Wireless Charging Slow With a Case? How to Find the Cause

A case can slow or stop wireless charging, but alignment, charger compatibility and the power adapter can matter too. Here’s a practical way to identify the cause.

Yes. A phone case can slow or stop wireless charging when it is too thick, contains metal or other obstructions, or prevents the phone from sitting in the right position. But a case is only one possible cause: the phone, charger, power adapter and alignment all matter. The quickest check is to compare charging with and without the case using the same setup.

How a case can affect wireless charging

Wireless charging depends on the phone and charger coils being able to transfer power across a small gap. A case adds distance, and its materials or features can interfere with charging or make correct positioning harder. Apple advises iPhone users whose phones charge slowly or not at all to try removing a thick, metal or battery case. Samsung likewise identifies case thickness and third-party cover compatibility as troubleshooting factors.

There is no universal case-thickness limit or fixed speed penalty that applies to every phone and charger. Samsung says that, with Samsung wireless chargers, a non-Samsung case should be no thicker than 5 mm. That is Samsung’s guidance for its charger setup, not a general limit for all wireless charging combinations. Apple does not give a universal millimeter limit.

Metal, cards and other add-ons

Metal cases, magnetic mounts and objects placed between the phone and charger may interfere with charging. Apple warns against magnetic mounts, magnetic cases and other objects between an iPhone and its charger; it also notes that charging can damage magnetic strips or RFID chips. Samsung advises removing cards, RFID cards and conductive materials from between the phone and charger. Wallet pockets, grips and attachments are worth checking if they sit against the charging surface.

Fit and alignment

A case that shifts the phone or changes how it rests on a pad or stand can leave the charging coils poorly aligned. Samsung says improper alignment can lead to slow or interrupted charging, or overheating. Apple recommends centering the iPhone or following the charger maker’s placement instructions; it says MagSafe provides optimal magnetic alignment for supported iPhones.

Check whether your case is the problem

  1. Keep the setup constant. Use the same phone, wireless charger and power adapter for both checks. Keep room conditions and phone placement as consistent as possible.
  2. Clear the charging surface. Remove cards, metal accessories, grips and other objects from between the phone and charger.
  3. Charge once with the case on. Center the phone or position it as the charger manufacturer recommends, then note whether charging starts and continues normally.
  4. Repeat without the case. Use the same placement and accessories. If charging improves, the case’s thickness, materials, fit or compatibility may be contributing.
  5. If nothing changes, check the rest of the setup. Confirm that the phone and charger support a compatible wireless-charging standard, that the power adapter is appropriate for the charger, and that the phone is positioned correctly. Consult the phone and charger makers’ troubleshooting instructions if charging remains slow or stops.

This is a practical comparison, not a precise measurement of case-related speed loss. A single result cannot isolate every variable, and the cited guidance does not quantify how many minutes or what percentage of charging speed a particular case costs.

Choose a case that suits your phone and charger

Check the exact phone model and the charger’s documentation rather than relying on a case label alone. Compare candidate cases on these points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Exact model fit: A case must be made for your phone model and leave its charging area appropriately positioned.
  • Compatibility: Look for explicit Qi or Qi2 compatibility, or confirmation from the phone or charger manufacturer for your combination.
  • Thickness and added features: A thick case, battery case or bulky attachment may be less suitable than a simpler cover.
  • Materials and attachments: Check for metal, magnets, wallet cards, grips or other items that could interfere or sit between the phone and charger.
  • Alignment: Make sure the case does not prevent the phone from resting in the charger’s intended position.

Certification is useful evidence of compatibility, but it does not remove the need to check the actual phone, case and charger combination. The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) says Qi-certified products are tested for safety and interoperability. Its certified-products database includes a Samsung Galaxy S25 Clear Magnet Case as one example of a listed mobile phone cover; that listing is not a blanket endorsement or a guarantee for other phones and chargers. WPC explains its database at its certified-products page.

What Qi and Qi2 power figures do—and do not—tell you

Wireless charging speed depends on the capabilities of the specific phone, charger and power adapter, as well as the setup. Standard power figures should not be mistaken for a guaranteed speed through every case.

  • Qi2: WPC says Qi2 supports 15 W charging for devices certified for it. Qi2 uses magnetic attachment to align devices and chargers. WPC describes this alignment as a way to improve energy efficiency, charging speed and usability.
  • Qi2 25W: WPC says Qi2 25W launched in July 2025 and supports up to 25 W. The same WPC page says it can charge a smartphone battery from 0 to 50% in about 30 minutes. That is a standards-body statement, not a promise for a specific phone, case, charger or charging session.
  • iPhone and Qi: Apple says iPhone 8 or later supports Qi-certified charging accessories and gives up to 7.5 W for many Qi chargers with the latest iOS. That is Apple guidance for the stated iPhone and accessory context, not a universal limit for Qi charging.

Check current compatibility and certification details with the WPC’s Qi wireless-charging overview, Apple’s iPhone wireless-charging instructions, and Samsung’s wireless-charging troubleshooting guidance. These are official organization and manufacturer statements, not controlled comparisons of every product combination.

If removing the case does not help

Look beyond the cover. A charger that is not compatible with the phone, an unsuitable power adapter, or poor placement can cause slow or interrupted charging even with no case. Check the phone and charger documentation for the supported standard and required adapter, clear the charging surface, and follow the charger’s placement instructions. Samsung also notes that poor alignment may cause overheating; if that happens, reposition the phone and follow the maker’s safety guidance.
