A wireless home network connects devices in your home over radio signals, usually through Wi-Fi. A router lets devices communicate on that local network and commonly shares an internet connection supplied by a separate modem or an internet-provider gateway. Wi-Fi is the wireless connection; it is not the internet service itself.
What is a wireless home network?
It is the group of devices in a home connected to one another over a local network using Wi-Fi. A local area network, or LAN, covers a limited area; a home network is a familiar example. Phones, computers, televisions, cameras, voice assistants, and connected appliances may all use the same home network. Cloudflare explains LANs, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes devices commonly connected to home Wi-Fi.

How does home Wi-Fi work?
Wi-Fi carries data between compatible devices and the wireless router using radio signals. Devices on the same local network can communicate with one another. When they need to reach websites or other online services, the router commonly forwards their traffic through an internet connection provided by the household’s internet service provider (ISP). Cloudflare’s router explanation describes the router’s role in connecting devices and forwarding traffic.
Wi-Fi is not the same as internet service
Wi-Fi describes how a device connects wirelessly to a network. Internet service is the connection from the home to the wider internet. A Wi-Fi network can still connect devices locally even if the internet service is unavailable, though online services will not be reachable through that connection. The FTC’s consumer guidance calls Wi-Fi a home’s wireless internet connection, but the wireless link and the ISP connection are distinct parts of the setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Router, modem, and gateway
The router manages the home network and connects devices, commonly over Wi-Fi. A modem or other ISP equipment provides the connection to the provider’s network. Some homes have separate router and modem devices; an ISP gateway may combine both functions in one box. The labels can differ by provider and model, but the functions remain distinct. See Cloudflare’s overview of routers.
Why secure a wireless home network?
Because Wi-Fi uses radio signals, its coverage can extend beyond the rooms where you intend to use it. If the network is not secured, someone nearby could potentially try to connect. The FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, setting unique Wi-Fi and administrator passwords, and keeping router software current. Its home Wi-Fi security guide also recommends considering a guest network and turning off remote management, WPS, and UPnP when those features are not needed. Router menus vary, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
Guest network and household devices
A guest network gives visitors a way to connect without sharing the primary Wi-Fi password and can help separate guest devices from the household’s main network. Check the router’s instructions to see how guest access works on that model.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
What to check when choosing a router
If you are setting up or replacing a router, check whether it meets your ISP’s equipment requirements, supports WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, and receives software updates from its manufacturer. Also consider whether one router can cover the areas where you need Wi-Fi; an additional access point or mesh system may be relevant if coverage is inadequate, but not every home needs one. These are practical selection criteria, not a ranking of particular products.
