Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Windows Backup saves supported Windows settings and app-related information for setup on another PC; OneDrive folder backup syncs selected folders and their files to the cloud. They can be used together, but neither is a full copy of your PC.
What each feature backs up
| Question | Windows Backup | OneDrive folder backup |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Save supported Windows settings and app-related information for restoration during setup on another PC. | Sync selected user folders and their files to OneDrive for cloud and cross-device access. |
| Typical contents | App list, accessibility, personalization, language preferences, accounts, and Wi-Fi information. The exact supported catalog can vary. Microsoft’s Windows Backup Settings Catalog lists the categories. | The Windows Backup flow offers Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music. Other folder options may depend on OneDrive settings and account context. See Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-backup instructions. |
| What it does not do | It does not create a full disk image or copy every installed program and file. | It does not restore Windows settings or reproduce the entire PC. |
In short, use Windows Backup for supported setup preferences and OneDrive for the files in folders you choose. Microsoft’s Windows Backup overview and OneDrive sync guide describe these distinct roles.

How OneDrive sync differs from an independent backup
OneDrive keeps the selected folder contents synchronized: adding, changing, or deleting a file in the OneDrive folder is reflected on the OneDrive website and vice versa. That makes files available across devices, but ordinary sync should not be treated as a separate offline archive or a complete recovery copy of Windows.
Cloud access and offline access are separate
With Files On-Demand, files can be online-only, locally available, or marked to remain available on the device. Online-only files take less local disk space but need an internet connection to open. Locally available or always-available files can be accessed offline, subject to their download state and device storage. Microsoft explains the sync and availability options in its OneDrive sync documentation and OneDrive settings guide.

Accounts, storage, and setup
For the consumer Windows Backup app, Microsoft requires a personal Microsoft account; work or school accounts do not work with that app. OneDrive sync setup supports personal and work or school accounts, although an organization’s policies may limit available settings. Do not assume that an account restriction for Windows Backup applies to every OneDrive configuration.
To configure the consumer options, open Windows Backup or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Choose the folders and settings you want to include. Microsoft says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage, with additional storage available for purchase. Folder contents and supported personalization backup need available cloud storage; Microsoft notes that personalization preferences require OneDrive sign-in and sufficient space. See the Windows Backup instructions for the current flow.

What happens when you set up another PC
Windows Backup can offer to restore supported settings and app-related information during setup of a new PC, or after reinstalling Windows, when you sign in with the same Microsoft account. If there is more than one PC backup, Windows lets you choose one. Store apps may be restored by selecting their pins; an app installed outside Microsoft Store may instead point you to a web download. Files in OneDrive are accessed by signing in to OneDrive with the same account. These are separate parts of the recovery process, not one complete system restore.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not confuse restore with PC-to-PC transfer
Microsoft documents a separate transfer process for moving to a new PC. Its listed exclusions include OneDrive files, installed applications, saved passwords, sign-in credentials, system and OS files, and BitLocker-encrypted drives. Those exclusions apply to that transfer feature, not automatically to Windows Backup’s setup restore. Compare the workflows in Microsoft’s PC transfer guide.

Which should you use?
- To carry preferences and supported app information to a replacement PC: enable Windows Backup and sign in with the same personal Microsoft account during setup.
- To reach selected personal files on other devices: enable OneDrive folder backup for the folders you need, and make files locally available if offline access matters.
- For broader preparedness: use both for their respective purposes, and keep a separate copy of important files if you need protection independent of ongoing sync.
The cited Microsoft instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but labels and options can differ by release and account context. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. See the Windows Backup page for Microsoft’s current applicability notes.
