Use the Services console for a graphical way to start or stop a Windows service, or use PowerShell or sc.exe from an elevated terminal when needed. Stopping a service changes its current state; disabling it changes whether Windows can start it automatically. A disabled service cannot be started until its startup type is changed.
Before changing a Windows service
A service is a background component used by Windows or an application. Before stopping or disabling one, check what it does and whether other services depend on it. Record its current startup setting, then make one change at a time so you can reverse a change if it causes a problem.

- Use the service name when entering a command. It may differ from the display name shown in the Services console.
- Windows may require administrator privileges for service control. If an operation is denied, open the relevant tool with elevated permissions.
- A stopped service may be started again; a disabled service must first have its startup type changed to a startable setting.
Microsoft documents service control and startup-type changes in its Set-Service reference and sc.exe reference.

Start, stop, or disable a service in the Services console
- Open Start, type
Services, and open the Services app. You can also pressWin+R, enterservices.msc, and select OK. - Find the service in the list. Check its displayed name and description; open its properties if you need to confirm its service name or startup type.
- To change its current state, right-click the service and choose Start or Stop, as applicable. A service that is already stopped cannot be stopped again.
- To change how Windows starts it, open the service’s properties and choose a value in Startup type. Select Disabled to prevent it from starting until you change that setting again, then select Apply.
The available controls depend on the service and your permissions. If Windows reports that the operation is not supported or that another service depends on it, do not force the change; investigate the dependency or leave the service unchanged.

Control services with PowerShell
Open PowerShell as an administrator if the command requires elevated permissions. First identify the correct service; Get-Service lists services, and the value to use with -Name is the service name rather than necessarily the friendly display name.
Get-Service
Start-Service -Name "ServiceName"
Stop-Service -Name "ServiceName"
Set-Service -Name "ServiceName" -StartupType Disabled
Replace ServiceName with the verified name on your PC. The first two commands start and stop a service; the final command changes its startup type to Disabled. For example, stopping a service does not by itself disable it from starting later.

Set-Service can also change a service’s status and startup type. See Microsoft’s Set-Service documentation for supported parameters and behavior. A stop can fail when dependent services are running, so inspect dependencies rather than assuming a failure means the service name is wrong.

Use sc.exe from Command Prompt or PowerShell
sc.exe provides command-line service-control operations such as start and stop. Open an elevated Command Prompt or terminal when required, and use the verified service name:

Not every service-like entry is listed in services.msc. Microsoft notes that per-user service templates are not displayed in that console. Managing those may require policy or scripts rather than the ordinary graphical workflow. Avoid editing the registry directly unless there is no suitable alternative; Microsoft cautions against using registry edits as the default management method.

When to use each method
- Services console: Best when you want to inspect a service’s description and change its state or startup type through a graphical interface.
- PowerShell: Useful for repeatable commands and scripts. Microsoft also documents remote management through
Invoke-Command; remote execution requires suitable access and configuration. sc.exe: Useful for direct command-line start and stop operations, and for service configuration when you follow the exact documented syntax.
These built-in Windows tools cover ordinary local service management. For a service that is not visible in the console, a service with dependents, or a command that returns an error, check the specific service’s requirements before trying another method.
