For most people using a supported Windows 11 PC at home, Windows Security with Microsoft Defender is a sensible default for core antivirus protection. Independent tests in 2026 show strong results for Defender, while also showing that some third-party products scored slightly higher in particular tests. A paid suite is worth considering when you can name an extra service or management feature you actually need—not simply because Windows includes its own antivirus.
What Windows Security and Microsoft Defender actually are
Windows Security is the built-in Windows interface for viewing and managing security settings. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus component it exposes. Microsoft describes Defender as using real-time, behavior-based and heuristic protection. Other protections, including Microsoft Edge SmartScreen and Windows 11 Network protection, are separate components; Network protection can extend protection to third-party browsers and processes. Features can differ by Windows version and configuration. Microsoft’s Defender documentation explains the distinction and the product’s behavior.

Microsoft says Defender Antivirus is included in Windows 11 and in Windows 10 devices enrolled in Extended Security Updates after end of support. When another antivirus application is installed and enabled, Defender Antivirus automatically turns off. After installing a third-party product, check Windows Security to confirm which security provider is active.

Recent lab results are useful evidence, but they are snapshots of particular product versions, test designs and periods. They do not guarantee how a product will perform on an individual PC or against every future threat.

AV-TEST: protection, performance and usability
In AV-TEST’s July–August 2026 Windows 11 home-user test, 15 products were evaluated using default settings and current publicly available versions. Microsoft Defender Antivirus Consumer 4.18 scored 6/6 for protection, 5.5/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability. Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 and Norton 360 26.6/26.7 each scored 6/6 in all three categories. AV-TEST’s maximum is 6 points per category. See AV-TEST’s Windows home-user results.
AV-Comparatives: real-world protection
In AV-Comparatives’ February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, Microsoft Defender blocked 396 of 400 cases, a 99.0% protection rate. Bitdefender blocked 398 cases (99.5%), and Kaspersky blocked 399 (99.8%). These figures describe that test’s sample and period, not a guarantee of future or individual performance. Why performance rankings need context
AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 Consumer Performance Test used a low-end Windows 11 64-bit machine with an Intel Core i3 processor, 8 GB of RAM and SSD storage. It covered file copying, archiving and unarchiving, installing and uninstalling apps, launching apps, downloading, browsing and a benchmark suite. The report says its results apply to the listed product versions and 64-bit systems. A result from that setup cannot establish which antivirus will feel lightest on every computer. The labs answer different questions: AV-TEST reports protection, performance and usability scores, while the cited AV-Comparatives real-world test reports protection across a defined case set. Their results are complementary snapshots, not a single combined ranking.

Who should use Windows Security?
Windows Security is a reasonable starting point if you use a supported Windows PC at home, keep Windows and its security intelligence updated, want core antivirus protection and do not need a particular third-party bundle. The test results above support that choice without implying that antivirus replaces careful day-to-day habits.
- Install Windows and security-intelligence updates rather than leaving protection out of date.
- Be cautious with downloads and unexpected attachments or links.
- Keep backups and use safe account practices; antivirus is only one part of protecting a PC and its data.
When a third-party antivirus suite makes sense
Consider another suite when you can identify a specific extra benefit, such as a service bundled with the antivirus or management across multiple devices. Package contents and supported devices vary by vendor and edition, so check the current product details before choosing. The test results establish which products and versions were evaluated; they do not establish the current contents, price or suitability of every package.

Compare options on the points that affect your decision:
- Protection: Look for recent independent results and note the test period, product version and test design.
- Performance: Prefer evidence from a device class and workload similar to yours. A low-end test is not a universal measure.
- Usability: Check reported usability results and consider how false positives or disruptive alerts could affect your work.
- Useful extras and coverage: Identify the features you will actually use, how many devices are supported and which edition includes them.
- Cost and renewals: Verify current pricing, renewal terms and edition limits before buying; these can change.
Do you need antivirus software if you use Windows Security or Microsoft Defender?
If you mean a separate, third-party antivirus subscription, not necessarily: Defender is included in Windows 11, and the cited tests show strong results for it. A third-party product may still be a better fit if you need one of its specific extra services or management features. Keep the distinction clear: having Defender does not remove the need for updates, cautious downloads, backups and sound account security.
