Windows Task Scheduler: Why Your Scheduled Task Doesn’t Run (and What 0x41303 Means)

0x41303 is a success status meaning the task has not yet run. Here's how to tell whether the trigger, the action or the security context is the real problem.

0x41303 means “The task has not yet run.” Microsoft defines it as SCHED_S_TASK_HAS_NOT_RUN. It is a success constant (SCHED_S_), not an error. It tells you the task has no completed run on record. It does not tell you why. To find the cause, work out whether the trigger fired, then whether the action started, then whether the security context is the problem.

What 0x41303 does and doesn’t tell you

Microsoft’s Win32 reference, “Task Scheduler error and success constants” (last updated 2024-10-29), lists 0x00041303 as SCHED_S_TASK_HAS_NOT_RUN: “The task has not yet run.” Several things can sit behind that status:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • The task hasn’t reached its trigger time yet.
  • The trigger or conditions were never met.
  • The task did start, but the problem only shows up when the action runs.

Three neighbouring values are easy to confuse with it. They are separate task states:

Value Constant meaning
0x00041300 Ready
0x00041301 Running
0x00041302 Disabled
0x00041303 The task has not yet run

The reference lists Windows Vista (client) and Windows Server 2008 (server) as the minimum supported versions, for desktop apps only. That is an API requirement. It doesn’t mean every troubleshooting step looks identical on every Windows release.

Step 1: Run the action outside Task Scheduler

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide, “Troubleshoot issues with scheduled tasks not running” (updated 2026-02-12, written for supported Windows Server versions), puts it this way: “Task Scheduler is the trigger of a task.” The scheduler only launches the action. Before you blame it, run the complete script or command by hand in PowerShell or Command Prompt and confirm it works. If it fails there, fix the script first. Scheduling won’t help.

Step 2: Check the task’s status and History

Open Task Scheduler, select the task, and look at the Status column and the History tab. History shows whether the task was triggered and whether it completed. Microsoft says a task should normally be in Ready status to be triggered, manually or automatically.

Which branch are you in?

What you see What to do
No trigger event in History Try a manual trigger. If it uses a schedule trigger, set the start time in the future and save the task again so it is re-registered. If it still doesn’t trigger, export the task as XML and inspect it.
Triggered, but the action didn’t work Look for errors in History. Simplify the script or action. Add PowerShell transcripts or command output so you can see where execution stops.
Status stays Running Find the action’s process in Task Manager and work out why it hasn’t exited.
Task completed, but the expected result is missing Trace what the action actually produced, and test under a different security context.

Step 3: Test the security context

If the action works when you run it yourself but not when scheduled, suspect the account it runs under. Microsoft recommends temporarily testing the task with Run only when user is logged on. If it works that way, security context is involved.

Step 4: Check permissions when you see access denied

Microsoft’s article on the “Access Denied” error in Task Scheduler (updated 2026-02-12) names these possible causes:

Rank #3
  • Insufficient administrative privileges.
  • Changed permissions on C:WindowsSystem32Tasks.
  • Task credentials that differ from the current account.

Its guidance includes checking the task’s security settings and the Log on as a batch job user right for the account that runs the task. These checks apply to permission errors. Don’t assume a 0x41303 status means a permissions problem.

Step 5: Collect evidence if it’s still unresolved

  1. Export the task configuration to XML.
  2. Open Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > TaskScheduler > Operational and collect the relevant events.
  3. Gather the History events and any transcript or output your action captured.

Together these let you place the failure at one of three stages: trigger, execution or security context. No single checkbox, reboot or generic repair tool is established as a fix for every case. The cause on your machine only becomes clear from the task definition, its History, the action’s output and the account it runs as.
