A missing or incomplete YouTube archive does not prove that Wirecast stopped streaming at 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance is about archiving, not a stated rule that every live broadcast is forcibly ended at 12 hours. First check whether the event actually ended in YouTube Live Control Room and whether Wirecast is still sending video.
What YouTube’s 12-hour guidance actually says
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” The statement covers streams shorter than 12 hours and automatic archiving. It does not say that YouTube automatically stops every live stream at the 12-hour mark. A missing archive, an incomplete archive, and a broadcast that has actually ended are different problems.

So, if you are asking, “Why does my Wirecast YouTube stream end after 12 hours?”, do not diagnose a platform cutoff from the clock alone. Check the event status in Live Control Room, Wirecast’s output status, and whether YouTube’s preview is receiving the encoder feed. YouTube’s guidance on archiving does not establish what happened in a particular broadcast or guarantee behavior for streams lasting 12 hours or longer.

| What you see | What it may mean | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The event is still marked live, but no archive is visible or the archive is incomplete. | Archive processing or the difference between live status and archive availability. A missing archive alone does not establish that the stream ended. | Check Live Control Room, the channel’s Live tab, and your local recording. |
| Wirecast reports a lost output, or YouTube no longer receives the encoder feed. | A connection, destination, server, or network problem may have interrupted delivery. | Check Wirecast output status, YouTube preview, the configured destination, and upload capacity. |
| Dropped frames, application exceptions, or stream termination occur. | Computer load or system capacity may be contributing. | Monitor CPU use and other system load while streaming. |
| The stream becomes unstable when delivery capacity is exceeded. | The configured data rate may be too high for the available upload path. | Test upload capacity and lower the data rate; if needed, reduce frame rate or frame size. |
| Wirecast’s native YouTube destination fails to authenticate, connect, or behave as expected. | A destination-specific, configuration, or service-side problem may be involved. | Check the instructions for your installed Wirecast version and the destination settings; consider the RTMP workaround only for destination trouble. |
These are diagnostic possibilities, not a confirmed cause for any individual stream. Without the Wirecast version, event settings, connection measurements, logs, and a reproduction, no one can identify the cause of a particular interruption from its duration alone.

Work through the checks in order
- Confirm what ended. In YouTube Live Control Room, check whether the event is still live or ended. Compare that with Wirecast’s output status and YouTube’s preview. Do not infer that the broadcast stopped solely because an archive is absent.
- Protect the recording. Record locally if the content matters. During the broadcast, check that the local file is growing; afterward, verify that it is intact and usable. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends checking the integrity of local archive files.
- Check the computer and delivery path. Review CPU use, dropped frames, upload capacity, and whether the encoder remains connected. Telestream advises keeping system CPU usage below 60% in its troubleshooting guidance; this is Telestream’s recommendation, not a YouTube requirement or a proven threshold for your incident. If capacity is a concern, lower the data rate and, if necessary, the frame rate or frame size.
- Verify the Wirecast destination. Confirm that the intended YouTube destination, event, encoder, and connection are selected. Telestream’s Wirecast 16 guide describes the YouTube destination and notes that a backup server can be selected in certain authentication or connection-failure cases. Interface labels may vary by installed version, so follow the guide for your version.
- Use RTMP only for a destination problem. Telestream lists RTMP output to a YouTube account as a workaround when the native YouTube output destination has trouble. It is a connection/destination alternative, not a documented way to change YouTube’s archive handling or bypass a duration rule.
- Plan a monitored handoff if you must run longer than 12 hours. Test a planned restart or handoff in advance. Keep a local recording, monitor the event, and confirm in Live Control Room that the new feed is arriving before relying on it. This is cautious operational planning, not a guarantee about YouTube’s behavior beyond 12 hours.
How to keep a YouTube live stream running longer than 12 hours
First determine whether the issue is archiving or ingest. If the event really loses its encoder feed, address the relevant Wirecast, network, or computer issue above; neither the cited YouTube archiving statement nor Telestream’s RTMP workaround establishes that a particular setup can run indefinitely. For a broadcast that cannot be interrupted, arrange monitoring and a tested handoff rather than assuming that a missing archive means the live event has stopped—or that a live event will continue without intervention.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than stream a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud continues looping the video with your computer off. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not provide a live camera feed.
