What the error means
Windows Resource Protection is the Windows mechanism that safeguards important system files and registry components. System File Checker is the command-line tool started by sfc /scannow. This message says that SFC could not complete the requested operation; it does not identify a single cause or confirm that protected files are damaged.

Possible factors include an unfinished update or servicing operation, a problem in the component store, missing WinSxS temporary folders, interference from startup software or a filter driver, file-system errors, or broader Windows corruption. Microsoft’s guidance for this exact message recommends trying SFC in Safe Mode and checking that the required WinSxS folders exist. Microsoft’s SFC repair guidance does not establish one cause for every occurrence.
Start with the safe repair sequence
If Windows is unstable, back up important files before attempting repairs. Use an administrator Command Prompt, restart once if an update or installation recently completed, and do not interrupt DISM or SFC while either is running. If the drive is producing I/O errors or signs of physical failure, prioritize backing up or imaging it rather than repeating repair commands.

1. Repair the component store with DISM
In Windows, open Command Prompt as an administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWait for the operation to finish. A successful run reports a message such as “The restore operation completed successfully.” DISM normally gets repair files through Windows Update. Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC because SFC may rely on the component store. Microsoft’s SFC overview documents this sequence.
If DISM says it cannot find source files, use a compatible Windows repair source rather than downloading individual system files from an unofficial site. The following is Microsoft’s example pattern, not a path to copy literally unless that folder exists and contains files matching the installed Windows version:

2. Restart, then run SFC
After DISM completes, restart Windows and open an administrator Command Prompt. Run:

sfc /scannowKeep the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Microsoft describes the possible results as follows:

Retry SFC in Safe Mode
Microsoft specifically recommends running SFC in Safe Mode after this error. Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services, which can help distinguish a Windows servicing issue from interference by software that starts with a normal Windows session. If SFC works there, Safe Mode is a diagnostic clue: investigate recently added startup software, services, security products, or filter drivers rather than treating Safe Mode itself as the permanent fix.
- Open Settings. In Windows 11, go to System > Recovery. In Windows 10, go to Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. You can also hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart.
- In the recovery menus, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Choose 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Choose 6 or F6 for Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
- Open an administrator Command Prompt if needed, then run
sfc /scannow.

Check the WinSxS temporary folders
Microsoft says to verify that both of these folders exist under the Windows directory:

On a typical installation where Windows is in C:Windows, the corresponding paths are C:WindowsWinSxSTempPendingDeletes and C:WindowsWinSxSTempPendingRenames. Check the temporary directory from an administrator Command Prompt:

dir "%WinDir%WinSxSTemp"If one of the two folders is missing, create only the missing folder. These commands create both if necessary; an existing directory is not replaced:
mkdir "%WinDir%WinSxSTempPendingDeletes"
mkdir "%WinDir%WinSxSTempPendingRenames"Do not delete WinSxS contents or change permissions broadly. The documented check is that the two temporary folders exist, not that the component store should be manually altered. See Microsoft’s instructions for this SFC error.
Use CBS.log to see what SFC attempted
SFC writes detailed entries to %WinDir%LogsCBSCBS.log. Microsoft documents extracting SFC-related entries to a desktop text file with this command:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%DesktopSFCDetails.txt"Open SFCDetails.txt and look for repeated entries about a file or component, including “Cannot repair member file,” “Repairing corrupted file,” or “Cannot verify.” The log can show what SFC tried, but it is not a safe instruction to replace a named system file manually: replacement requires a known-good file and the correct servicing context. Check the file system if the failure continues
To scan the Windows volume without scheduling an offline repair, run:
chkdsk /scanIf Windows reports file-system errors or the problem persists, run a repair on the Windows volume, substituting its actual letter if it is not C::
chkdsk C: /fWindows may ask to schedule the repair for the next restart. Microsoft includes chkdsk /f C: in its Windows troubleshooting guidance. CHKDSK addresses file-system errors; it does not repair physically failing storage. If the drive disappears, makes unusual noises, reports SMART warnings, or produces repeated I/O errors, stop repeated repair attempts and protect the data first.
If Windows will not boot, repair the offline installation
Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) or Windows installation media and choose Repair my PC to open recovery tools. From WinRE Command Prompt, identify the Windows partition before running offline commands: drive letters can differ from those used during normal Windows startup.
- Run
diskpart, thenlist vol, thenexitto inspect the volumes. - Check likely letters for a Windows directory, for example
dir C:Windows,dir D:Windows, ordir E:Windows. - Once you have identified the Windows directory and boot volume, run SFC with those actual letters. For example, if Windows is on
D:and the boot volume isC::
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C: /offwindir=D:WindowsThe letters in that example are illustrative; use the volumes on the affected machine. Microsoft’s Windows boot troubleshooting guidance covers recovery and offline system-file checks. If BitLocker is enabled, some recovery operations may require its recovery key; have it available before proceeding.

Offline DISM and repair media
A common offline DISM pattern targets the Windows image directory directly:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthIf DISM needs installation media as its repair source, the source type, edition, language, architecture, build, drive letter, and image index must match the installed Windows image. For example, a WIM source may use this form:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:E:sourcesinstall.wim:1 /LimitAccessAn ESD source uses a different prefix:
DISM /Image:D: /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:E:sourcesinstall.esd:1 /LimitAccessNeither D:, E:, nor image index :1 is universal. To inspect indexes in a WIM, for example, run:

Microsoft’s repair-source guidance explains source requirements. If DISM reports that source files cannot be found, check whether Windows Update can provide them, whether the source path and WIM/ESD type are correct, and whether the source matches the installation. Error 87 commonly points to invalid syntax or a mistyped switch; re-enter the command with its spaces intact. If DISM reports I/O errors, investigate storage rather than trying increasingly broad repair commands.
Choose a recovery option if repairs do not work
Escalate according to when the problem began, whether Windows still starts, and how much change or data loss you can accept. Back up personal data and secure the BitLocker recovery key before reset or reinstall operations.

Microsoft details the choices in its Windows recovery options, Reset this PC guide, and installation-media reinstall guide. A correct in-place reinstall is different from booting from USB and performing a clean installation; back up data even when choosing a keep-files option.
When to stop and get help
- The drive reports SMART warnings, repeated I/O errors, or other signs of hardware failure.
- Windows will not boot and important files are not backed up.
- You cannot obtain a BitLocker recovery key when recovery tools request it.
- DISM, SFC, and file-system checks fail repeatedly, or the PC is used for business-critical work.
For Windows 10 users, repair commands may still run, but Microsoft support ended on October 14, 2025. Standard free Windows Update security fixes and technical support are no longer provided after that date. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery and support information.
