Do not start with display-driver fixes: Microsoft’s blank-screen guidance addresses a whole-display problem, not a diagnosed Search-only fault. Check the scope before choosing a remedy.
First, check whether only Search is black
Open File Explorer and look at the desktop, taskbar, and another window. If those render normally and only the Search flyout is black, close it and reopen it. If that does not help, restart Windows.

This is a cautious first check, not a Microsoft-confirmed cure for a black Search panel. Microsoft documents taskbar Search and File Explorer as separate ways to find files and apps. Its blank-screen guidance covers broader display problems and does not identify a black Search panel as a distinct diagnosed fault. Choose the fix that matches what is black
| What you see | Try | Scope and disruption |
|---|---|---|
| Only the Search panel is black | Close and reopen Search; restart Windows if necessary. | Initial, low-impact triage. Microsoft does not confirm this as a Search-only fix. |
| Search opens, but results are missing | Run Search and Indexing troubleshooting. | Targets indexing or results, not black rendering. |
| The taskbar or wider Windows shell is also stuck | Restart Windows Explorer in Task Manager. | Relevant to a broader shell problem; not established for an isolated Search panel. |
| The entire display is blank | Try the graphics reset and display-mode steps; check external monitor power and cables. | Display troubleshooting, not a Search flyout remedy. |
Restart Windows Explorer if the taskbar or shell is stuck
Use this when the problem extends beyond Search and the taskbar or Windows shell appears unresponsive. Microsoft includes restarting Windows Explorer among its steps for a blank screen with a cursor; that guidance does not establish it as a fix for a Search-only panel.

- Choose Restart. The taskbar and desktop may disappear briefly while Explorer reloads.
Microsoft’s blank-screen steps
Run Search and Indexing troubleshooting for missing results
If Search opens but cannot find files or results seem incomplete, use the Search and Indexing troubleshooter. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Search > Advanced indexing options > Advanced > Troubleshoot search and indexing, then follow the wizard.
Indexing catalogs words and metadata from files so Windows can find content more easily. Microsoft says an initial indexing run can take up to a couple of hours; that estimate concerns indexing completion, not a black Search panel. Rebuilding or troubleshooting the index is therefore relevant to missing results, not evidence-based treatment for black rendering. Use display steps only if the entire screen is blank
If the desktop itself is blank—not just Search—Microsoft’s display troubleshooting steps may apply. Try the graphics reset and display-mode sequence, then check an external monitor connection if one is in use.
- Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. A beep or screen flicker may indicate that the reset occurred.
- Press Windows+P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle display modes.
- If you use an external display, check that the monitor is powered on and its cables are connected securely.
These steps are for a whole-display blank screen. They are not a reason to change graphics settings when only the Search panel is black. Microsoft: Troubleshooting blank screens in Windows

Escalate only when broader symptoms justify recovery
More disruptive recovery steps make sense only if the problem affects Windows beyond Search or fits a specific cause, such as a display problem after a graphics update. Back up important files before higher-impact recovery actions.
- After a graphics update and with a full-screen problem: Microsoft suggests using Safe Mode to update or roll back the display driver.
- When broader Windows behavior suggests corrupted system files: Microsoft’s repair sequence runs DISM before System File Checker (SFC). In an elevated Command Prompt, run
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, let it finish, then runsfc /scannow. These commands address system-file corruption; they are not a guaranteed remedy for an isolated Search panel. - If the issue began after a Windows update: uninstalling that update may help. System Restore can roll back system files and settings. Both are recovery actions, not routine Search-panel fixes.
