Windows Shortcut Arrow: What to Know Before Changing the Registry

Windows offers no documented setting to hide shortcut arrows. The registry workaround is unofficial and may not work on updated Windows builds, so understand the risks and back up first.

Windows does not document a built-in setting for hiding the arrow overlay on shortcut icons. Removing it generally means trying an unofficial registry customization, and its behavior is not dependable across Windows builds: a Windows 11 24H2 user reported in January 2026 that earlier approaches stopped working after updates. If you want to try a registry change, back up the relevant key first and be prepared to undo it.

Can you remove the arrow without editing the registry?

Not through a documented Windows setting. Microsoft’s desktop icons and shortcuts guidance covers managing desktop icons and shortcuts but does not provide a control to hide the arrow overlay. A Microsoft-hosted Q&A answer likewise says there is no native option, though it is an independent advisor’s answer, not an official Windows specification: Microsoft Q&A.

You can continue using ordinary desktop customization, such as removing shortcuts from the desktop or organizing them elsewhere, without changing the overlay. If you specifically want to hide the arrow, the approach discussed in community instructions changes a registry icon-overlay value; it is not a Microsoft-supported feature.

What the registry workaround involves—and why it may fail

Community instructions point to the Shell Icons key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer and a string value named 29, which is intended to direct the overlay to a blank icon. The sources do not establish a verified, universal set of registry data for current Windows releases, so this is not a reliable copy-and-paste recipe. Microsoft does not document or recommend this as the supported way to remove shortcut arrows.

Compatibility is uncertain. On January 1, 2026, one user in Microsoft Tech Community reported that earlier methods no longer worked on their Windows 11 Pro 24H2 PC after updates. That is a single user’s report, not proof that the workaround fails on every updated PC; it is also not evidence that it will work on yours. The available information does not establish a dependable third-party utility for the latest patched Windows 11 24H2, either.

  • Risk: A mistaken registry edit can cause system instability, application errors, or prevent Windows from starting. Microsoft advises backing up the registry and changing settings only if you understand the potential impact.
  • Possible result: The overlay might not change, or the shortcut indicator could become blank or otherwise confusing. The behavior can depend on the Windows build and updates.
  • Best fit: Consider the workaround only if you are comfortable editing the registry, have a backup, and accept that it may not work. Otherwise, leave the arrow in place.

Back up the registry before making any change

Microsoft’s documented general backup procedure is to export the key or subkey you plan to preserve. This is a safety measure, not an endorsement of the arrow-removal tweak. Follow Microsoft’s registry backup and restore instructions.

How to undo a registry change

If you exported a backup and need to restore it, open Registry Editor and choose File > Import, then select the saved export. This restores the saved registry data; it does not guarantee that every other change made since the export will be preserved. If you are unsure which data to restore, do not experiment with additional registry edits.

Windows 10 support status

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. This does not change how shortcut arrows work, but it matters when deciding whether to keep using a Windows 10 PC: Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
