For modern gaming mice, wired is not automatically faster. Many wireless mice using a dedicated USB receiver can match or exceed wired-only models in sensor-latency tests. For gaming, compare wired with the mouse’s 2.4 GHz USB receiver mode—not Bluetooth—and check independent testing for the specific model.
What “performance” means for a gaming mouse
Latency is not one measurement. Click latency is the time between pressing a button and the computer registering it; sensor latency is how quickly the mouse reports movement. A result for one does not establish the other.

RTINGS’ testing finds that many current wireless gaming mice with proprietary USB receivers are on par with, or sometimes faster than, the highest-performing wired-only mice in sensor-latency tests. Its click-latency guidance likewise says advances in wireless technology let many receiver-connected mice match or surpass wired models. Those findings describe tested models and methods, not every mouse on the market. RTINGS’ sensor-latency methodology and click-latency methodology explain the distinction.
Wired, USB receiver, and Bluetooth compared
| Connection | What the evidence says | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Wired USB | RTINGS classifies click latency under 10 ms as a good value in its testing framework. A cable does not guarantee a lower result than a well-performing receiver-connected mouse. | A sound low-latency choice if you prefer not to charge or manage a wireless connection. |
| Dedicated USB receiver (often 2.4 GHz) | RTINGS also classifies click latency under 10 ms as a good value for this mode. Many tested receiver-connected models match or surpass wired models in latency performance. | Usually the relevant wireless mode for gaming when you want to play without a cable. |
| Bluetooth | RTINGS generally finds the highest click latency among the three modes. Its “good value” category is under 20 ms, while the same framework labels results above 15 ms as a noticeable difference. | Useful for convenience, compatibility, or power saving; use the receiver or wired mode when prioritizing low latency. |
The thresholds in this table are RTINGS’ own evaluation categories, updated in 2025—not universal human-perception standards. The overlap between its Bluetooth “good value” category and its “noticeable difference” label also means they should not be treated as a single pass/fail rule. Check the exact mouse and mode in the RTINGS latency test results.

What polling rate changes—and what it does not
Polling rate is how often the mouse reports its status to the computer. At 1,000 Hz, the nominal interval is 1 ms; at 8,000 Hz, it is 0.125 ms, with up to eight times as many reports each second. These are reporting intervals, not total end-to-end latency, and a higher setting does not automatically make a player more accurate or guarantee a noticeable gameplay improvement.
Razer’s technology page reports average click latency of 0.291 ms for its HyperSpeed Wireless Gen 2 at 8,000 Hz, 0.461 ms for Gen 1 at 8,000 Hz, and 0.807 ms for non-Razer wireless at 8,000 Hz. Razer describes its measurements as the time from electrical click actuation to the frame received or reflected at the host in a controlled environment, with accuracy up to 1 μs. These are manufacturer-reported results, not independent testing. The same page gives 0.090 ms for its wired 8,000 Hz setup and 0.549 ms for a best non-Razer wired 1,000 Hz setup; because both polling rate and product implementation differ, those figures are not a controlled wired-versus-wireless comparison. See Razer’s HyperSpeed Wireless technology explanation.

- HERO Gaming Sensor: Next generation HERO mouse sensor delivers precision tracking up to 25600 DPI with zero smoothing, filtering or acceleration
- 11 programmable buttons and dual mode hyper-fast scroll wheel: The Logitech wired gaming mouse gives you fully customizable control over your gameplay
- Adjustable weights: Match your playing style. Arrange up to five 3.6 g weights for a personalized weight and balance configuration
- LIGHTSYNC technology: Logitech G LIGHTSYNC technology provides fully customizable RGB lighting that can also synchronize with your gaming (requires Logitech Gaming Software)
- Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback
Very high polling rates can also expose compatibility issues: some older game engines may not handle them well. If a game or system stutters, lower the polling rate and see whether the problem clears.

- Choose a receiver-connected wireless mouse if you want a cable-free desk and low-latency play. Look for independent results for the exact model, confirm those results apply to its USB receiver mode, and keep the receiver close to the mouse.
- Choose wired if you want to avoid charging or wireless setup. Cable drag can affect comfort or movement; a bungee may help, but cable drag is not evidence that the sensor itself is slower.
- Use Bluetooth for convenience when gaming latency is not the priority. If the mouse supports both Bluetooth and a dedicated receiver, switch to the receiver for gaming; wired mode is another option if available.
Connectivity is only one part of the decision. Compare click and movement latency separately, maximum polling rate, shape, weight, build quality, battery life, charging routine, and how the receiver or cable fits your setup. A model that tests well but feels uncomfortable or needs charging more often than you want may still be the wrong choice.

- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance

Set up a low-latency connection
- Select the gaming connection: connect the mouse by USB cable or choose its dedicated USB receiver mode rather than Bluetooth.
- Place the receiver nearby: position it close to the mouse where possible, using an extender if your setup needs one.
- Set polling rate: use the mouse’s highest supported rate as a starting point. If a particular game or system stutters, lower it until performance is stable.
- Disable power-saving features: turn off mouse power-saving settings that could interfere with responsiveness while gaming, if the software provides that option.
- Check the exact model’s results: confirm that latency measurements refer to the connection mode you will actually use and note whether the source measured clicks or movement.
Bottom line: the connection alone does not decide the winner
A well-tested wireless mouse on its dedicated USB receiver can be as responsive as a wired mouse for gaming. Wired remains a reliable low-latency choice; Bluetooth is generally the convenience mode rather than the first choice for latency-sensitive play. Choose by model-specific performance, connection mode, comfort, and charging or cable trade-offs—not by the assumption that every wireless mouse is slower.
