Choose a battery-powered model if you need flexible placement or want to avoid connecting doorbell-system wires—and are willing to recharge it. Either way, connected video features still depend on Wi-Fi, and compatibility varies by model.
What “wired” and “wireless” mean
For this choice, “wired” usually means the doorbell draws power from the home’s low-voltage doorbell wiring. “Wireless” generally means it can run on its own battery without those wires. It does not mean the doorbell is independent of a network: app setup and connected video features still require Wi-Fi and internet access.

Some battery-powered models can also connect to compatible doorbell wires for gradual or continuous charging. That does not guarantee every existing system will keep a battery fully charged; check the selected model’s wiring requirements.
Compare the trade-offs
| Factor | Wired | Battery-powered |
|---|---|---|
| Power | Uses compatible doorbell wiring and transformer; routine battery charging is generally avoided when installation is correct. | Can run without doorbell-system wires, but requires periodic charging in wire-free use. |
| Placement | Most straightforward at an existing wired location, subject to wiring and chime compatibility. | More flexible where suitable doorbell wiring is absent or a new location is preferred. |
| Installation | Involves wiring work and safely isolating power. Transformer changes or professional help may be needed. | A wire-free installation avoids connecting doorbell-system wires, but still requires mounting, app setup, Wi-Fi, and charging. |
| Indoor chime | Depends on the model, transformer, wiring, and chime; a required chime connector may be part of installation. | For the cited Google Nest battery setup, a wire-free installation cannot use the home’s chime; plan another compatible visitor-notification method. |
| Network | Wi-Fi and internet remain relevant for setup and connected video. | Wi-Fi and internet remain relevant for setup and connected video. |
When a wired doorbell makes more sense
- You already have doorbell wires and can confirm they meet the chosen model’s power requirements.
- You want to avoid taking the doorbell down or otherwise managing periodic battery charging.
- You have checked that the existing indoor chime and transformer are compatible, or are prepared to address those requirements.
Wired does not mean installation is automatically a simple swap. Manufacturers specify voltage and power requirements by model, and some installations may need a transformer change or chime connector. Follow the selected model’s current installation guide.

When a battery-powered doorbell makes more sense
- The preferred mounting location has no suitable doorbell wiring.
- You want to avoid working with existing doorbell-system wires.
- Periodic charging is an acceptable trade-off for easier placement.
Battery charging can also be affected by temperature. Google says the battery in its cited Nest model cannot be charged below 0°C (32°F); check the operating and charging conditions for the exact doorbell you are considering.
Some battery models can be connected to compatible doorbell wires to charge gradually. Treat that as a model-specific option, not a promise that any existing wiring will keep the battery full.

Check compatibility before choosing
Verify transformer voltage and power
Voltage alone does not establish compatibility; the model’s power requirements matter too. As examples limited to Google Nest products, Google lists 8–24 V AC for the Nest Doorbell (battery), 16–24 V AC for the original wired model in North America and 12–24 V AC globally, and 16–24 V AC in North America for the wired second- and third-generation models. These are Google product requirements, not universal ranges for all doorbells. Use the current requirements for your exact model and region. Google Nest’s compatibility guidance explains the model-specific checks.

Check how the indoor chime will work
Google says its wired Nest models require the supplied chime connector; the connector supports constant power and protects the chime. Its battery model does not require that connector. In the cited Google setup, a battery-powered chime without doorbell wires will not work, and a wire-free battery installation cannot use the home’s chime. Google’s installation guidance suggests a compatible smart speaker or display for visitor announcements in that wire-free setup. Other manufacturers and models may handle chimes differently.

Confirm network conditions
For its Nest cameras and doorbells, Google lists a minimum upload speed of 2 Mbps per device. This is Google’s stated minimum, not a benchmark for every brand. A weak Wi-Fi connection can cause connection problems or delay video, regardless of whether the doorbell is wired or battery-powered. Google’s installation guidance covers setup and network requirements.

For a wired installation, Google instructs users to switch off doorbell power at the breaker or fuse box and test that the correct circuit is off before disconnecting existing hardware. Do not disconnect or handle wiring while it is live. If you cannot identify the correct circuit, are unsure about the wiring, or may need transformer work, consult a qualified installer. Google says a licensed electrician must install a new transformer in Europe and Australia for the wired models covered by its guidance; check the current regional instructions and local electrical rules.
For a battery doorbell installed wire-free, you avoid connecting the home’s doorbell wiring, but still need to mount the device, complete app setup, connect it to Wi-Fi, and keep its battery charged. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model.

Quick Recap
Make the decision in this order
- Check the location. If it has no suitable doorbell wiring, focus on battery-powered models or the installation work needed to add compatible wiring.
- Check the exact model’s power requirements. Compare its voltage and power specifications with the transformer and wiring; do not rely on voltage alone.
- Check the chime. Confirm whether the existing chime works with the model and whether a connector or another notification method is required.
- Consider charging and climate. Decide whether periodic charging is acceptable, and check the model’s charging-temperature limits.
- Check Wi-Fi and installation comfort. Both power types rely on network access for connected features; choose professional help if wiring or transformer work is uncertain.
What not to assume
- “Wireless” does not mean offline: connected video features still need Wi-Fi and app setup.
- Existing wires do not guarantee compatibility; voltage, power, and chime requirements differ by model.
- Connecting a battery model to wires does not establish that the battery will stay fully charged.
- Battery life and performance cannot be reduced to one reliable figure across models and conditions. Consult the selected device’s current specifications rather than assuming a universal runtime.
