Windscribe Free is useful for lighter VPN use, but its monthly data cap is a real constraint for regular streaming.
Is Windscribe VPN trustworthy?
Windscribe is more transparent than a provider that offers only a broad “no logs” slogan: it publishes a privacy policy, discloses audits, and has a documented legal episode that gives its data practices real-world context. Those are useful signals, not a guarantee that every app version or future server configuration is secure.

The policy on Windscribe’s site says it was last updated July 30, 2024. The account of the Greek legal case comes from co-founder Yegor Sak, and the court’s dismissal should not be treated as a judicial endorsement of every privacy claim. Together, the evidence supports a qualified assessment: Windscribe makes specific claims and has some external scrutiny, but readers should understand the limits and dates of that evidence.

Windscribe says it does not store historical VPN sessions, users’ source IP addresses, or the websites they visit. It does retain certain limited data. According to its privacy policy, it keeps the total bytes transferred during a 30-day period and the timestamp of a user’s last activity. It says these records help enforce free-plan limits, prevent abuse, and identify inactive accounts.

While a user is connected, some connection details are held in server memory and discarded when the session ends. The policy identifies the OpenVPN/IKEv2 username, connection time, and transferred data among these details; it also describes central counters for simultaneous connections and transferred bytes. Windscribe’s policy puts its approach this way: “Anything that is not mentioned above is not stored.” That statement is Windscribe’s, and it is best read alongside the specific data it does describe—not as a claim that the service handles no data at all.
How much should the audits reassure you?
The audit record is a set of separate examinations, not a single certification covering every Windscribe product indefinitely. Windscribe’s audit disclosure lists:

- FreshScribe server stack: Packetlabs audit in June 2024.
- Desktop applications: Leviathan Security Group audit in September 2021.
- Android and iOS applications: Leviathan audits in March 2022; Windscribe says the issues identified in the application audits were addressed.
The newer server-stack audit is relevant evidence about that stack at the time it was examined. The older app audits do not establish the security of every subsequent release, and none of these dates should be mistaken for ongoing certification of all infrastructure and configurations.

What does the Greek court case show?
In a company blog post dated April 24, 2025, Windscribe co-founder Yegor Sak described a Finnish Windscribe server IP being connected to an alleged breach in Greece, said he was charged, and reported that the case was dismissed on April 11, 2025. Sak wrote: “On April 11th 2025, I finally got my day in court, and was found not guilty, or rather the case was dismissed.”

This is a notable episode because it concerns a real investigation involving a Windscribe server IP. But the public account is Sak’s, and a dismissal is not a blanket court finding that verifies every element of Windscribe’s logging policy. Read the details in Sak’s account of the Greek case.
Is Windscribe Free safe, and what are its limits?
The free plan uses a shared pool of free servers. Windscribe’s free-plan page lists 10 GB of data per month with a verified email address, or 2 GB per month without one, across 10 countries. It also lists unlimited simultaneous devices. The data allowance, rather than the device count, is likely to be the limiting factor for people who stream or game regularly.

A free plan can be a practical way to use a VPN for occasional browsing or short sessions, but a monthly allowance is not equivalent to unlimited protection or entertainment use. Tom’s Guide’s review, dated November 26, 2025, tested Windscribe Free on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS and described the 10 GB cap as restrictive for regular streaming or gaming. Its findings are specific to that review’s testing and the service at that time.
Does Windscribe work for streaming?
Sometimes, according to Tom’s Guide’s testing, but results were mixed across services. VPN endpoints can be detected and blocked, and availability can change, so a review result is not a promise that a particular catalog will work when you subscribe. The free tier’s 10 GB monthly allowance with a verified email also makes frequent video streaming difficult even when a connection works.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Tom’s Guide also notes that features vary by platform: split tunneling and kill-switch availability are not identical across its tested apps. Check the features on the specific device you plan to use rather than assuming every app has the same controls.
How fast is Windscribe?
There is no robust population-wide speed figure in the cited reviews. TechRadar reported 2,263 Mbps on WireGuard and 770 Mbps on OpenVPN in its own 2026 test setup, which included a 10 GB line and a cloud PC. Those are test results, not speeds subscribers should expect: distance to the chosen server, network conditions, device, and protocol can all affect performance. TechRadar explicitly cautions that users may see different results in its Windscribe review.
Which devices can you use it on?
Windscribe lists support for several device categories, including routers, on its supported-devices and free-plan page. Tom’s Guide says router use requires a paid account. A VPN-compatible router can extend VPN coverage to devices that lack a native Windscribe app, but router support depends on the model and firmware; the available sources do not establish compatibility for a particular setup.
Who should choose Windscribe?
Windscribe is worth considering if you want a provider with a published, specific privacy policy and disclosed audits, and your use fits its available plan. The free option is most practical for light or occasional use; frequent streaming and gaming are poor fits for a capped allowance. Before choosing any VPN, compare the dated scope of its privacy evidence, its free data and location limits, the paid price for your country and billing term, platform-specific controls, and independent streaming and speed tests.
