Buy a wireless network adapter if your computer has no Wi-Fi, or its existing wireless hardware lacks a band or capability you need. First identify the problem: an adapter can add or replace Wi-Fi hardware, but it cannot by itself fix poor router placement, walls, distance, a driver issue, or a slow internet connection.
When an adapter is likely to help
A USB Wi-Fi adapter is an external wireless network card that plugs into a computer. It can add Wi-Fi without opening a desktop case, or replace built-in wireless hardware that does not support the band you want. A PCIe Wi-Fi adapter is an internal option for a desktop with a compatible expansion slot.

Before buying, determine whether the limitation is actually the computer’s wireless hardware. If Wi-Fi works but reception is weak, the cause may instead be distance, walls, router placement, or interference. If the connection is slow across devices, adding a computer adapter may not address the underlying network or service constraint.

Match the adapter to your router and Wi-Fi band
Check which bands your router supports and compare that with the adapter’s specifications. A 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz adapter may be sufficient if your router and use case do not call for 6 GHz. Consider the rated performance on the band you will actually use, along with conditions in the room.
Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band, but that capability requires support from the adapter, router, operating system, and drivers. The 6 GHz band can offer more open channels and less interference, but it has shorter range and weaker wall penetration than 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz. Results depend on the environment and router placement.

Check operating-system and driver support
Compatibility is a chain: the adapter needs a driver for your operating system, the computer needs the right port or expansion slot, and the router needs to support the band and features you intend to use. Verify the exact adapter documentation rather than relying on a broad compatibility label.
- Windows: Microsoft says Windows 11 supports Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7, and WPA3, while noting that performance varies by manufacturer and device capability. This platform-level support does not mean every adapter supports every feature. Check the Microsoft Windows Wi-Fi guidance and the adapter’s own documentation.
- Linux: Look up the exact adapter or chipset in the relevant driver’s hardware-support information. A generic “Linux compatible” claim may not establish support for your specific device.
Read advertised speed tiers carefully

Compare the stated rate for the band your router and computer will use, and treat performance as dependent on the adapter, router, drivers, distance, obstacles, and network conditions.
