On Copilot+ PCs, semantic indexing can help Search find files by meaning, but it still returns search results rather than a conversational answer. If you want to ask questions or follow up, use Copilot.
First, what does “Windows Search AI chat” mean?
Microsoft documents no single feature by that name. It usually conflates two distinct things: Windows Search with semantic indexing, and the Copilot app. A third feature, PC Insights, adds permission-based questions about a PC’s current state inside Copilot.

- Windows Search: The search box in Start or on the taskbar finds apps, files, settings, and other results. File Explorer also has search for files and folders.
- Semantic indexing: On Copilot+ PCs, this supplements conventional indexing so a search can surface conceptually related files. It is enhanced search, not chat.
- Copilot: A separate conversational app that can answer follow-up questions and offer features such as file search, screenshot questions, and Windows Settings guidance.
- PC Insights: An opt-in, experimental Copilot feature that can answer questions using selected information about your device after you grant permission.
Which should you use for the task?
| What you want to do | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open an app, find a setting, or browse files and search categories | Windows Search | It is built into Start and the taskbar and returns apps, settings, files, and other results. File Explorer can search the current folder and its child folders. |
| Find a file from a description instead of its exact name | Windows Search on a Copilot+ PC | Semantic indexing can include related results for supported formats and languages; it does not generate a general chat answer. |
| Ask a question, request an explanation, or discuss something on screen | Copilot | The app supports conversation, screenshot questions, Copilot Vision, and other Windows-related features. |
| Ask about PC state, such as storage or CPU usage | Copilot PC Insights, if available | It can explain selected device information after permission, but does not change settings or fix problems. |
| Get an answer grounded in current web sources | Copilot with web search available | Web search depends on account, license, and organizational settings; Copilot can show the query and sources it used. |
This is a guide to which documented capability fits each task, not a speed or accuracy ranking. Microsoft’s cited documentation does not provide a head-to-head benchmark.
What can Windows Search do that Copilot can’t?
Windows Search is the direct route for finding and opening things in Windows. From Start or the taskbar, it can surface apps, files, settings, and categories such as documents, folders, photos, and web results. In File Explorer, search starts in the current folder and its child folders, and filters such as date modified, kind, and size can narrow results. See Microsoft’s guide to finding items with Microsoft Search.

On a Copilot+ PC, semantic indexing can also help when you remember a file’s subject but not its name. Microsoft gives the example that a search for “pasta” may return items related to lasagna. Search still presents results for you to open; it is not documented as answering questions in a conversational exchange.
Where semantic search works—and where it may not
Microsoft lists these supported document formats: .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls, and .xlsx. Listed image formats are .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp, and .ico.

Improved search is optimized for English (US, Canada, Australia, and UK), French (France and Canada), German, Spanish (Spain and Mexico), Japanese, and Simplified Chinese. Other language combinations may use traditional lexical search instead, so results can depend on the language of the query and content. Microsoft describes the feature in its Windows search indexing documentation.
Indexing settings and privacy
Semantic indexing is enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs. You can disable indexing and searching for selected locations or file types in Windows Settings; Microsoft recommends plugging in the device during initial indexing. The index is stored locally on the PC—or in local Cloud PC storage for AI-enabled Windows 365 devices—and Microsoft says it is not stored by Microsoft or used to train AI models. Microsoft also cautions that installed apps may be able to read index data.

What does Copilot add?
Copilot is for interaction, not just retrieval. Its documented Windows features include searching for supported files, asking about a screenshot, using Copilot Vision, viewing web content in a side pane, and getting guidance to Windows Settings. File search can access supported document formats, and you can adjust its access in the app settings. When you select a link, Copilot opens it beside the conversation rather than in a separate browser window. Details are in Microsoft’s Copilot on Windows guide.
You can open Copilot with a Copilot key or Windows key + C, though the shortcut’s behavior is configurable. New Windows 11 PCs may include the app by default; other users can install it from the Microsoft Store.

Can I ask Copilot questions about my PC?
Yes, if PC Insights is available on your device. Microsoft gives examples including “What graphics card do I have?”, “Do I have enough space for a 100GB game?”, and “What’s my current CPU usage?” PC Insights retrieves relevant device information after you give permission and uses it to explain the answer. It is an opt-in experimental feature that is gradually rolling out, so availability can vary.

When prompted, you can allow access for one session, always allow similar requests, or decline. Permissions can later be changed or revoked. PC Insights does not change settings, automatically troubleshoot, or monitor the PC in the background, and Microsoft says it does not access organizational Microsoft 365 email, Teams chats, calendars, or organizational documents. See Microsoft’s PC Insights explanation and permission details.
Microsoft says personal files and system information accessed by PC Insights are not stored or used to train models. Conversation activity may be used to improve the experience, including training, depending on your settings.
When does Copilot use the web?
Copilot’s web search is conditional: access can depend on account type, subscription or license, and organization controls. If web search is available, a Sources button lets you inspect the exact Bing query and sources used. That makes it possible to see whether an answer draws on the web rather than only the conversation or PC-related context. Microsoft explains this in its documentation on web search in Copilot Chat and agents.
Quick Recap
How to choose in practice
- Use Windows Search when you want to locate or launch something in Windows.
- Use semantic Windows Search on a Copilot+ PC when you want to search supported files by topic or description rather than exact wording.
- Use Copilot when you want a conversational explanation, a follow-up, screen-related help, or guidance on where to find a Windows setting.
- Use PC Insights for a question about device state only if the feature is available and you are comfortable granting its requested access.
