WireGuard routes the inner traffic; udp2raw carries WireGuard’s outer UDP packets using a separate mode such as FakeTCP. The two routing layers must work together, and packet size may need adjustment if the tunnel stalls.
How the two tunneling layers fit together
WireGuard does not have a TCP transport mode. The WireGuard project explains that transforming UDP into TCP-like traffic belongs in an upper obfuscation layer and names udp2raw as an example: WireGuard’s known limitations.

The packet path has two distinct layers:
- An application sends IP traffic to a destination. WireGuard’s cryptokey routing selects a peer based on the destination prefix.
- WireGuard encrypts and encapsulates that traffic in UDP packets.
- The local udp2raw client receives those UDP packets and transports them to the remote udp2raw server using a selected raw mode.
- The server-side udp2raw process forwards the packets to the WireGuard UDP listener.
In this arrangement, the client’s WireGuard peer endpoint points to the local udp2raw UDP listener, while the udp2raw client targets the remote udp2raw server. The server-side process forwards to the WireGuard listener. Choose which destinations use WireGuard
Split tunneling controls the inner destinations: include only the remote networks you intend to reach through the WireGuard peer. WireGuard’s AllowedIPs participates in cryptokey routing: destination addresses select a peer for sending, and received packet source addresses are checked against the peer’s allowed ranges. For a split tunnel, use the specific destination prefixes required by your setup. AllowedIPs = 0.0.0.0/0 represents the all-IPv4 prefix, not a selected-prefix split tunnel. Exact configuration syntax and whether routes are installed automatically depend on the operating system and WireGuard client tooling.
Keep the udp2raw server outside the WireGuard route
The remote udp2raw server’s IP address is part of the outer transport path. It must remain reachable through the physical network’s ordinary default route, rather than being captured by WireGuard. If a full-tunnel route or broad policy sends udp2raw’s own packets into the tunnel they are meant to carry, the connection can loop or stop working.

On Linux, the udp2raw wiki documents a route-exception pattern that directs the server IP through the default gateway. Substitute the actual server address, gateway, and interface context from your system; do not copy a placeholder command literally. See the udp2raw wiki.
Select a udp2raw mode with realistic expectations
The project documents FakeTCP, UDP, and ICMP raw modes. The appropriate choice depends on which traffic patterns the network permits, whether both ends are configured compatibly, and what firewall and privilege requirements apply. The available documentation does not establish one mode as universally best.

The udp2raw sample commands require root privileges. Firewall behavior and rule-management details are platform-specific, so review the project README and your system’s firewall configuration before running commands. FakeTCP is not a guarantee of bypassing network blocks or inspection.

Check packet size and MTU on both ends if the tunnel starts but larger transfers stall or udp2raw reports a “Huge packet” warning. The project warns that its raw-socket path does not support IP fragmentation, so packets exceeding the path MTU may fail. There is no universally supported MTU value in the project guidance; test cautiously rather than assuming a fixed number. For some “Huge packet” warnings involving GRO, the project suggests trying --fix-gro. See the udp2raw wiki.
