A Windows password reset disk can restore access to a forgotten local account—but only if you created it before getting locked out. Microsoft’s built-in method uses an ordinary USB flash drive, not a special $15 Microsoft product. Buying a drive after forgetting your password won’t make it a ready-to-use reset disk.
Does a Windows password reset disk work?
Yes, for the local Windows account it was prepared for. Microsoft documents the feature for Windows 10 and Windows 11: while signed in to a local account, you use Windows’ Control Panel wizard to create a reset disk on a USB flash drive. If you later forget that account’s password, you can use the prepared disk at the sign-in screen.

It is not a universal unlock key. Microsoft says the reset-disk option is unavailable for Microsoft accounts. If you sign in with a Microsoft account, use Microsoft’s account recovery and sign-in help instead.

Is the $15 disk worth buying?
Microsoft’s documented process calls for a USB flash drive and Windows’ built-in wizard; it does not require a proprietary reset disk or specify a $15 price. If you already have a suitable USB drive, you can use it to create the disk without buying a dedicated product. If you need a drive, ordinary USB media can help you prepare for a future local-account lockout.

- Step 1: Boot from the USB Flash Drive - Insert the USB flash drive into an available USB port on your computer. - Turn on your computer or restart it if it’s already on. - As the computer starts, press the key that opens the boot menu. This key varies by manufacturer and model, but it’s often F2, F10, Esc, or Delete. - In the BIOS/UEFI setup menu, locate the Boot Options or Boot Order section. - Use the arrow keys to select your USB drive and move it to the top of the boot priority list. - Save your changes and exit the BIOS/UEFI setup. Your computer will now boot from the USB flash drive.
- After that its will take few minutes to reset Windows login password
- Package includes instruction how to use "Password reset USB" software
That preparation must happen while you can still sign in to the local account. Buying a drive or a product advertised as a password reset disk after you are locked out does not turn it into the disk you should have created beforehand. Microsoft’s instructions establish the built-in method; they do not verify the claims, safety, compatibility, or current price of any particular third-party product.
How to create the disk before you need it
- Sign in to the local account for which you want a recovery option.
- Plug in a USB flash drive.
- Open Control Panel, search for create password reset, and select Create a password reset disk.
- Follow the wizard, then remove the drive and keep it somewhere safe.
Microsoft says you do not need to create a new disk just because you change the account password. See Microsoft’s instructions for creating a password reset disk for a local account.

What to do if you have already forgotten the password
Choose the recovery route that fits your account and what you set up before losing access. Microsoft documents these options for a local account:
| Situation | Documented recovery path | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| You created a reset disk in advance | At sign-in, choose the password entry option, then OK > Reset password; select Use a password reset disk and follow the on-screen instructions. | The disk must already have been created for the local account. |
| You set up security questions | At sign-in, choose the password entry option, then OK > Reset password, and answer the configured security questions. | This works only if security questions were set up for the account. |
| Another administrator account is available on the PC | Sign in to that account. Open Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > Users, select the account, and choose Set Password. | You need access to an existing administrator account. |
| None of those local-account options is available | Microsoft directs users to reset the Windows device. Review Microsoft’s local-account password recovery guidance and its separate Windows reset instructions before proceeding. | The cited password-recovery guidance does not promise that files will be preserved by resetting the device. |
| You sign in with a Microsoft account | Use Microsoft account recovery or sign-in help. | The local-account reset-disk option is not available for Microsoft accounts. |
Microsoft says its support team cannot retrieve or circumvent a forgotten password if the documented recovery options do not work. Use these routes only for an account and device you are authorized to access.
