Keep the Windows Terminal settings that support tasks you repeat; disable or leave alone the ones that add startup behavior, configuration, or screen clutter without helping your work. The useful choices usually involve your default profile, startup and layout restoration, shortcuts, and panes. Microsoft’s documentation explains what these features do, but it does not establish a universally best setup.
Start by checking which settings you actually use
Before changing anything, note the commands and environments you open repeatedly: for example, a particular PowerShell profile, a WSL distribution, or a recurring set of tabs and panes. Then evaluate each setting against that routine. A feature can be useful when it removes a step you repeat and unnecessary when you rarely use it.

Windows Terminal has settings at different scopes. Startup settings affect how the application opens; profile settings affect an individual shell profile, while a defaults object can apply settings across profiles. Check the scope before changing a value globally. Microsoft documents profile-specific properties, defaults, and profile order—and explains that profile order maps to profile-index shortcuts—in its general profile settings guide.

Windows Terminal can be configured in the Settings interface or by editing settings.json. The file’s location differs between stable, preview, and unpackaged installations, so use Microsoft’s installation and setup guide to find the path for your installation type. Do not edit defaults.json: Microsoft says it is generated and that edits to it are ignored.

Keep a default profile that matches your normal starting point
After installation, Windows Terminal starts with PowerShell as the default profile. You can change the default in Settings or in settings.json. WSL distributions and multiple PowerShell versions may also create profiles automatically, so the profile list can include environments you do not use every day. The relevant choices and file locations are covered in Microsoft’s setup documentation.
Keep a default profile if one environment is the right starting point for most sessions. If your work is divided among several environments, choose the one you open most often and retain the others as selectable profiles rather than trying to make every session start in a special way. Before removing a profile-related setting, confirm whether it applies only to one profile or to all profiles through defaults.
Choose startup behavior deliberately
Microsoft documents several root-level startup settings, including defaultProfile, startOnUserLogin, firstWindowPreference, launchMode, disabledProfileSources, and startupActions. The default first-window behavior is defaultProfile. These settings are worth changing only when they solve a specific launch or profile-management need; otherwise, the default behavior avoids extra configuration. See Microsoft’s startup settings guide for the available options.

Use login launch only if you want Terminal to start with Windows
startOnUserLogin controls launch on user login. Enable it if opening Terminal as part of your Windows sign-in is useful; leave it off if you prefer to launch Terminal when needed. Microsoft notes that this setting has no effect if its startup task is disabled by organizational policy or by the user.
Use startup actions only for a genuinely repeated layout
startupActions can specify actions for Terminal’s startup, but those actions apply only when no command-line arguments were supplied. That distinction matters if another program or a shortcut launches Terminal with arguments: startup actions may not determine that session’s layout.
Enable persisted window layout if restoring structure saves setup time
The persistedWindowLayout option saves and restores open-window layouts. Microsoft says the saved information includes window position, size, and name; each window’s tab layout, including pane layout and profile; and the current working directory when the shell reports it. It does not save the contents of panes. Treat restoration as a way to reopen a workspace’s structure, not as a way to resume the running programs or their output. The details are in the startup settings documentation.

Keep layout persistence if you regularly return to a similar set of windows, tabs, and panes. Leave it off if you prefer a clean session or do not want Terminal to restore prior structure. If your shell does not report a working directory, do not assume that the directory will be restored.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep custom actions and keybindings for repeated navigation
Windows Terminal actions can be added to the command palette and bound to keys. Microsoft’s examples include a wt command line that opens PowerShell and splits panes for Command Prompt and Ubuntu. That demonstrates how one command or shortcut can encode a recurring setup; it does not show that the setup improves everyone’s productivity. See the actions documentation for the supported approach and examples.
Retain a custom action if you use it often enough that reproducing its sequence manually is a nuisance. Remove or unbind actions you do not use: every saved shortcut is another piece of configuration to remember and maintain. Keep the action focused on a real routine rather than building shortcuts for hypothetical workflows.

Use panes when simultaneous visibility matters more than space
Panes display multiple command-line applications side by side within one tab. Terminal supports vertical, horizontal, and directional splits; Microsoft describes these options in its panes guide.
A pane is a reasonable fit when you need to watch or use two command-line sessions at the same time. Separate tabs may suit work where only one session needs attention at once. The trade-off is practical rather than a documented performance finding: panes share the available window area, so the value depends on your screen and task.

Be selective with appearance and advanced profile options
Theme and display choices are documented in Microsoft’s appearance guide. Change them when a visual adjustment improves readability or makes profiles easier for you to distinguish; otherwise, appearance customization need not become a project of its own.

Advanced profile properties are similarly task-specific. For example, suppressApplicationTitle controls whether Terminal suppresses an application’s title, and Microsoft notes that changing the antialiasing mode requires a new Terminal instance. Consult the advanced profile settings guide before changing such behavior. The current profiles schema documents new-terminal arguments such as profile, command line, starting directory, tab title, and tab color; because the schema is on the main branch and may change, use the user-facing guides for general setup.
A practical keep-or-disable checklist
- Keep: a default profile that matches your most common starting point.
- Keep: persisted layouts if restoring window, tab, and pane structure fits a recurring routine.
- Keep: custom actions and keybindings that you use for repeated navigation or setup.
- Keep: panes when viewing concurrent sessions is useful in your actual screen setup.
- Disable or leave unchanged: login launch, startup actions, profile-source changes, and visual overrides that do not solve a recurring need.
- Check scope first: confirm whether a profile property affects one profile or all profiles through
defaults.
Apply one change at a time and use Terminal for your ordinary tasks before adding another. That makes it easier to tell whether a setting is helping, and easier to undo one that adds friction. These are decision rules based on the documented feature behavior; the right configuration depends on the workflows and screen setup you actually have.
