For Windows Update for Business reports, Windows devices must send at least Required diagnostic data—formerly called Basic. Enhanced diagnostic data on Windows 10 and Optional on Windows 11 are recommendations, not prerequisites. Intune feature update compatibility reports also depend on tenant-level Windows data collection, and device names require a separate opt-in. These settings help explain why Windows update reports may show no data or why a feature update readiness status is unknown.
What Intune’s Windows update reports tell you
Intune’s Windows feature update compatibility reports help administrators find device, application, and driver risks before deploying a particular Windows version. The two report views answer different questions:

| Report | What it shows | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Device readiness | Compatibility and readiness for individual devices, including system requirement issues and counts of app and driver issues. Select a device to see more detail in its flyout. | Find which devices are ready, at risk, or need investigation. |
| Compatibility risks | An organization-level summary of risks for the selected target OS, including asset type, name, vendor, version, affected devices, risk status, and issue description. | Identify app or driver risks affecting the fleet. |
Both reports are specific to the selected target OS. Choose the same Windows version your organization intends to deploy; findings for another target may not describe the planned rollout. Microsoft documents the report types and workflow, and explains the target-version relationship in its Windows update readiness guidance.

Set eligible Windows devices to send at least Required diagnostic data. Microsoft describes this as the minimum for Windows Update for Business reports; the level was previously named Basic. Enhanced on Windows 10 and Optional on Windows 11 are recommended for reporting, but are not required. Raising every device to Optional is not necessary just to meet the stated minimum. See Microsoft’s Windows Update for Business reports prerequisites.

The device-level diagnostic setting is not the only prerequisite for Intune feature update reporting. Microsoft’s Intune troubleshooting guidance also identifies tenant-level Windows data collection as necessary for accurate reports. This is a separate tenant control, not another name for the device’s Required data level. Consult Microsoft’s feature update reporting troubleshooting guidance for that requirement. The exact current admin-center navigation and control label are not specified here, so avoid relying on an assumed click path.
Device names are controlled separately
Meeting the diagnostic data minimum does not automatically make device names visible in reports. Microsoft says names appear only when an organization separately opts in through the System/AllowDeviceNameInDiagnosticData Policy CSP or the corresponding Group Policy setting under Windows Components > Data Collection and Preview Builds. Treat this as a privacy decision: review organizational policy before enabling name reporting, and do not broaden collection solely because names are absent.

Check service setup and device eligibility
Windows Update for Business reports requires service enrollment and an Azure Log Analytics workspace, as well as correctly configured clients. Microsoft lists Intune, a script, and manual configuration as supported client-configuration methods. Its service configuration documentation says the service is available in Azure Commercial cloud, not GCC High or the US Department of Defense cloud.

Microsoft flags a known issue in which Enterprise multi-session data may not display. The service is not a reporting solution for Windows Server, Surface Hub, or IoT. Eligibility also depends on join state: Entra joined and hybrid joined devices are supported, while workplace-joined-only devices are not. Check the current prerequisites when validating a specific deployment.

Generate the report for the intended target version
- In Intune, go to Reports > Device management > Windows updates > Reports.
- Choose the device readiness report and select the target operating system version that matches the planned deployment.
- Set scope tags and, if useful, refine by ownership or readiness status.
- Generate the report. It is on-demand; data will not appear in that report until it has been generated.
- Review device-level states and use a device’s flyout for compatibility details. For organization-wide app and driver risks, open the compatibility risks report for the same target version.
The generated report is cached per Intune user. Another administrator should not assume they will see the same generated report automatically; they may need to generate it in their own session. Microsoft’s report instructions describe these workflow details.
Why readiness can be Unknown or data can be missing
Unknown means Intune could not determine the device’s readiness for the selected target. Microsoft advises checking whether the device is configured to send Windows diagnostic data. A missing row or stale result can also reflect service setup, eligibility, tenant collection, connectivity, or processing delay rather than an incompatible device.
- Confirm eligibility and join state. Verify the device uses a supported Windows edition and is Entra joined or hybrid joined; workplace-joined-only devices are unsupported.
- Verify device diagnostic data. Confirm the device sends at least Required diagnostic data. Enhanced on Windows 10 or Optional on Windows 11 is not the minimum.
- Check tenant-level collection. For Intune feature update compatibility reports, confirm Windows data collection is enabled at the tenant level as described in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Check service configuration and connectivity. Confirm Windows Update for Business reports enrollment, the Azure Log Analytics workspace, and client configuration are in place. Ensure required diagnostic-data endpoints are reachable. Microsoft notes that disabling services configuration/OneSettings can result in incorrect or missing client data.
- Allow for upload and processing. Windows diagnostic data typically uploads daily and is processed in batches. Microsoft states the maximum end-to-end latency for these reports is approximately 52 hours; this is a documented maximum, not a guarantee that every device updates on that schedule. See Microsoft’s report data and latency documentation.
- Regenerate and verify the target. Generate the on-demand report again for the Windows version you plan to deploy, and make sure you are viewing the report generated in your own Intune session.
Use higher diagnostic data levels selectively
Required data is the operating minimum established for Windows Update for Business reports. Microsoft recommends Enhanced for Windows 10 and Optional for Windows 11, but the choice to use those higher levels should follow the organization’s data-collection and privacy policies. Device-name exposure remains a separate opt-in regardless of the diagnostic level.
