The spectacle is unsettling, but it has a biological purpose. These winged termites, called alates or swarmers, leave mature colonies to disperse and reproduce. An outdoor swarm means termites are nearby—not necessarily inside your home. Swarmers or shed wings indoors are a stronger reason to investigate.
Why are there flying termites all of a sudden?
Mature termite colonies periodically produce winged reproductive termites. When conditions suit their species and location, the alates leave in a dispersal flight. They pair after landing, shed their wings, and search for a place to begin a colony. Many do not succeed; a small number may become new colony founders.

The suddenness is part of what makes a flight feel like a scene from a horror film. The mass of insects can be dramatic, and the abandoned wings may remain after the swarm has passed. The winged reproductives are not the caste that eats structural wood; workers do that. University of Maryland Extension and Penn State Extension describe the reproductive flight and colony roles.

Why the spectacle can look especially eerie
Appearance varies by species and circumstances. The University of Florida IFAS account of the Florida darkwinged subterranean termite describes alates launching from conspicuous swarm tubes after or during rain and adhering in numbers to wet surfaces. It compares those launches to plumes of smoke. That is a reported feature of this species, not a description that applies to every termite swarm.

Are these flying ants or termites?
Look closely at the insects rather than relying on the overall impression. Termite alates have straight antennae, a broad waist without a pinch, and two pairs of wings that are about the same size. Winged ants have bent antennae, a narrow waist, and front wings longer than their hind wings.
| Feature | Termite alate | Winged ant |
|---|---|---|
| Antennae | Straight | Bent |
| Waist | Broad, without a pronounced pinch | Narrow, visibly pinched |
| Wings | Front and hind wings about equal in size | Front wings longer than hind wings |
These visible traits are more useful for identification than the fact that the insects appeared in a swarm. Penn State Extension outlines the distinguishing features in its eastern subterranean termite guide.

When do termites swarm?
There is no single termite-swarming season that applies everywhere. Timing depends on species and locality, and flights may be associated with humid, calm conditions or rain. These regional examples show why a calendar for one place should not be treated as a forecast for another.

Do termite swarmers mean my house is infested?
Location matters. An outdoor swarm indicates a termite colony is nearby, but it does not prove the building is infested. Swarmers indoors or piles of shed wings inside can be an early indication of an infestation and warrant investigation. Shelter tubes or soil packed into cracks are also reasons to seek qualified inspection advice.
Mississippi State University Extension urban entomologist Santos Portugal explains the concern: “But termites in structures are a bad thing, especially since we tend to make our buildings out of their favorite type of food — dead trees,” he said. He adds: “If you find swarmers outdoors near your house, you might consider reaching out to a qualified pest management company to have an inspection conducted on your home.” The guidance appears in “Protect buildings from swarming termites,” published March 13, 2024 and updated August 8, 2025.

What should you do after seeing a swarm?
If the swarm is outdoors
Note where and when it appeared and whether insects or shed wings are also present indoors. A nearby outdoor swarm alone does not establish that termites have entered the building. Mississippi State University Extension suggests considering a qualified pest-management inspection when swarmers are found outdoors near a home; that is an option for assessing local risk, not a reason to assume an infestation or choose a treatment based on the swarm alone.
If you find swarmers or shed wings indoors
Take the indoor evidence seriously and arrange an investigation by a qualified professional. The University of Maryland Extension describes indoor swarmers and shed wings as signs that merit attention, while the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension discusses property-owner inspection and termite-control services in its Georgia property-owner guide.

Check conditions around the foundation
Some conditions can give termites more opportunity to invade buildings. Mississippi State University Extension identifies moisture problems such as leaks, wood in direct contact with soil, stored lumber or firewood against the building, and mulch piled too high against the foundation. These are practical areas to check; none by itself confirms an infestation.
For broader prevention and control context, see the University of Florida IFAS guide to termite prevention and control.
