The best wired over-ear headphones depend on where you listen and what matters most: an open, spacious sound, less sound leakage, a comfortable fit, or a cable you can replace. These five picks cover distinct situations rather than claiming one model suits everyone.

1. Sennheiser HD 560S: open-back, neutral-oriented listening
The HD 560S is a strong fit for a quiet room if you want a generally flat sound rather than emphasized bass. RTINGS describes it as comfortable for long sessions, with a spacious open-back presentation. It also notes a limitation in low bass, which may matter if you want weightier impact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOpen-back headphones let sound escape and allow more outside sound in. That makes the HD 560S a poor choice around people who need quiet or when recording near an open microphone. See RTINGS’ Sennheiser HD 560S review.

- Lightweight 1.38 in neodymium dynamic drivers deliver a punchy, rhythmic response to even the most demanding tracks. Driver Unit: Dome type.Specific uses for product : Travel
- The swiveling earcup design allows easy storage when you’re not using them, and enhances portability when you’re traveling
- Cushioned earpads for total comfort and enfolding closed-back design seals in sound
- The wide frequency range—spanning 12 Hz to 22 kHz—delivers deep bass, rich midrange, and soaring highs
- Plug: L-shaped stereo mini plug 3.5mm. Impedance (Ohm) 24 ohm (1KHz). Cord Length 3.94 ft
2. Philips SHP9500: a budget-oriented open-back option
The SHP9500 offers a broad, spacious presentation and a fit that RTINGS describes as comfortable over longer sessions. Its lower-cost positioning makes it a useful open-back alternative to consider for home listening.
It has less low-end presence than some listeners may want, and its fit is less stable than the HD 560S. The treble can also become piercing for some people. Like other open-back headphones, it leaks sound, so it is not a good match for a quiet shared space or nearby recording microphone. Explore RTINGS’ wired headphone guide.
3. Sennheiser HD 480 PRO: closed-back for recording contexts
Choose the HD 480 PRO when limiting leakage is more important than the open, airy presentation of an open-back model. RTINGS identifies it as a closed-back option that leaks less than open-back headphones and may suit recording. Its sound follows the review’s target curve fairly closely, with some extra bass thump.

Closed-back describes the acoustic design, not electronic noise cancellation. The HD 480 PRO does not become an active noise-cancelling headphone simply because it reduces leakage. Read RTINGS’ closed-back headphone comparisons.
4. Sennheiser HD 490 PRO: balanced sound for production and listening
The HD 490 PRO is a versatile choice for long listening sessions or music production. RTINGS describes balanced mids and treble, an appealing low end, and a light, comfortable fit. It is worth considering if you want an even presentation without choosing the more neutral-oriented HD 560S.
The plastic yokes feel less durable than the rest of the build, according to RTINGS. The review also says the headphone does not create the immersive presentation of more expensive picks. See RTINGS’ wired headphone recommendations.

5. Audio-Technica ATH-M50x: closed-back versatility and a detachable cable
The ATH-M50x is a closed-back option for listeners who want reduced leakage and some passive isolation. Its detachable cable is a practical serviceability advantage: the cable can be replaced separately if it is damaged. RTINGS describes it as suited to audiophiles and audio professionals; whether its sound and fit work for you is still a personal judgment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Compared with open-back choices such as the HD 560S, a closed-back design is more useful when keeping sound in or reducing outside sound matters. It is not active noise cancellation. Read RTINGS’ Audio-Technica ATH-M50x review.
Open-back or closed-back headphones?
Choose open-back for a quiet listening room
Open-back construction can create a spacious presentation, but sound travels both ways: other people may hear your audio, and room noise can reach you. The HD 560S and SHP9500 are therefore better suited to quieter settings than to shared offices or recording environments where microphone bleed is a concern.

- Advanced build quality and engineering; Designed for studio tracking and mixing
- 40 mm drivers with rare earth magnets and copper clad aluminum wire voice coils
- Tuned for enhanced low frequency performance
- Circumaural design contours around the ears for excellent sound isolation in loud environments
- Convenient single side cable exit
Choose closed-back when leakage matters
Closed-back models such as the HD 480 PRO and ATH-M50x reduce leakage compared with open-back designs and provide some passive isolation. The degree of isolation depends on fit and environment; do not treat it as a substitute for active noise cancellation.

Match the sound to your preference
“Neutral” is not synonymous with universally enjoyable. The HD 560S is described as generally flat but limited in low bass; the SHP9500 also has less low end and may have piercing treble. If possible, try the fit and sound, or choose a seller with a clear return policy.

The ATH-M50x has a detachable cable. By contrast, RTINGS notes that the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO cable is not detachable, which can make cable damage a more consequential repair. The DT 770 PRO is not one of the five picks above, but its variants illustrate why cable design is worth checking before purchase. Read RTINGS’ DT 770 PRO review.

Check the exact model variant and source
Impedance advice varies by DT 770 PRO variant: RTINGS reports 32 ohms for mobile devices, 80 ohms for general studio use, and 250 ohms for professional equipment with additional amplification. This guidance applies to those DT 770 PRO versions, not to every wired headphone. Verify the exact variant and your source’s requirements before buying.
How to choose among these five
- For neutral-oriented listening in a quiet room: start with the Sennheiser HD 560S.
- For a budget-oriented open-back option: consider the Philips SHP9500, bearing in mind its fit and treble tradeoffs.
- For recording where less leakage is useful: consider the closed-back Sennheiser HD 480 PRO.
- For balanced sound during production or longer sessions: consider the Sennheiser HD 490 PRO.
- For a closed-back option with a detachable cable: consider the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x.
