But the processor label alone cannot tell you whether it will be compatible, last longer on battery, or perform better than an Intel- or AMD-based laptop. Check your exact software and devices first, then compare specific laptop models using the workloads you care about.
What Windows on Arm changes—and what it does not
Windows on Arm is Windows 11 running on a processor built around the Arm architecture. Many applications can run either as native Arm64 software or through Windows’ emulation of x86 and x64 apps. Microsoft says native Arm applications provide the best performance, responsiveness, and battery behavior; emulation expands the range of software that can run, but it does not guarantee identical performance or compatibility.

The practical distinction is between software and its dependencies. An app may run under emulation while a required driver, security component, plug-in, or attached device does not. That is why “Will my app run?” is not always enough: check the whole workflow, including the hardware it needs to access.

Look for native versions of essential apps
Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ lists native Arm64 versions of Microsoft 365 apps including Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and OneNote. It also names Chrome, Slack, Spotify, Zoom, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. These examples do not guarantee support for every app version, plug-in, or specialized workflow, so confirm the specific features you rely on with the software publisher.

Windows 11 can emulate many unmodified x86 and x64 applications. Microsoft says its Prism emulation technology is available on Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon X series processors and is coming to other Windows 11 devices. Availability and behavior can depend on the device and app; check the current support information for the laptop you are considering.
Verify drivers and connected devices separately
Microsoft Support states: “Drivers for hardware, games, and apps only work if they’re designed for a Windows 11 Arm-based PC.” In practice, an app running through emulation does not make a missing Arm64 driver available. Check the laptop maker’s and device maker’s support pages for the exact model and Windows on Arm.
- Printers: Microsoft says most printers are supported, including those using Mopria. For a particular printer, confirm that Windows includes a compatible driver or that its maker provides an Arm64 driver.
- Docks and other peripherals: Check each important connected device, not just the dock’s product family. A component that depends on a separate driver may be a compatibility issue.
- VPN, security, and system tools: Microsoft notes that some third-party security tools require an Arm version. System-customization tools may also have problems.
- Accessibility software: Some apps that provide assistive or accessibility functions may have issues. Verify the exact software and features you need with the vendor.
- Games: Some games that rely on unsupported anti-cheat drivers may not work. Check game-specific support rather than assuming that x86/x64 emulation means the game will launch and function correctly.
Use compatibility catalogs as a first screen
Microsoft points users to Works on Windows on Arm, an open-source third-party compatibility site to which Microsoft contributes data. The Windows Developer Blog reported on August 25, 2026, that the catalog contained more than 7,000 verified apps and games. That is a catalog count, not a guarantee that a particular app, version, game mode, or accessory will work on your laptop. Treat it as a screening tool and confirm critical business or specialist software with its publisher.

A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Write down the exact apps and features you need, including plug-ins, add-ins, and work-specific tools.
- For each one, check whether the vendor offers a native Arm64 version or confirms that the required x86/x64 version works under Windows 11 emulation.
- List devices and services the workflow depends on: printers, docks, scanners, VPNs, security tools, accessibility software, and game anti-cheat systems.
- Check the exact device model’s Arm64 driver support with its manufacturer; do not rely on a generic claim that a product family is compatible.
- For essential work tools, get confirmation from the vendor or your organization’s IT team before purchase.
Battery life: compare the exact laptop and test
There is no universal battery-life winner among Arm, Intel, and AMD laptops established by the available comparisons. Runtime depends on the complete laptop—including display, battery capacity, software, power settings, and workload—as well as whether apps run natively or through emulation. A manufacturer’s “up to” figure and an independent test should not be treated as directly comparable unless they use similar methods.
When comparing published battery results, look for the laptop configuration, screen, brightness and power settings where disclosed, and the kind of test: local video playback, streaming, office work, or mixed use. A result from one workload does not establish runtime in another.
Performance: match the test to your workload
Processor architecture is not a workload result. Performance can differ between native and emulated apps, between single-threaded and multi-threaded work, and between plugged-in and battery operation. A benchmark of one laptop is evidence about that machine under that test—not a guarantee for every laptop using the same processor architecture.

What battery-versus-AC testing shows
In a July 29, 2026, Tom’s Hardware report, selected laptops were tested in Cinebench 2026 single-thread and multi-thread workloads and HandBrake video conversion. The report used Windows balanced profiles where possible and compared each system’s results on battery with its own plugged-in results; it was not a single cross-system ranking of overall performance.
| Tested laptop | Reported result when running on battery | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Asus Zenbook A16 with Snapdragon X2 Elite Extreme | Cinebench 2026 multi-thread result increased 13.06%; HandBrake result decreased 13.33%. | Different workloads moved in different directions on this tested system; the figures are not representative of all Snapdragon laptops. |
| Acer Swift Go 16 AI with AMD Ryzen AI 7 445 | Average benchmark scores were 50.06% lower on battery in the report’s tests. | A result for this laptop and test set, not a general AMD figure. |
| HP OmniBook X Flip 14 with AMD Ryzen AI 9 465 | Average benchmark scores were 5.45% lower on battery in the report’s tests. | A result for this laptop and test set, not a general AMD figure. |
Results across three premium 14-inch laptops
A 2026 Windows Central report summarizing Signal65 testing compared the Lenovo Slim 7x with Snapdragon X2 Elite X2E-88-100, Dell XPS 14 with Intel Core Ultra X7 358H, and Lenovo Yoga 7a 14 with AMD Ryzen AI 7 445. It reported different outcomes across Geekbench 7, Cinebench 2026, UL Procyon Office, AI tests, and battery tests. The battery figures below are results from that report’s named systems and methods, not architecture-wide expectations.
| Tested laptop | Local video playback reported | Sustained Procyon Office battery test reported |
|---|---|---|
| Lenovo Slim 7x, Snapdragon X2 Elite X2E-88-100 | 16.1 hours | 14.3 hours |
| Dell XPS 14, Intel Core Ultra X7 358H | 14.4 hours | 17.4 hours |
| Lenovo Yoga 7a 14, AMD Ryzen AI 7 445 | not stated in the Windows Central report’s cited results | not stated in the Windows Central report’s cited results |
The contrast within the reported results is useful: the Slim 7x had the longer local-video figure, while the Dell led the sustained Office battery test. Neither result alone answers which laptop lasts longer for your own use.

Windows on Arm is a reasonable fit when
- Your must-have apps are available natively for Arm64, or you have confirmed that their emulated versions work for your specific tasks.
- Your essential peripherals and software dependencies have compatible Arm64 drivers or built-in Windows support.
- You can compare the actual laptop’s battery and performance results in workloads similar to yours, rather than relying on an architecture label.
Prioritize a particular Intel- or AMD-based laptop when
- A required app, driver, game anti-cheat system, accessibility tool, security product, or peripheral lacks confirmed Windows on Arm support.
- Your workflow depends on software or devices whose vendors have not confirmed compatibility, and you cannot afford to discover an issue after purchase.
- A specific Intel or AMD model has verified compatibility and better evidence for your workload. The architecture name by itself still does not establish its battery life or speed.
Compare laptops, not just processor families
For each candidate, compare the exact processor variant, memory, storage, screen, and available battery and performance results. Check whether test apps were native or emulated, which workload was measured, and whether results were recorded plugged in or on battery. Differences in the whole laptop and test method can matter as much as the broad distinction between Arm, Intel, and AMD.
