeing the spirit during the main quest sequence saves the Crookback Bog orphans but destroys Downwarren, while Anna dies and the Bloody Baron hangs himself. Killing the spirit protects Downwarren and leaves Anna alive but mentally devastated; the Crones keep the children, and the Baron takes Anna away to seek help. A timing-dependent branch changes some of those outcomes, but it does not save everyone.
What each choice means for the children, Downwarren, Anna, and the Baron
The familiar main-quest branch makes you choose which tragedy to accept. The outcomes below are reported in quest and ending guides, rather than in first-party developer documentation.

| Choice and timing | Crookback Bog orphans | Downwarren | Anna | Bloody Baron |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kill the spirit, by fighting or tricking it | The Crones keep the children. | Protected from the spirit. | Survives, but is mentally devastated after losing the children. | Takes Anna away to seek a cure. |
| Free the spirit during the main quest sequence | Saved; later quest guides report that they appear in Novigrad. | Massacred by the spirit. | Turned into a water hag; she dies when Geralt lifts the curse. | Hangs himself. |
| Free the spirit before speaking to Downwarren’s ealdorman | Not rescued through the later arrangement. | Attacked by the spirit. | Not transformed into a water hag; survives mentally devastated. | Lives and takes Anna away to seek help. |
The early-free branch is a sequence exception, not a way to save both the children and Anna. The village is still attacked, and the children are not rescued through the familiar later arrangement. The branches and consequences are summarized in Witcher Wiki’s quest guide, Witcher.tools’ walkthrough, and WitcherDB’s “Ladies of the Wood” decision guide.

#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
- If saving the orphans matters most: free the spirit during the main quest sequence. This saves the children, at the cost of Downwarren’s villagers and the tragic Anna and Baron outcome.
- If protecting Downwarren and keeping Anna alive matters most: kill the spirit. The cost is that the Crones keep the children and Anna is left mentally devastated.
- If you are considering the early-free branch: it avoids Anna’s transformation and the Baron’s suicide, but does not rescue the children through the later arrangement and does not spare Downwarren.
These are values-based priorities, not a ranking the story settles for you. A July 18, 2026 PC Gamer editorial on difficult choices in PC games likewise summarizes the familiar tradeoff as a stark one; it is not developer documentation.

Walkthroughs describe investigating the Whispering Hillock with Witcher Senses, gathering the spirit’s bones and a raven’s feather, and bringing a black mare into the cave. From there, Geralt can free the spirit, trick it and destroy it, or fight it. Trickery and direct combat both count as killing the spirit and lead to the kill-route outcomes.

- robustness
The choice is tied to “Ladies of the Wood” and “Return to Crookback Bog.” The point at which you speak with Downwarren’s ealdorman matters: freeing the spirit before that conversation leads to the distinct early-free branch in the table, rather than the familiar main-quest outcome. Quest methods and routes are described in Gamer Guides’ Whispering Hillock guide and the quest guides linked above.
