Wine vs. Proton: Which Compatibility Layer Should You Use?

Use Proton for Windows games launched through Steam on Linux or SteamOS; use Wine as the broader starting point for Windows applications outside Steam.

For Windows games you launch through Steam on Linux or SteamOS, start with Proton. For Windows applications outside Steam, start with Wine or an application-specific Wine-based workflow. Neither tool guarantees that a particular game or program will work, so check compatibility for the exact title you want to run.

What is the difference between Wine and Proton?

Wine is a general-purpose compatibility layer for Windows applications on POSIX systems, including Linux, macOS and BSD. Rather than running a full Windows virtual machine or emulating a PC, it translates Windows API calls into calls the host system can use.

Proton is Valve’s compatibility tool for running Windows games through the Steam client on Linux. It is based on Wine and adds gaming-oriented components and Steam integration. Valve describes it as a modified Wine distribution with additional libraries developed alongside it in its Steam for Linux announcements.

In short, Proton is not a separate alternative to Wine’s underlying approach: it packages that approach for Steam gaming. Wine is the broader tool; Proton is tailored to a particular gaming workflow.

Which should you use?

Your situation Start with Why
A Windows game installed and launched through Steam on Linux Proton supplied by Steam It is integrated with Steam’s compatibility-tool selection and per-game settings. Valve says most users should use the Steam-supplied version.
A Windows game on Steam Deck Proton supplied by Steam SteamOS is Linux-based, and Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for Windows games on Linux. The Steam Deck booklet provides device context.
A Windows application you need to run outside Steam Wine or a Wine-based workflow intended for that application Wine’s stated scope is general Windows applications across supported POSIX systems; Proton’s core purpose is Steam games.
A Steam game that does not work as expected First try Steam’s Proton options; consider advanced configuration only if needed Proton versions and launch configuration can be troubleshooting variables, but changing them cannot guarantee that a title will work.

For Steam games, begin with the Proton version Steam offers rather than installing a separate build by default. Valve’s Proton repository says most users should use the version supplied by Steam; local builds are an option for advanced users. Setup details can vary by Linux distribution, so consult its documentation as well.

How do their workflows and game components differ?

  • Steam integration: Proton appears in Steam’s compatibility-tool selection and supports per-game settings. Wine is a general compatibility layer; the way you configure and run an application depends on the program and your distribution.
  • Separate game environments: Valve’s Proton FAQ says Proton creates a separate Wine prefix for each game. This keeps each game’s Wine environment separate; it does not itself establish that the game is compatible.
  • Graphics options: Proton includes game-oriented graphics implementations and documents runtime options such as DXVK and wined3d. Valve’s Steamworks Proton documentation covers Proton’s role and components. Wine’s general-purpose remit is not described in the cited WineHQ material as a comparable game-specific configuration package.

What to do when a game or application fails

  1. Identify the exact program and how you launch it. A Steam game points you toward Proton; a Windows application outside Steam points you toward Wine or a workflow designed for that application.
  2. For a Steam game, try Steam’s supplied Proton version and per-game compatibility settings. The available choices and setup can depend on your distribution and Steam configuration.
  3. Check the specific title’s compatibility and requirements. Support for Windows applications varies by program, and a general statement about Wine or Proton cannot establish that one particular title works.
  4. For a stubborn Steam game, treat Proton version and launch configuration as variables. Valve documents advanced launch options and runtime overrides, including an example that selects OpenGL-based wined3d rather than Vulkan-based DXVK. These are troubleshooting options, not a universal fix; change them only when you understand the trade-off.

Does choosing Proton mean every Steam game will work?

No. Proton is built for Steam gaming, but compatibility depends on the individual game and its requirements. The fact that Proton includes gaming-focused components or that Steam offers compatibility settings is not proof that a specific title will run correctly. Check the exact game before relying on it.

Bottom line

Use Steam’s Proton for Windows games in Steam on Linux or SteamOS. Use Wine for Windows applications outside Steam. Proton builds on Wine, but its Steam integration and game-oriented components make it the more direct starting point for Steam gaming—not a guarantee of compatibility.
