A Windows low-space warning tells you that capacity is running short; it does not identify the files responsible. Start with Windows Storage settings for a category-level view, then use a free disk-usage analyzer to inspect large folders and files. Treat the scan as a way to find candidates—not as permission to delete them.
What a disk-usage analyzer adds to Windows’ warning
Windows Storage settings can show how space is divided among categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system-reserved storage. A disk analyzer can help take the next step by showing which folders or files account for space within a drive. That detail is useful when the built-in category view leaves you asking, “What is taking up space on my hard drive?” or “How do I find the biggest files on my PC?”

WinDirStat’s official project page describes three complementary views: a directory list ranked by size, a file-type summary, and an interactive treemap. The list helps you locate large folders, while the treemap gives a visual representation of the space occupied by files. The project materials describe WinDirStat as free and open source; its repository is at GitHub.

Start with Windows Storage settings
Before interpreting a scan, use Windows’ own storage overview to see which broad categories need attention. Microsoft’s Storage settings guide covers the built-in view and Cleanup recommendations, which can suggest temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps for review.

How to inspect a scan without deleting the wrong thing
- Scan the drive that is low on space. Follow the selected analyzer’s current instructions and confirm you are viewing the intended drive, often C: for Windows. Some tools may require elevated access to show certain locations; follow the tool’s own guidance rather than assuming a scan is complete.
- Sort or inspect by size. Use the directory list, file view, or treemap to find unusually large folders and files. A large block in a treemap indicates a large file, not necessarily an unnecessary one.
- Identify the item before acting. Check its name, location, and purpose. Personal videos or old installers may be candidates to move or remove; Windows, application, and system folders may contain files required for normal operation. Size alone cannot tell you whether a file is safe to delete.
- Choose a safe next step. Keep files you need, move personal files to storage you trust if appropriate, or remove items through the relevant app or Windows cleanup controls. For suggested cleanup items, review Microsoft’s free-up-space guidance before proceeding.
Be especially cautious with a previous Windows installation. Microsoft notes that removing it can eliminate the option to roll back to the prior version. Do not remove it unless you are comfortable giving up that recovery path.
Use Storage Sense for routine cleanup
After you have reviewed what is taking space, Windows Storage Sense can handle some recurring cleanup. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide explains that it can remove temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its settings. It works on the system drive; other drives have separate storage settings. Downloads and cloud content are not cleaned unless configured.

Check the Storage Sense settings before enabling or changing cleanup behavior, especially if you keep files in Downloads or rely on locally available cloud-synced content. Automatic cleanup should match your own retention preferences.

Leave room for Windows updates, but avoid a universal target
Microsoft’s Windows update space guidance gives typical estimates of 6–11 GB or more for feature updates and 2–3 GB or more for quality updates. These are not universal free-space requirements: actual needs vary with the update path, optional features, and device configuration. Microsoft also notes that external storage can help in some update scenarios.
