Choose a winter jacket for the conditions you face, not a single number on its label. Fill power compares the loft and efficiency of down, but it does not give a jacket a universal temperature rating. For cold, dry weather and lightweight packing, down is often a strong choice; for damp conditions or strenuous activity, synthetic or hybrid insulation can be more practical. In rain or wet snow, check the finished jacket’s waterproof construction and sealed seams—DWR alone is not waterproofing.
Are winter jackets temperature rated?
Usually, no: insulated jackets generally do not have standardized temperature ratings comparable to sleeping-bag ratings. REI notes that warmth depends on more than the jacket, including how cold you tend to feel, your activity, wetness, and the other layers you wear. A number or warmth category supplied by a brand should therefore be treated as that brand’s guidance, not a universal promise or a reliable cross-brand comparison.

For example, Canada Goose uses a five-point Thermal Experience Index for its own products. It is a manufacturer-specific framework, not a shared temperature scale for all jackets. REI’s guide to choosing insulated jackets and the Canada Goose product FAQ describe these different approaches.

Fill power measures down loft: the volume, in cubic inches, occupied by one ounce of down. One ounce that occupies 650 cubic inches is 650-fill-power down. Patagonia says fill-power ratings typically range from 300 to 900; that is a range of down specifications, not a temperature or finished-jacket warmth scale.

Fill weight is the amount of insulation in the jacket. The two figures answer different questions: fill power indicates how much loft a given weight of down can provide, while fill weight tells you how much insulation the garment contains. Patagonia explains that higher-fill-power down can deliver a better warmth-to-weight ratio, since less down may be needed for comparable insulation. Its December 2025 guide also cautions that fill power is not an exact measure of a jacket’s warmth. Patagonia’s down insulation guide explains the distinction.
Does higher fill power mean a warmer jacket?
Not by itself. Higher fill power can indicate more efficient, compressible down, but a jacket’s warmth also depends on how much insulation it uses, how that insulation is distributed, its materials and construction, and how it fits over your layers. A high fill-power figure without information about fill weight and the finished garment is not enough to rank two jackets.

Compare jackets across the whole use case: insulation type and amount, fit and layering room, shell protection, weight and packability, and practical details such as a hood or ventilation. Use fill power as one comparison point when evaluating down—not as a stand-alone warmth score.
Which is warmer in practice: down, synthetic, or hybrid insulation?
The better choice depends on the weather and how you will use the jacket. REI describes down as warm for its weight, light, and compressible, while synthetic insulation can retain some warmth when damp and dry faster. A hybrid jacket places down and synthetic fill in different areas, trading some of down’s warmth-to-weight and packability for damp-weather practicality.

| Insulation | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Down | Conditions are cold and dry, or low weight and packability matter. | It takes longer to dry and loses warmth when wet. |
| Synthetic | Dampness, sweat, or energetic activity is likely. | It is generally heavier and less packable than down. |
| Hybrid | You want down in some areas and synthetic insulation in others. | It can improve wet-weather practicality, but gives up some warmth-to-weight and packability compared with pure down. |
These are general material trade-offs, not guarantees for every jacket. The jacket’s amount and placement of insulation, fit, shell, and construction still matter. See REI’s insulation comparison for its guidance on down, synthetic fills, and blends.
Is water-repellent the same as waterproof?
No. Durable water repellent (DWR) is a surface treatment that encourages water to bead and roll off the outer fabric. It can wear off, and a saturated face fabric may feel cold or clammy even when a waterproof membrane underneath is not leaking.

Waterproof protection depends on the finished garment, not just a fabric or membrane name. GORE-TEX explains that its waterproof apparel uses seam tape and that construction, components such as zippers and thread, and rain assessment also matter. A fabric’s hydrostatic-pressure result alone cannot establish how the complete jacket performs in rain or how durable its protection will be. Check the maker’s claim for the finished jacket and whether its seams are sealed. GORE-TEX’s waterproof technology explainer discusses garment construction and testing.

What should I wear over a down jacket in rain or wet snow?
If your insulated jacket is not weatherproof, wear a separate waterproof-breathable shell over it when rain or wet snow is possible. The shell helps protect the down layer from getting wet; a water-resistant face treatment on the puffy is not a substitute for a waterproof outer layer. REI recommends a rain jacket over a puffy for wet conditions. Follow the insulation jacket’s care label if it gets wet. REI’s jacket guide covers layering and wet-weather use.
