Use a window size class to adapt your Jetpack Compose layout to the space the app actually has—not to guess whether a device is a phone or tablet. Read the current class near your app’s top level, make a small number of layout decisions from it, and pass those decisions to child composables. For current Compose Material 3 Adaptive APIs, use currentWindowAdaptiveInfoV2().
What a window size class tells you
A window size class categorizes the display area available to your app window. It is not a device-type label: a tablet in split screen may have a compact window, while a phone in a different configuration can have more space than expected. Resizing, multi-window use, rotation, and folding or unfolding can all change the available area while the app is running. Android’s window size class guidance and its foldable guidance describe these distinctions.

Width and height are classified independently. Width is often the main axis for deciding whether content can sit side by side, because vertical content can commonly scroll. Height still matters: a short landscape window may not leave enough room for a useful two-pane arrangement.

These are shared viewport categories, not a mandate to change your UI at every boundary. Choose transitions based on whether the content remains useful at the dimensions available. A list-detail screen, for example, should show both panes only when each can retain a practical width; the class names alone cannot determine that for every app.

Use the current Compose adaptive API
For current Compose Material 3 Adaptive, obtain the class from currentWindowAdaptiveInfoV2():

}The V2 API reference says the function was added in Compose Material 3 Adaptive 1.3.0 and supports large and extra-large width classes by default. The older currentWindowAdaptiveInfo() was added in 1.2.0 and deprecated in 1.3.0; its API reference directs developers to V2 for large and extra-large width support.

Check the Compose window size class guide and your project’s dependency setup before adopting the API, since library compatibility depends on the app’s Compose and Kotlin configuration. A 1.4.0-alpha02 example appeared on the release page at the time of the guide; it is a prerelease example, not a stable-version recommendation.

First decide what the content needs, then map the available window to a small number of explicit layout choices. Avoid scattering raw dp comparisons or class checks across unrelated composables. Android recommends localizing display-size handling and passing the size class or a derived state into nested UI. Its guidance for supporting different display sizes also recommends basing app-level layout choices on the area allocated to the app.

- Identify the content constraint. Decide the minimum useful width for each pane, whether persistent navigation improves the experience, and whether the arrangement works at short heights.
- Read the current class at an app-level boundary. Use
currentWindowAdaptiveInfoV2().windowSizeClasswith a compatible Compose Material 3 Adaptive dependency. - Derive named layout state. Convert the class and any relevant height constraint into decisions such as
showNavigationRailorpaneCount. - Pass state down explicitly. Give child composables the class or the derived choice they need, rather than having each component invent its own breakpoint policy.
- Keep each layout flexible. A class-based choice does not replace ordinary responsive sizing within the chosen layout.
Because the window can change during use, make these decisions from current state so the UI recomputes on resize, rotation, or fold changes. Preserve interaction state where the layout rearranges; a size transition should not unnecessarily reset a selection or discard in-progress work.
Choose a transition by testing the content
There is no universal rule that a particular class must trigger a two-pane layout. Compare the alternatives against the actual UI:

- Content fit: Does each pane keep enough width to show meaningful content without awkward truncation?
- Navigation: Is navigation clear at compact widths, and does a rail or persistent navigation help when more space is available?
- Height: Does the multi-pane arrangement remain usable in compact-height windows?
- Resize behavior: Does the UI adapt without clipping, abrupt jumps, or lost state?
- Implementation complexity: Is a class-driven layout switch clearer than one continuously flexible arrangement for this content?
Use these checks to select a transition that serves the layout, rather than treating a framework boundary as an automatic design requirement.
Test ranges and transition points
Test compact, medium, and expanded widths, including the points where your app changes its layout. Test short-height windows as well as split-screen or other resizable configurations. If foldables are in scope, exercise folding and unfolding too. Android recommends testing across a variety of window sizes; checking one representative window per class may miss problems between them. The display-size guidance and foldable guidance provide further context.
