Windows Storage Settings: Stop New Files Filling Your System SSD

Redirect supported new Windows content to another drive, then move existing files and review cleanup settings to manage system-drive space.

To stop Windows from continually adding supported new files to a crowded system drive, set their save locations to another connected drive. Then move existing large files off the system drive and review cleanup settings. Changing the default destination affects future content; it does not relocate files already saved.

First, find what is using space

Open File Explorer and select This PC to check available space on each drive. For a breakdown of system-drive use, open Settings and go to System > Storage. Windows groups storage by categories, which can help distinguish large personal files from temporary data.

Look through Videos, Music, Pictures and Downloads for files you no longer need or do not need stored on the PC. In File Explorer, sorting a folder by size can make large items easier to find. Delete only what you intend to remove; if you want the space back immediately, empty the Recycle Bin afterward.

For files you want to keep, choose a destination based on where and when you need them:

Microsoft’s Windows drive-space guidance covers checking storage, moving personal files and changing destinations for new content.

Change where Windows saves new content

Windows 11 and Windows 10 let you choose a destination on another connected drive for supported types of new content. Connect or install the destination drive first, then use the path for your Windows version:

This setting is a forward-looking change, not a migration: it does not move existing files, automatically relocate every personal folder, or control every application’s own save behavior. Microsoft says saving new files to another drive helps prevent future low-space problems on the original drive and avoids repeatedly moving files (Free up drive space in Windows).

Move existing files separately

To reclaim space already occupied, move selected personal files from the system drive to the destination. In File Explorer, select the files or folders, choose Cut, open the destination, and choose Paste. For large collections, move a manageable group at a time and confirm the files are present at the new location before removing any remaining copies.

Moving files to external storage makes them dependent on that device being connected. If they need to be available offline on the PC, use an internal drive with room instead. For OneDrive files, check whether they are stored locally or online-only before moving or changing their availability.

Use Storage Sense with its rules in mind

Storage Sense can remove temporary files and manage items in the Recycle Bin, but it operates on the system drive. Review the cleanup choices under Settings > System > Storage before relying on it. Downloads and cloud content are not managed by default unless you configure those rules. Microsoft describes the available controls in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.

Cleanup recommendations can also help identify items to remove, but automatic cleanup is not a substitute for deciding what personal files to keep and where to store them. Be especially cautious about deleting a previous Windows installation: doing so removes the option to roll back to the prior version.

Storage Sense’s system-drive scope means it is not a general cleanup manager for every connected drive. Check another drive separately in the storage view if you need to see what is using its space.

Choose which OneDrive files stay on the SSD

OneDrive Files On-Demand distinguishes between a file existing in the cloud and a full local copy being kept on the PC. For files you do not need offline, making them online-only can free local space without permanently deleting them. When you open one that is not stored locally, you need network access to download it.

Files marked Always keep on this device remain available locally and are exempt from Storage Sense management. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guidance describes how it handles cloud files and notes that Windows 11 version 22H2 set files not opened for more than 30 days to online-only by default. That detail is specific to the documented version; check your current Windows and OneDrive settings rather than assuming the same default applies to every later build (Manage drive space with Storage Sense).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing which files are local is different from moving the OneDrive folder itself. If the OneDrive folder needs a new location, Microsoft documents a separate process: unlink the account, move the folder, then relink it. Follow the OneDrive folder relocation instructions rather than treating the new-content setting as a folder move. For related OneDrive save-location choices, see Microsoft’s default save location guidance.
