If Windows won’t start after a restore, first identify which restore feature ran. For a failed traditional System Restore, Microsoft documents an Undo system restore option in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). If that is unavailable or does not work, try Startup Repair. Windows 11’s newer Point-in-time restore is different: it rolls back the system drive, including personal files, so do not assume the traditional undo steps apply.
First identify which restore ran
Windows has two features with similar names but different effects. Check the screen or instructions you used before the restart: a restore-point wizard indicates traditional System Restore; a Windows 11 Point-in-time restore screen indicates the newer feature.

| Feature | Availability | What it restores | Personal files | Restore points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional System Restore | Windows 10 and Windows 11 | System files and settings, including affected programs, drivers, updates, or registry settings | Microsoft says personal files are not affected | Created by Windows or manually; retention depends on disk space |
| Point-in-time restore | Windows 11 version 24H2 or later | The entire system state on the system drive | Files, apps, settings, passwords, certificates, and keys created or changed after the selected point can be affected; cloud-stored files such as OneDrive files are not | Automatic snapshots are retained for up to 72 hours, according to Microsoft Support |
For traditional System Restore, the wizard can scan for programs that may be affected before applying a point. Microsoft’s restore-point documentation describes the undo operation for a restore that fails during restart. Do not assume that the same option appears in the newer Point-in-time restore interface.

Windows won’t boot after System Restore: undo the failed restore
If the traditional restore failed while restarting, open WinRE and look for Undo system restore. Microsoft documents this path for returning the computer to its condition before the failed restore attempt.

- Complete Windows Repair Toolkit – includes tools to remove viruses, reset passwords, recover lost files, and fix boot errors like BOOTMGR or NTLDR missing.
- Reinstall or Upgrade Windows – perform a clean reinstall of Windows 7 (32bit and 64bit), 10, or 11 (amd64 + arm64) to restore performance and stability. (Windows license not included.). Includes Full Driver Pack – ensures hardware compatibility after installation. Automatically detects and installs drivers for most PCs.
- Premium Hardware & Reliable Support – built with high-quality flash chips for speed and longevity. TECH STORE ON provides responsive customer support within 24 hours.
- Enter WinRE. If Windows does not open recovery automatically after repeated startup failures, use Windows installation media on the affected PC and select Repair my PC.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Select Undo system restore if it is offered, then follow the on-screen prompts and let the operation finish.
- Restart the PC and check whether Windows starts.
The documented undo is specifically for a failed traditional restore during restart; it is not a promise that every recovery screen or restore type provides this choice.
How to get into Windows Recovery Environment
WinRE may start automatically after repeated failed attempts to start Windows. If it does not, boot the affected PC from Windows installation media and choose Repair my PC rather than starting an installation. Microsoft describes WinRE and installation-media recovery in its Windows Recovery Environment guidance and recovery options.
If another working PC is available, you can use it to create Windows installation media on a USB flash drive, then boot the affected PC from that media. The USB is a way to reach recovery tools; it does not repair Windows by itself. Follow Microsoft’s media and recovery instructions for the Windows version you are using.

If Undo system restore is not offered, or Windows still will not boot afterward, return to WinRE and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Startup Repair checks for common startup problems, including missing or damaged system files, boot configuration data, the master boot record, incompatible drivers, and registry errors. It attempts repairs but cannot fix every cause. See Microsoft’s Startup Repair instructions.

If the problem began after a Windows update
When the boot problem started after an update, use WinRE’s Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates option. Choose the relevant update-removal option presented on screen. This is most appropriate when the timing points to a recent update; it is not a substitute for undoing a failed restore when that is the actual cause. Microsoft includes update removal among its Windows recovery options.
Do I need my BitLocker recovery key?
Possibly. On an encrypted PC, WinRE may require the BitLocker recovery key before allowing access to recovery tools. Retrieve it through the Microsoft account associated with the device or ask your organization’s IT administrator. Do not try to bypass encryption. Microsoft flags this requirement in its Startup Repair guidance and System Restore instructions.
When to reset or reinstall Windows
Use these more disruptive choices only after trying the available recovery tools. Reset this PC lets you choose whether to keep personal files, but it removes apps and settings. Reinstalling Windows from installation media can remove everything. Before proceeding, make sure you understand which files are backed up and what will be lost. Microsoft recommends trying other recovery options first and notes that manufacturer recovery media may have better hardware-specific compatibility; see its recovery options guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf neither WinRE nor installation media can restore startup, stop before taking steps that could overwrite important data and seek help from a qualified PC repair or data-recovery professional. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s WinRE guidance; a successful repair does not mean that Windows 10 continues to receive free updates or security fixes.
