Start by recording the full error message or code and identifying where the failure happens: while enabling the Windows feature, launching Sandbox, opening a .wsb configuration file, or updating the newer Sandbox app. These failure paths have different documented remedies, so match the error before changing settings.
First, identify where Windows Sandbox fails
Use this quick check to choose the relevant fix:
- Feature setup: You cannot enable Windows Sandbox, or see
REGDB_E_IIDNOTREG. - Default launch: Sandbox reports that no hypervisor was found.
- Configuration launch: Opening a
.wsbfile produces an error. - App update: The older Sandbox app cannot download or install the newer app.
Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox troubleshooting guide maps specific messages to different causes; there is no single fix that applies to every launch failure.
Fix the error that matches your case
REGDB_E_IIDNOTREG: check that the feature is enabled
Open Turn Windows features on or off from Windows Search and verify that Windows Sandbox is selected. If Windows asks you to restart after changing the feature, save your work and restart before trying to launch Sandbox again. Also verify that your Windows edition supports Sandbox; Microsoft lists the supported editions on its Windows Sandbox overview.
“No hypervisor was found”: check Hyper-V support
For the message “No hypervisor was found. Please enable hypervisor support,” Microsoft directs users to ensure Hyper-V is enabled. Microsoft Learn states that “Windows Sandbox only supports Hyper-V Hypervisor”; third-party hypervisors are not supported.

If your Windows installation is itself running inside a virtual machine, the general troubleshooting guidance does not establish the steps for enabling nested virtualization on every platform. Ask the VM administrator or consult the documentation for that virtualization platform rather than applying generic commands.
E_INVALIDARG: inspect the .wsb file
This error indicates that the supplied .wsb configuration is invalid or contains errors. A .wsb file is an XML configuration file, so check its XML syntax and the settings you specified. Microsoft’s configuration guide describes the available settings.

ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND: verify the configuration path
Check that the .wsb file exists and that the path you opened is correct. A missing or incorrect file path is a different problem from invalid XML.
“The following settings are enforced by your IT administrator”: contact IT
This message means the .wsb file is attempting to use a setting controlled by Group Policy. On a managed device, contact your IT administrator; do not try to bypass the organization’s policy.

0x80070005 Access is Denied: check the mapped host folder
Microsoft documents this error for a specific case involving restrictions on the Sandbox WDAGUtilityAccount: mapping a host folder directly to the Sandbox Desktop. For that setup, map the host folder to a new subfolder of the Desktop instead. This documented cause does not explain every access-denied message.
If the newer Sandbox app will not update on Windows 11 24H2
Starting with Windows 11 version 24H2, the older Windows Sandbox app attempts to download the newer app from Microsoft Store. This update issue is distinct from a failure to launch the underlying feature. Microsoft says the device needs access to the internet, Windows Update, and Microsoft Store. For upgrade connectivity errors such as WININET_E_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED or WU_E_PT_ENDPOINT_UNREACHABLE, check the internet connection and whether those services are reachable.

If the first upgrade attempt fails, it may continue in the background. You can also check Microsoft Store under Updates & downloads. Microsoft documents the 24H2 transition and update behavior in its Windows Sandbox versions page and Windows Sandbox FAQ.
When these fixes do not match the message
Keep the exact text or code and the failure stage together when asking for help. A feature-state error, missing hypervisor, invalid configuration, policy restriction, mapped-folder permission issue, and Store connectivity problem point to different components; changing unrelated settings can make diagnosis harder.
